Conservatives Is Weird: Failed(?) Armed Coup at Freedom Works Edition
We don't have a a LOLGOP/conservative movement thread at the moment, and this story is too bizarre to not post about. So let's enjoy
this story.
Richard K. Armey, the group’s chairman and a former House majority leader, walked into the group’s Capitol Hill offices with his wife, Susan, and an aide holstering a handgun at his waist. The aim was to seize control of the group and expel Armey’s enemies: The gun-wielding assistant escorted FreedomWorks’ top two employees off the premises, while Armey suspended several others who broke down in sobs at the news.
The coup lasted all of six days. By Sept. 10, Armey was gone — with a promise of $8 million — and the five ousted employees were back. The force behind their return was Richard J. Stephenson, a reclusive Illinois millionaire who has exerted increasing control over one of Washington’s most influential conservative grass-roots organizations.
Like... really? Disarray is one thing, but this shit is bizarre. Both in that a coup happened to seize control over a PAC and that they rewarded him with an $8 million dollar severance package. Well, re-seize control? Just, the whole thing is weird.
Would the Republican Party/conservative movement kindly get their shit together and start being a responsible partner in governing? It would make all of us much happier.
The idea that your vote is a moral statement about you or who you vote for is some backwards ass libertarian nonsense. Your vote is about society. Vote to protect the vulnerable.

You and what armey?
the "no true scotch man" fallacy.
I mean, I've been able to follow the rough outlines of the unlimited corporate donations and reclusive billionaires secretly pulling the strings of groups calling themselves grassroots movements, but... then Dick Armey walks into a building with a gun and walks out with $8 million and I'm pretty sure I just read the abandoned script of the next Oceans 11 sequel.
The billionaire Koch brothers backed THREE fake-ass "grassroots" PACs:
- American Crossroads
- Americans for Responsible Leadership
- Americans for Prosperity
At least all those millions wasted on losing campaigns are trickling down into the economy, amirite?

Like, even by GOP standards, this is in manwhutidon'teven territory.
While true, it's one of the reasons I'm opposed to people being able to carry firearms, every single meeting has a sinister undertone
It's like asking a girl to have sex when you take her out on an innocent fishing trip on a yacht

I'm going to check this thread while I'm 100% sober
to make sure it's real and stuff
I think if you got the right actors it could be a pretty amusing farce.
I mean, it probably helps to have a name as terrifying as Dick Armey but I figure the gun cant hurt.
I only wish to see him one more time, so that he may squirm and explain this one away

I'm thinking the Coen Bros. could make something of this.
There's only be one man who could write a script like this.

obviously the only way to even the playing field is for everyone to have a gun. Guy, girl, the barista, the bus driver, everyone you might have to exchange a few words with.
Truly it will be just like a cowboy movie.
Meh gun. Power armour for all! Only then will you be truly safe.
Pfft. The GOP doesn't make nearly enough dick jokes. Though they do have the awkward homophobia down pat.
I like the way you think.
No, only the politically connected have the juice to get away with something like this. Peasants would just be robbers or thieves.
The twist is they were really greedy coercive Republicans all along!
oh wait...
