I'm actually thinking about going to a midnight release at Gamestop for this. Never experienced one before however. I picture a long line of crazy teenagers hopped up on their energy drinks, wriggling about like addicts waiting for their fix.
I will most likely be worn out from work, half asleep, and will most likely complain about the line the entire time
fairly accurate. also, once you get into the store itself, expect the smell of body odor. tight space + lots of unhygienic people. the scent lingers. I know it's a stereotype, and I'm sure most are quite clean, but it only takes a few to really get that smell in there. I don't really go to midnight release anymore (that and the whole "getting too old for this shit" thing).
@ED! Have you tried the 'not-in-car' camera angle? Was this angle in previous GTAs? I have to wonder what the fuck R* were thinking and it's probably my only major gripe. Unlike any other driving game where you'd see the entire hood of the car in front of you, not here, oh no, here the camera only gives you half the view. Sort of like you're driving around with one eye closed. It's utterly useless.
Yea all the view modes are the same as they've ever been (I seem to remember Cinematic mode in San Andreas). I always figured it was for folks who want to make movies of the game.

I've been to a few Gamestop midnight releases. There was always, always a couple of assholes in line mocking and laughing at all the "losers" there to pick up a game. Except they were for the same reason as the people they ridiculed. Sigh.

It's usually not that bad if it's well organized. You show up at 10:30 or whatever to pay for your copy, then go stand in line for 90 minutes. Going through the final line is usually really quick when all they have to do is verify your physical receipt.
You guys think you got it bad, I still gotta wait for the "GameFly has Shipped..." email. Then the 2-3 day USPS turnaround. So I'll be checking in around Thursday night.

Cinematic camera is 'B' (on 360). I'm talking about the sort of 'in car view'. If you go through the camera angles you have near, far, farther and then 'hood cam'. The 'hood cam' is located on the left of the hood and apparently fitted with a lens so narrow you can only see things on the left side. I cannot fathom the reasoning behind this, why not just stick it in the centre and give the player the view of the full width of the car instead of something that's akin to driving around with your right eye closed.
Work day job today

Buy groceries (include extra snacks/drinks)

Work day job tomorrow
Wait (im)patiently for delivery
Call Supervisor and explain that I just can't make it to work Wednesday.

That always bothered me in GTA4. I was constantly nudging the right stick down so I could see over the top of my car so I could see down the road.
I've definitely had a different experience with midnight launches, than most of you guys. I've went to quite a few midnight launches at Tesco, here in the UK and they've always been great. Just normal people queuing and being polite. Perhaps if I went to dedicated game stores it would be different though.
Think I'm going to grab this at midnight tonight. =D

Yeah...I can't say I've ever seen midnight releases as the horrible experience some make it out to be.
The two "midnight releases" I've ever done knocked me walking into a Walmart at 11:55 and buying the game at the electronics counter and walking out. I think the most people I ever saw there were like 5-6 others for Gears 2. We even got a bunch of preorder swag for no reason.

In America, we determine our place in line through physical combat. Tire irons, burning barrels and rings of blood thirsty, cheering crowds may or may not be involved.

Yeah, I live in a suburban area so at midnight the only people who are going to be at our shopping center are people there for the games, movie goers, or those weird people who hang out or go shopping at Walmart past midnight.
I think the biggest line I ever saw was when some action game I was buying was released on the same day as Madden. Luckily they had three lines, and I was on the extremely short one.
I went to the midnight launch of the burning crusade. Listening to people talk about wow outside of guild chat is when I realized just how geeky this thing was. I still went home and reserved my female blood elf pally.

My closest game store is in an area with a moderate homeless population, and the fastest route over a large park which is only partially lit.
Midnight releases have that extra soupçon of danger. It's normally no riskier than any midnight stroll, but the idea of taking a new, expensive console home in the dark is making me think twice about the PS4 release.

yeah it's gonna be the closest race since...well a long ass time
Rockstar has warned Xbox 360 gamers not to install the Grand Theft Auto 5 "play" disc.
On Xbox 360 the openworld game comes on two discs: one mandatory "install" disc and one "play" disc, both around 8GB in size. It's a similar situation to Forza 4, which also shipped on two discs on Xbox 360.
Prospective GTA5 owners - some of which already have the game as a result of early shipping from Amazon.co.uk - might have wanted to install both discs, but Rockstar recommends against it.
"For optimal performance, we recommend not installing that disc," tweeted Rockstar Support.
Then, "An 8GB install is required. For optimal performance, we recommend not installing the play disc."
Rockstar has promised more information soon. For now, the upshot is, with GTA5 on Xbox 360, you have to install disc one but run disc two from the drive.
I installed it after I got fed up listening to my drive spinning constantly. I can't understand why the DVD drive would be more optimal than the HDD?
Presumably it loads from the installed stuff on the HDD at the same time as it loads from the DVD.
That said, unless it makes a serious difference, I'll pick a quieter console over faster load times.
Presuably at times it reads from the discs whilst reading from the mandatory install, doing both from the hard rive could cause slow down, if that's how it's been designed.
Is this like Forza where people were installing both discs from the system menu, when they really only had to install the play disc and running the game prompted the second disc install?

This. By installing the play disk you're essentially halving the available bandwidth to stream from the HD with, because it's streaming from two things at once on the same drive. By not installing you get the combined bandwidth of the HDD and the DVD drive. The downside is listening to your disk drive spin like mad constantly. :? I'll be installing, loading times be damned.
I'm allowing myself to care about the reviews for the next 10 minutes or so, as every site throws theirs up in an incredibly misguided and old fashioned attempt to garner page hits.
