We are all stuck at work, probably. Or looking for work. Or dreading the idea of work.
Come and share your woe, that it may multiply!

But raccoons are cool. I don't see the problem
ALSO: We managed to bust ass and get a project done and delivered to the group that has been dragging ass on answering questions we needed answered. I tell representative of said group that we should be done by day's end and his response was "took long enough." He then turned around and walked off.
If I stabbed him I would go to jail. There is truly no justice.

So I've got about a month and a half left at my summer job, and I'm still loving it but I am starting to look for other things so I don't have to go back to my restaurant for the winter. Ideally I'd find something like my job year-round, or something I can do in the winter/spring and come back here.
But then I saw this morning that there's a job posting for my other dream job - namely, as a footman in the royal household of England. I really want to apply even though I lack a passport (and am cursing myself for dithering so much about acquiring one).

What's a footman? Wikipedia says it's like a servant? You can be Alfred to the Queen's Batman?

Passports take like a couple weeks to get? The work visa would be harder
Well if she has to fight Killer Croc, yeah, she's going to need all the help she can get.
Bah, she may need someone to hold her back, maybe to pull her off her brutally beaten foe before she has a chance to tear out his throat with her teeth, but she doesn't need any help to take down the likes of Croc.
driving half the day tomorrow to get to a conference, then driving half the day to get back on Friday. And today I spent two hours animating videos of humphrey bogart and anthony hopkins because apparently it was urgent that a french planetarium have a robot that can impersonate these people at a moment's notice.

Just got a temp offer for an internal help desk position at Apple. This isn't the same one I applied to earlier this year with a different company so I'm good to go. Took the aptitude test and discovered, hey, I have aptitude. Gonna talk to the recruiter tomorrow morning and figure out things.
A kid selling chocolate covered almonds just wandered into the development area. I gave him a weird look and went to lock the front door after a few minutes. He was in the conference room, staring at the TV speculatively.
Hmm I just took a look at the UKBA immigration page and they've made it much harder to get in! You basically can't without a job offer anymore (or an ancestry visa)
Is it cool to post links to job listings here? There are a couple of openings in my company that may of interest, and I figured it's safer to ask permission then beg forgiveness.
I'm not the person hiring or interviewing, so I can't really do more then point in the general direction of HR's inbox and ask for resumes.
One time when I was in the USA I was staying up in a cabin near Lake Tahoe and went outside to have a smoke. I hear this grunting and snorting and being night time, I couldn't see shit so I automatically assumed it was a bear. "SHIIIIT" I think to myself as I scramble back towards the cabin, slipping and sliding everywhere on the icy path only to realise it's a couple of racoons just chilling next to our bins. We stop and stare at each other for a bit and one of them kinda raises it's paw up like it was waiting for some food, eyes looking up at me expectantly through it's little bandit mask.
On a related note, the fact that y'all coons was pretty disconcerting for me because here in Australia, that word is a hella racist term for the aboriginal people of Australia. 'Make sure you don't leave any rubbish out! Those coons will be on it like white on rice!' 'W-what?!'

Non-work related question for UK people: was Broadchurch really big in the UK? Cause BBC America hypes it like crazy and I've watched it all and it was good, but BBCA has a tendency to oversell and I'm curious if it was treated as "the best drama from the UK since Downton Abbey."

If they don't want people coming into work sick, they really need to give people sick days. Yes, you silly HR person. You can't have it both ways. And then she goes and gets bitchy after I point out that little conundrum. I really don't see the problem if one of my devs stays home when he's got the death flu. He gets all his shit done on time or ahead of schedule. Unlike HR.

Friend of mine and I keep talking about how cool it would be to open up a cool coffee place in the Orlando area. We're both coffee nerds, and we think we could maybe do something cool, and his dad has been looking for a neat project to invest in but ahhhhhh the whole thing sounds utterly terrifying

Well, I went in for my audition for the Busch Gardens Halloween event.
I was the first freakin' person they called up in front of everyone to tryout during the first set of auditions (as if I wasn't nervous enough already, having never acted or had an audition before).
Apparently I did well though, because I made it through all the auditions and got hired. One of the other people that got hired even commented to me that he thought I was the best one in the group, but I'm like 90% certain he was just being nice and making conversation.
So now I'll be working 7 days a week for most of the next two months (Mon-Thur at my normal office job, Fri-Sun at Busch Gardens). Hopefully I don't go insane. I also won't be getting to see my wife very much, but we need the extra money for Christmas time so hopefully it'll all work out.
Also, I learned something important about auditions. It sucks to go alone. Virtually everyone else that was auditioning was there with a group. I did manage to eventually socialize a little, though.
So, so many useful things I've sent to our CS Dept
"Oh hey, while I was working on another thing, I found a great way to notify you when an order that was placed on credit hold, had the hold removed, but hadn't yet been printed, to make sure you print it so it can go out to the warehouse to be picked and shipped, here's some detailed instructions on how to set it up and also I already made custom ones for each of you CS guys so it's literally just a few mouse clicks"
*one week later*
"WE HAVE A PROBLEM WITH ORDERS BEING TAKEN OFF CREDIT HOLD AND NOT BEING PRINTED"
The only emails I get from IT are fake spam emails to see if I'll open them or put them in the network spam folder. The only one that I got close to clicking was for free food, because all it takes for me to compromise security is the offer of free food*.
I keep having to send out regular reminders to staff about spam because somehow they haven't figured out that
nobody at work uses eFax on a regular basis, and certainly not internally
nobody at work has an American Express card (except for like, three people)
nobody at work has a Verizon account
And then as soon as I send it for the next several days I get everyone forwarding their spam to me going "WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH THIS?"

I don't really get red pandas.

I need to pack ...
This is such a weird office.
You might try and start another bloody revolution.

Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better

But then we call cigarettes fags.
I'm pretty sure those are offensive terms everywhere.
Sounds a lot like socialism to me.
Depending on the makeup of the crowd you're in, using the truncated version of the word 'raccoon' in America will get you into a world of hurt.
But if you're going for 'ironic lynching' then you'll be set!

then she was sposed to send it to client tonight after reviewing
but i do not think she did before e-mail went down.... which means she did not read the e-mail from IT either
ohhh well, i know she got it, nothing to be done, e-mail is down

No one reads emails from IT.
"AHHHH THE EMAIL ISN'T WORKING, WHAT DO WE DO"
"Something...else?"
Thankfully since I moved all the transactional stuff over to Mandrill invoices and shipping notifications and whatnot all still go out without issue.

Got in touch with one of the IT guys today, tried to get my web-mail reinstated:
"Okay, no problem, I'll just send you a new password that you can reset whenever. Aaaaaaaand done."
" ... Did you just send that to my personal gmail account or to the company email?"
" ... So, what's your gmail?"
*sigh*

sadly, a lot of people think the correct answer is to yell at IT
