[Riptide] Dead Island 2 Adventures in caricatures and torsos

Can I talk about the rampant sexism of the game and the gaming industry here?

There is a thread specifically for that, your opinion is valid and important but please don't discuss it here unless it is relevant to gameplay.

What is it?

Tech Island (developer) and Deep Silvers (publisher) sequel to Dead Island, sequel is the word being thrown around but its more of a DLC.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdtWdzXuL4A

Hey I played the last one, it was a fun little Co-oper but it had problems... have the problems been fixed?

No... No they have not.

Oh.. why should I get it?

Because killing zombies is fun.

Who are the pcs again?

Dead-Island-Riptide.jpg

Xian - Blades specialist
Sammy B - Blunt weapons specialist
Logan - Thrown Weapons specialist
Purna - Guns specialist

The new guy
2012-11-6_DeadIslandRiptide_Character_sm.jpg
John - Unarmed (fist weapons)

Whats new?

They added some new skills for everybody, new guy, raised the level cap to 70, new event type (base defense). Upgradeable NPCs, Mines.

Can I import my character from Dead Island?

Yes, but not their inventory just levels and cash.

Is it worth 40$ 31€?

No, the new things added don't warrant a full price game, it is still fun however, if you enjoyed the first one you will enjoy the second, my recommendation to my friends so far is to wait for it to go on sale.

Apologies first starting thread, and I haven't seen a riptide thread yet and I want some people to play with and complain to about specific gameplay issues. :D

How do I cheat my ass off like all the cool kids on the internet?

Changing durability decay can be done as follows
1> Head to the following folder in Windows 7
C:\Users\UserName\Documents\Riptide\out\data\skills
2> Open the default_levels.xml file (It can be done in wordpad, avoid IE as windows will suggest)
search for
BluntWpnDurabilityLoss
CutWpnDurabilityLoss
they should currently be set to 1.0
lower this value of you want slower decay to .5 for 50% and .25 for 25% compared to current durability (-1 for none?)
raise it over 1 if you think weapons are way too powerful and should shatter on hit.
save the file

What if I want to change my Field of View, Antialiasing, and other stuff that I did with dead island helper?

You are in luck Dead Island:Riptide Helper

What are the infinite xp/cash exploits I've heard about?

After you complete some quest lines you get a repeatable fetch quest which yields a signficant amount of xp (like 2-3% of lvl) and 2100 cash. Some of these items randomly show up on vendors for a few hundred bucks and you can buy as many of them as you have money for.

These items are
scrap electronics
blades

additionally the following items can be turned in the xp and cash but i dont think are purchasable.
painkillers
canned food

There many reports on the length of the game yet? Comparable to the first?

It took me 25 hrs to finish, my friend who didnt like the game finished in 10.

But I like to wander around just killing zombies and since i tend to watch tv or listen to the radio at the same time exploders get me every god damn time.

yeah I kept thinking it would pop up any time now, but since it hadnt by the time I was done with the game I decided to go ahead and half ass one.

They really did a piss poor job of explaining how to upgrade NPCs and the other immune, i always wondered why they were so awful in base defenses until i noticed I their upgrade quests were listed from the within menus and not by talking to them. I went the entire playthrough one with an un-upgraded base camp. I'm not sure how useful it will be but im back at paradise with everyone and level 2 or 3. Hopefully it will actually make a difference during the next defense.

Straight run through is being reported as 15. I'm doing a completionist run, I'm 20%ish through the main storyline at 10 hours played atm.

New stuff that wasn't mentioned in the OP:

New mods, new weapons (melee and ranged), new vehicle (boat), new enemies (normal and special), named badguys (super one of a kind optional zombie bosses), 'Dead Zone' dungeons (mini areas with rare materials and high enemy density), weapon affinity (your skill with weapons level up and you get dramatically better with them), defense missions (here, have a shitload of varied explosives and barriers to put down. Now survive!), more types of consumables (bunch of types of thrown and places traps/explosives now), guns are more dangerous now (and a lot easier to get after a while), general difficulty has been upped (more zombies, they hit harder, new attacks, quicker respawn times).

Imported my 43 Purna, grabbed the Nailgun and been having a blast. If you enjoyed the first, the second will come off like an improved Dead Island 1.5. If you didn't like the original, you won't like this one.

If you do get it, I strongly recommend the new Dead Island:Riptide Helper. It's a small third party utility which is configurable, and helps tweak visuals, improve performance, adjust gameplay and fix bugs.

Oh yeah. Biggest tweak. Guns are good now.

If I don't feel like facetanking a thug a facefull of pellets takes him down quick.

  • MetallikatMetallikat Registered User regular
You eventually get a kickass harpoon gun as a quest reward down the line as well. Does great damage, stumbles enemies it doesn't kill, and you can recover bolts from zombie bodies.

Nice idea but it's pretty useless without an explanation of what all those options actually do.

Not that I specifically disagree with this, but did a mod give this the go-ahead? Because the OP is not crowned ruler of the thread and doesn't get to micromanage the details on what gets to be discussed.

To reiterate, I think the statue issue is more or less over, but the thread exists for that so keep it there. Furthermore, the statue is also not part of the game itself (or at least I hope it fucking isn't), so just focus on the game for now.

The first thing I did after installing this game was carry over my edits from Dead Island so that melee weapons last considerably longer. Drove me nuts how fast weapons break. I set the durability decrease variables to 35% to 50% of the original values (depending on weapon type). Makes a pleasant difference while still making durability an issue.

