So I go out to the kitchen to grab some orange juice and my sister comes in the front door

My mom and her have a bit of a heated conversation but my mom has this horribly irritating thing where she's always speaking in super hushed tones you can barely hear because she's enormously passive aggressive and won't say anything to anyone's face

My sister heads out the front door again to see to her workmate while my mom looks like she's gonna pop a vein

I ask what's up, she quietly, but venomously hisses the situation to me

Basically my sister's co-worker is drunk after a night at a nearby bar and lives downtown so my sister's trying to put her up here for the night

Before I can ask what the problem is I just look at the immediate front area of my house and understand, but I mean, come on

So my mom ends up making my sister and her friend wait outside for "five minutes" while she hurriedly tidies whatever she can to make the house look... not presentable, per se, but like some horrible diseased family of vagrants has not, in fact, broken in, murdered everyone and ransacked the place, hissing orders all the while at me to help in that barely audible way she does

And so I help out so as not to make the ladies outside wait so long they literally freeze to death, the task taking still longer than is reasonable as we are going by my-mom time and not normal-person time

Interesting highlights of ways this house is terrible that I have been reminded of in the last 15 minutes!

In the kitchen sink, the stray cat I found and wanted taken somewhere else last year has left everyone a surprise

There is a stained couch that has become that way due to drunkenness on the part of an older family member

There is various laundry strewn about on the living room floor because the couch is often used as a bed due to one of the bedrooms being basically uninhabitable

I mean, normally I hole myself up in my room since I can keep it livable compared to everything else around here and just pretend none of the rest of the house exists or at least isn't as bad as it is, but goddamn, sometimes some tiny little thing that shouldn't be a problem happens and it's a stark reminder of the kind of place this is

I can only really find it funny anymore
