Hey guys, I've already posted to FTDR, but I'm gonna take a few months off from reviews on the blog (not like I've been writing a ton). Will return for Horror Metal month (late September, most likely), if any of you with admin status want to write a review in the meantime, feel free to fill in the space. I'll still be checking forums and listening to promos and all that, just want to try a small vacation.

There's no correct vote thingy to your post bro.

I think you deserve as long of a break as you need but I have to admit that yours is a voice that is already missed. Your reviews have had a hugely beneficial effect on me, but I'm also a working dad so I understand the complete loss of free time that you are experiencing. Basically, this is a crappy Libra way of saying enjoy your vacation, good luck, Godspeed, and I am excited for your return!

As a forum lurker, I just wanted to say thank you for all you've done with the FTDR blog @autothrall ! I use it quite a bit, building a playlist that I listen to daily. I've always looked forward to your end of year round ups, and your posts here that highlighted some of the harder to find cuts (Satan, Realmbuilder*sp?Sulphur Aeon)!

Ditto on all the love @autothrall ! Your reviews and RYM lists have really meant a lot to me for these past few years. You deserve a rest

I'm still probably going to keep refreshing the blog every few hours though. Old habits die hard...

Thanks, guys, it means more than you could know. I'll still pop in here with any samples of things I hear in August, and will certainly return to reviewing later in September, recharged for the spookiness. It's not something I think I'll ever disappear from for too long, but right now I am finding inspiration elsewhere and wanna ride that out.

Some Sabbat (Japan) inspired raw blackened doom/speed metal whatever:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdjtynwx_ts

Throaat isn't far off, but they're from New York and play here in Mass sometimes. Amazing song title.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uohHSQHmirA

Both of these bands have new releases coming (EPs) that are pretty sweet, if you're into this style.

Yeah autothrall, take all the time you need. I'm mostly lurking these days when it comes to the metal thread and FTDR, since I haven't had much to contribute due to listening fairly little music and only part of it metal these days, but your posts are always brilliant. Stupid podcasts being incompatible with listening to music at the same time.

Lately I've been playing the Metal Opera parts I and II on the way to work.

Those make damn fine driving/commuting tunes, although Angel of Babylon is my favorite Avantasia album, lots of Jorn Lande and Russell Allen.

Thinking about Allen and power/progressive metal, Symphony X's latest dropped on Friday and I'm doing my first serious listen to it today. It's got a nice balance of heaviness and progressive elements, kinda like a mix of Iconoclast and The New Mythology Suite and Russell's vocals go all over the place:

Sarpanitum - Blessed Be My Brothers (Death Metal)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgC8Ig1ANTg&list=PLnDPLZmswAahdA5x6CcWv9HfOaM7bgnIm
I've been playing the fuck out of this brutal, atmospheric and seriously catchy shit. Despoilment Of Origin, which they released in '07, was a stand-out release that year, for me, and got very heavy rotation in my playlist. This 2015 release features a mostly new line-up from '07, including several members of Mithras and a sound that fuses Mithras's latter two full-lengths style to their own idiom as found on DOO. This is Sarpanitum's finest hour, and I think slightly (very slightly) edges out Mithras' best.
Sarpanitum - Despoilment Of Origin for those who missed it.

I'm not quite the doomster many of you are, but I'm liking this so far. It's not the most amazing thing ever, despite what the reviews and ratings on MA would suggest, but it's pretty good nonetheless and some of you will probably like it more than I do:
Cave of Swimmers - Reflection (Doom Metal/Progressive/Hard Rock)
Satan's Wrath - Die Evil (Black/Thrash Metal) Hail Satan!!

Back after 8 years of quiet:
    Dødheimsgard - A Umbra Omega (Avant-garde/Black/Industrial Metal)
Very interesting and dissonant, Gorguts and Ulcerate influenced TDM:
Ad Nauseam - Nihil Quam Vacuitas Ordinatum Est (Technical Death Metal)

I almost feel like this sound should have it's own sub-genre. I suppose we have enough of those already though. Either way I fucking love how it sounds like pure insanity in musical form. <3

I'm sure it's sampling error, but it may be a trend, because I've run into at least 5 Technical Death Metal albums this year with that dissonant Ulcerate and Gorguts influenced sound. I'm kinda hoping this sort will displace some of the wankery normally found in the average TDM band, because this is a lot more interesting than endless sweep solos. Now that I've posted Pyrrhon and Ad Nauseam I'll try to track the other similarly influenced albums I've found and post some 'tubes.

Also, while I really enjoyed their two most recent full length releases, the new one from Sickening Horror absolutely sucks ass.

It is definitely weaksauce compared to the first two albums. Quite shocking, really, would have been better just to shelf that.

To compensate, I offer this other Greek death metal band, their old albums were meh but this new one has a more raw, old school direction and effective, resonant evil songwriting. Whole album is solid.

Unrelated: the new Tribulation continues to grow upon me like a creepy kudzu. I now enjoy it more than Formulas of Death.

Hey now, let me in on the fun! (of sharing music, not writing. I'm not that confident in my abilities)

New Macabre Omen is out after 10 years and its worth the wait.
Porta Nigra is some entertaining avant-garde (I think) black metal
Some straight death metal that's really good
Ambient black metal side project of the guy behind Nightbringer.
A really nice Spanish black metal debut
And a new Greek black metal band that's really promising (seriously, where are they all coming from all of a sudden?!)
Xibalba is a mix of hardcore and death metal. I enjoyed this quite a bit.
Haar is a new progressive black metal group out of Scotland
And the new Cradle of Filth is really solid. This is pretty much the stuff that I dredged up after stalking Reddit's and NCS's 2015 lists

EDIT: Forgot the sister band to Cult of Fire. Surprised no one has mentioned this baby yet.

Pretty solid album. I feel it'd be better with some (well-done) vocals, but I always feel that way about instrumental metal.

I disagree on the hipster-ish feel of the band pic. Mustaches fit the doom 70's aesthetics, the guy's just so fucking redhead. And have you shopped glasses recently ? Pretty impossible to find good looking ones that aren't big black plastic frames.

There are definitely options that don't involve looking like Buddy Holly. Again, though, I don't think they're actually hipsters. I just saw the picture and laughed the first time I saw it, because it looks like a fake mustache.

I agree super hard that some good vocals would be nice, and I also feel that way about instrumental metal.

Sometimes the old traditions need to be kept alive. As such, I've pre-ordered Iron Maiden's The Book of Souls on vinyl. I make a point of it with new Maiden studio albums, even though I unfortunately no longer have the last few (which is a shame*, as they were uniformly awesome double picture discs).

    * - although, with the size of vinyl cover art, it might be a blessing on a purely visual level that Dance of Death is gone. Sad about the others, though.

27-second teaser clip from The Book of Souls here, by the way:

Although they're nowhere near as prolific as they used to be (seriously, this "one new album every four/five years" thing by so many of my favourite bands is getting seriously old, but then, so are the bands themselves I guess), their last few albums have generally been great, so I'm definitely hopeful.

Not especially br00tal, but Bong is a well-known doom name so... Anyhow! They've released this exquisite gem of an EP? LP? Supersweet melancholic drone, if you're needing something with a more meditative flavour, after a rough night out setting fire to churches or digging up corpses.

I'm in a phase where I listen to a lot of "non-musical" metal (lo-fi instrumental, drone-ish, ambient) and this really does it for me. I'll be sure to dig in their discography !
