So yeah, unless you've been living in a cave, you've hopefully experienced

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bZkp7q19f0

As a long-term K-Pop fan(ten years and counting), never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd see a Korean artist performing in Rockefeller Plaza; in his native language no less.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dlhhfpFBTk

Gangnam Style is even being played on the radio, in South Florida at that.
(Power 96!)

After all the efforts of Korea to get their music globalized, such as:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0z4MakfRO4

which barely made a blip in the US,

THIS:

tumblr_m7dpr4b0CP1ruirv8o1_500.gif

has made K-Pop hit the big time.

So do you think this is a flash in the pan, or is Korean music really about to hit it big?

Also, PSY's been in the game for 10 years too.

I heard this on the way home from work on the radio in San Diego. It didn't even register that I was listening to it on the Radio as I tend to listen to songs on my playlist anyways so it wasn't until about halfway through that it hit me. This was on a station that previously played nothing but dance and pop and certainly nothing from other countries.

I think it is fascinating how far and how quickly it has spread across the globe and how infectious the song is. You have people who don't even know what K-pop is singing along to words they don't know because they song is just that catchy.

I think it's a wonderful thing and am very heartened to see such a widespread appreciation for a song.

In my opinion? K-Pop tends to be more dance(i.e. techno) and hip-hop oriented. J-Pop tends to be (more) sugary and sometimes rock flavored.

There's a heck of a lot more Korean rappers for sure.

I hear a bunch of kpop waiting for starcraft matches to start (just as a side effect)

this was the first one that actually made me pay attention. I thought it was hilarious but didn't really think twice about the song. it's fun to see that it caught on though, specifically as a video. although it is catchy... when you hear it a bunch. They were playing it at a european starcraft tourney this weekend just because kpop is so ingrained in the scene in general and this song has exploded.

I think the Korean language itself sounds very similar to English in most of their songs where the Japanese language is pretty distinctive. I also hear a LOT of English words in K-pop songs compared to J-pop. I think there is something about the style of K-pop that translates very well to American pop from about 10 years ago.

It's really interesting reading about all the satirical elements in the song. The whole thing is basically a sendup of Korea's fashionable idle rich.

For me it's the elevator part. Everything else in the video is actually similar to western pop videos. But that dude in the elevator. He just looks so happy. Nobody should be that happy!

Music sung in a foreign language is obviously not going to be a lasting trend in the U.S. At least, not at the level of popularity that gangnam style currently holds. You get your assorted Danke Shoen or Macarena every once and a while, but by and large people won't buy music with lyrics that they can't sing along with.

I'm not sure if the vector to the west came through SC2, but I remember it hitting the scene at MLG summer arena. At GSL code S the next weekend it was also played a lot.

I doubt that this will mean k-pop hits it big in the west. I'm no expert, but most of what I have seen of it could just as easily come out of the European and US factories recording studios.

Agreed, there are some k-pop bands who perform their songs in english (with a large Korean American popultion, they speak and sing fluently). Ie, Girls Generation came over and did The Boys in english on ... was it letterman? But the whole feel or K-Pop is nuanced differently from western pop. Psy and Gangnam style are probably the exception to the rule, and like lazegamer mentioned, is probably like those rare foreign language songs that occasionally make it into the western mainstream.

More interesting is that when I went over to China recently, K-Pop was prevailent in all their stores. Its really surprising how popular K-pop is in other non-Korean countries, even though the language barriers still exist.

God this video... yeah I just can't believe how it's gotten so big, so fast. I think I've had at least 10 different people post this on facebook, and most of my facebook friends are not normally the type to post music videos.

I wonder if people actually get that? Like, for all the people who love this video, are they aware that it's basically a satire of all the "look at me I'm so cool and rich" club dancing music videos that K-pop makes by the buttload? It reminds me of The Lonely Island, more than anything. Which, oddly enough, I heard bars playing Lonely Island songs un-ironically when I was in Korea.

I know that's why I love this video

I don't speak korean, don't really listen to k-pop at all, and haven't been to korea

but come on, everything in this video is ridiculous! like the elevator thing, or the part where he is in the sauna throwing up gang signs while leaning on some sweaty guy, or when he is literally yelling at some girl's butt, or when he is in a tux with the camera pulled in close and its intense and then the shot pulls out and he is on the toilet

how could this be anything but satirical?

I got that general impression from just how over the top it was.

But I'm not sure it's a permanent addition as a genre. It's a really catchy song but I know it's the first k-pop song to ever make it on to my radar.

This song is perpetually stuck in my head. People look at me strangely when I mutter "Ohp.... ohp, ohp, ohp..." to myself. I think it's great that a Korean artist has broken into the American market, but people don't really seem to take him seriously. The music video was a big joke, so when he was a guest on Ellen, for example, they treated him like a joke. Hope he comes to get a little more respect in the future.

Heard this on the radio. Was really, really surprised, though I doubt it's the first time I've heard PSY (thanks, Last.fm). He wasn't around when I was in South Korea, sadly.

As for him himself, I don't think he's ever going to get be looked at "seriously" in the U.S. market unfortunately (seeing how he's not from North America or the UK). I don't think he minds, seeing how his sense of humor seems to be a big part of his appeal even before this hit the US, and I think humor artists tend to come of drop in and out quite rapidly and just hang about for the laughs. I guess it's kind of like how when I first heard of MC Hammer (before I came stateside).

Catchy song all the same. Bought it on Zune, don't regret it. Naturally, it's already got a few covers in Korean.

I'm sure no one in the United States gets this (who wasn't a Korean national, an expat, or read this article). It'd be like asking a seagull if they understand the space shuttle by watching it, or my HIST 2112 students why Americans are marching in Red Square, or asking me to look at someone to dismantle a Hemi engine. That being said, you can clearly still enjoy the craziness of this video without any of that context (just like people outside the Anglosphere can enjoy a Lonely Island video, even if this is a tiny, tiny bit more subtle). You might very well think it was an entirely different kind of satire or joke. More likely, they'll come to their own conclusions and be convinced that they're absolutely correct (and have a good laugh), like how all international media is approached.

The article was fascinating. To my annoyance, you cannot find charts rating nations by credit card debt (or my google-fu sucks), but I have to admit, I wondered why South Korea always looked like a much nicer country (from an aesthetic standpoint), despite the fact that where I was born has a much higher GDP per capita. I kind of wonder if credit card debt might have something to do with it...

Also, the guy in the yellow suit that has the dance-off with Psy in the parking garage is the single most popular celebrity in Korea. His name is Yoo JaeSuk and he's probably more well known than the Korean president here.

The best part of that was when they showed half the video and then cut to the audience dancing along. Normally they just show the video. I didn't expect it to become an audience participation event.

Aside from the explosion of various _-pops that became huge on the forums a year or two back (mostly avatars, sigs and some youtube linking) none of it was really on my radar, but this has stuck. It's catchy, I enjoy the beat, and the video is just such a great mix of absurd (culturally different or truly absurd) and fun.
