I just saw the video on the making of Gungam Style, they all look like they're enjoying themselves so much. Video was obviously a blast to make
Living in Korea it's impossible to escape it. It's everywhere.
I'll never get tired of that brilliant video though.
It's made it to Wisconsin, there is no escape
Really not seeing the appeal at all. As far as wacky Asian Culture Tropes go, it's pretty tame.
Probably because it doesn't really fall into trope that in my opinion.
From what I understand this sort of self examining satire on their own culture doesn't really happen much in South Korea. It tends to resonate with western audiences because our music culture is no stranger to it and despite the language barrier we can easily recognize the hallmarks of the style. As someone else mentioned it's likened to a similar style with the Lonely Island stuff. It's silly but at the same time speaks volumes and is set to a very catchy tune along with a very unique dance that is easy to pick up.
It has all the stuff you need to spread like wildfire and has basically done just that. It actually helps that the guy doesn't look like "Baby faced pop star number 134987" and has a pretty unique look to himself as that further distances him from the "Wacky Asian Culture" Trope. It's precisely because it doesn't really fit that that it has gotten so big and resonates so well with the western world as well.

One curious google search later, and I spent most of the weekend watching cute Korean girls dancing to it on youtube.
It, uh, kinda started growing on me after that...
And he does actually write it himself, unlike all the assembly-line k-pop stars.
Apparently, he graduated from Berklee
Anyway, this article was pushed to me along with the video. I don't know if it's been posted here. I gave a quick thread look, but didn't see it, so I apologize if this is retreading old ground.
Anyhow, it kind of explains that this video and song are very much satire and subversive in a culture that kind of doesn't usually respond well to that sort of thing. It's actually considered something of a coup. It's really a pretty interesting read if you're into understanding other cultures and such.

edit: oh fuckin hell. only had to look 7 messages down to see this link in the thread already. i suck. ignore me. ><
"No.. I was wrong. This must be what going mad feels like."
With the exception of the subway car, there was nothing in that video scenery wise that I wouldn't expect to see in the United States. And the horse stable more than makes up for that, though I personally have seen more horses in the United States than everywhere else combined. A statement to Gangnam's affluence, I imagine.
That being said, South Korea looks as different from other countries in East Asia, if not more so. Wacky Asian Culture Tropes go!

I think it actually has more of a groove to it, in a way.
And now suddenly my mother calls me up and asks me if I've seen the namgang man.

I've been wondering about this. Things can be famous simply for being famous in the United States, but it's not guaranteed. Psy's may be better known for other songs elsewhere near Korea.
Poor Link
It's also just good song with a catchy beat.
Meanwhile, someone in my year in both high school and college is the guy in the silly glasses in this.
All the people dancing with the core group in front of the bird's nest are just random people who recognized the dance.
It's No. 2 on the Hot 100.
This... This is actually really good.

Suck it up. I heard it on the 100.1 here in Athens three weeks ago.
This might be revenge for Seal or Ceelo Green or any number of others whom the Koreans have had to contend with.
EDIT: I would like to add, belatedly, that Al Roker singing along to the song is one of the greatest things ever.
