Washes really arent good for slathering all over large flat surfaces as you discovered. Much more effective to paint them into the cracks and crevices manually, cleaning up any slop as you go. The broadsides are looking pretty bitching so far.
Yeeeahh.... I thought you just, washed the model with it. The ADL is the first thing I painted. Newb mistakes left and right. I will be much more careful with my application when I get to the broadsides heh.

I thought the exact same thing when I restarted painting a couple of years ago. I had to strip some models due to that.
I am working on my first army. The process is slow, painful, but also kinda cool and rewarding. The below photos are crap, and the models in them are crap, and still a WIP, but I wanted to share anyway.
For reference. I am colorblind, and I have the creativity of a turnip. So rather than try to come up with something totally original in color scheme, I am stealing blatantly from a cool toy I have which I can adapt and use as reference.
For those of you who forgot from a few pages back, this guy here:
First up is a resin ADL I got from Mr. Dandy, which I found linked in the 40k thread. These are the pieces I used the nulin oil on, which came out terribly. But it's a wall that gets shot at so I suppose in the end, it being ugly as sin doesn't matter much.
Next are my Broadsides which are VERY unfinished, but are coming along much smoother. I will also not be using the oil on those guys, I will probably use the soft tone mentioned a few posts above since I bet the sepia will work better with the beige I have going on.
Anyway, I know they aren't any good, but I figured you guys would get a kick out of watching a newbie enter the hobby and I wanted to share
Thanks for all the help you guys have been so far (and that has been quite a bit) !
Actually, i think those broadsides look very good! It's a nice color scheme, and right now they definitely look like the plastic transformers toys. A little shading and highlighting and they'll be amazing.
I'd go for a gryphonne sepia wash on the bone color, but test it out on some spare parts first to see if you like it, before going to the broadsides.
That paint scheme is Transformers Prime Megatron, isn't it?
So awesome.
Yeah, I just did a generic gray/purple Decepticon scheme. The guy I posted originally had a gun arm as well as his 1 eye, and was going to be a lot more purple though...
What do you guys think of the color scheme so far? I'm just putting down base paints at the moment. Going to be doing the dull gold on all the Templar symbols and Aquillas. Was thinking of also doing the front engine cowling in the cold as well. Maybe do the little slit things along the top edge in red too? Or the cockpit/gunner hoods red?

I got it used, it was already primed red all over. Pissed me off because I hate painted canopies. Also assembled with some sort of bullshit glue so I couldn't disassemble it without risking breaking shit.
So, I'm stuck with having to paint my canopies.

I can't stand used things. It sucks because they're so much cheaper. So I end up getting them anyway. Hopefully, the Simple Green kills all their germs before I have to touch it.
Treat the canopy as armour, and put little copula view slits on it.

I use PVA. I generally dump on way more than the PVA can hold, smush it down a little (that's a technical term), and then let it sit overnight before shaking off.

Not static grass, but those little clumps GW sells with their basing kits. I think there is actually a little plastic tab under them, but I'll have to check. I want to go ahead and get those done tonight if I can. Then tomorrow I can spray and I'll be done!
Of course, then I'll have to basecoat the next set of marines to paint.
I cut the bristles off of old paintbrushes instead of buying fake grass. It feels strangely morbid when I'm doing it. Like all my current brushes can see it and realize that it's going to happen to them someday.
For future reference: this doodad is what you want for fitting a Badger hose to the AS-186.
Huzzah! Happy airbrushing then - glad it worked out well for you.

@Echo what kind of setup are you using for spraying? Do you have an indoor or outdoor box set up, or are you just letting the paint fly in the wind?
I have yet to actually bust out my airbrush, but want to use it to prime some dudes when I get them cleaned up (and after they arrive from the UK), so I'm curious what your setup is.
For my airbrush I just use a cardboard box and it works fine. I do have an air filter that I wear and a bottle for spraying cleaner into because the smell from spraying that loose can stick around for a while.

Echo, how are the fumes around your desk when you do that? I would really like to spray some basecoats at my desk without having to relocate outside, but if it smells, I wouldn't be able to get away with it.
I used to prime right by my desk, then I noticed buildup of the excess spray on my computer fan.
Now I prime in my basement.

I don't think the airbrush would be as bad as a spray primer, but still. Since I do all my work in my bedroom, I don't want paint flying thru the air at night. Anyway...
Okay, I'm really excited. I finally finished some terminators! They're based and everything. I've been wanting terminators since I first started 40K and bought my first 3rd edition boxed set. The first ones I bought were the old static pose terminators, and they just didn't look right so I put them away and never got around to them. These new plastic ones are much nicer. Anyway, here are the pics! Some of the pics are with a flash and they look more golden yellow, which is closer to the actual color. The ones that look like they're tending to green (like a highlighter) are without the flash.

I forgot to take pics of this one. I am pretty proud of myself for the freehand on this. It isn't artistic or anything. I'm just jazzed I didn't make a mess of it!

Likes purple?

Maybe the air intake panels above the top turret in red as well, but then it's enough.

Of course, then I'll have to basecoat the next set of marines to paint.
But anyway yeah I just use regular glue.
Put a few dots of white glue on it.
Put grass on it.
In a few hours, you have grass tufts. Apply them to the base with either superglue or more PVA.

Or just listen to Keenbean's advice, it sounds pretty solid.