And then I set it aside to go back and beat the first game again before diving into Riptide. I have a 45 Purna but figured a Sam B playthrough was warranted. Blunt-weapon zombie-head-bashing is so... satisfying.

There was no mod go ahead, and was not an attempt by me to make any rules, just a humble request about a topic that would invariably come up. If that was bad it can be removed or we can close this thread and let someone else make the next one.

No, I'm fine with that, but the way you phrased it implied a mod had something to do with it. In the future, just PM someone if you want a specific rule for a thread.

The best options in my opinion are changing the Field of View (the super narrow default tends to be give me a headache) and getting rid of radial blur. Also hovering over the options does give a description of what they do.

Keyboard and Mouse -> Fix Micro-stuttering (if you aren't playing with a controller)
Camera Tweaks -> Field of View (put it to whatever makes you feel comfortable, the default is just dumb)

The rest is gravy. If something in particular confuses you, ask. The app isn't well documented, but I've played around with it and the previous one a lot.

It's very much Dead Island Part 2. More of the same, a very few small tweaks. If you liked the first, you'll like this.

I'll say this though, Riptide is hard. In the original I maybe died...3 times? completing the game. In Riptide death is freaking around every corner. Fire off a gunshot and suddenly every zombie in a 3 block radius is aware of you. I've taken to carrying stacks of explosives around because the crowds get too much for me. Vehicles are like invitations to your own funeral; when I get out of a car I always stand around for a second to see if a squad of Infected is gonna come bolting down the road after me. And boats, oh wow. Those drowned zombies are nuts.

I really hope I get a rifle soon.

My brother's been playing this, and trying to get me to buy it too. Sounds like the worst parts of the first one are more prevalent in Riptide.

In the first one, starting off at the beach resort was just great. As soon as you get to the city, and get violated at every turn by infected, the fun greatly diminishes. Sounds like Riptide has more groups of infected in greater amounts mixed in with jerk ass special infected in greater quantities. This makes me want to wait on this, if I even decide to pick it up at all.

The one thing that's holding my attention is the dungeons. I understand there's "dungeons" in Riptide with named enemies that drop phat lewts. I guess I could always wait until my brother finishes it, or gets tired of it and borrow it from him.

Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.

I think Riptide's difficulty is probably amazing for multiplayer. For solo play it's a bit tense, but manageable. Bear in mind I'm playing Purna and I don't have proper guns yet. I think the melee oriented characters probably have an easier time of things. Once I get ammo recipes and some military firearms, the hunters will become the hunted.

The only absolutely 100% unforgivable bullshit I've run into is the town on the first map has areas where Infected (those fast running zombies) respawn instantaneously. Literally: you pop one, a replacement spawns behind him on a roof. I avoid those area like the plague, or navigate them via rooftop.

The first dead island also had instantly respawning infected in 2 areas. one was a tunnel from the hotel to the town center, and the other was the middle part of the town which was the "quarantined zone". Lots of barriers and warning signs but if you went in there you would get horribly mauled by the endless tide of infected. Luckily I think there was only mission that made you go into the quarantine zone.

  • Magic PinkMagic Pink Tur-Boner-Fed Registered User regular
I personally love all the new special zombies mixed in but there's certainly no more infected then there were before and what there were before I actually liked a lot. The infected were a nasty scary threat and I loved them; the City was my favourite zone in the first game. If anything, the area you run around in is more cramped, that's all.

There is a shitty habit of zombies literally spawning on top of you (you can see it on Youtube even) but hopefully that gets fixed.

Yeah, I found one of those areas too and it was on a roof just like you say. I would assume it's a bug because it's really dumb but I haven't found any other area where that happens.

The voice acting is sooooooo awful, but not awful enough to be hilarious which is disappointing.

As far as the rooftop spawning infected, it seems that it was only active for a few missions eventually it flipped to non spawning for me... and honestly I don't have those moments where there are lots of zombies on screen (maybe 7 or 8) but my Xian was level 38 when I started and a blade flinging angel of death (usually one shoting everything) and the rampage meter refilling every 10 or so zombies.

The 'dungeons' are not loot runs in the conventional sense. They do auto respawn by just zoning in and out but the named isn't particularly good at dropping loot. There are however 2 loot chests inside. I'd like to take this moment to explain how these chests work however. If you open the chest and see something you don't like you can leave and come back in to re-open the chest for something else (after fighting through zombies again) if you take the item from the chest it will no longer be open able until you quit out and restart.

So I imported my Logan and it reminds me how ridiculously overpowered Xian's threat radius reduction, most bosses don't even attack when im standing there lobbing thrown knives and swords at them, Logan's poor ass has infected from Palanai chasing him down still.

Definitely makes my candy ass assumption of difficulty change quite a bit from player to player.

Wow, there's some bugs in this. Every time I start the game it sticks me in a different place. And could thay have at least made sure the places it respawns you were zombie free? It really sucks to pop in and already have a bunch of zombies flailing at you.

The previous one didn't have this many checkpoints, resulting in a lot of lost work when a crash ocurred or you suddenly stopped mid-mission. Riptide at least adds mid-mission saves and a host more checkpoints. What I think happens is that sometimes you travel and miss hitting any checkpoints by proximity, resulting in your last position being saved as somewhere way back. It's only happened to me twice though.

I wish there were more fast travel spots, but I guess that would trivialize overworld travel :(

No, last night I had to restart several times and every time I loaded the same save it put me in a different place.

As for losing work I think all I've ever lost is travel time; I still have anything I picked up and XP.

I've actually noticed quite a bit more Fast Travel spots but that was when I actually started looking for them. They give you several without any fanfare whatsoever at least in the first area.
