    Well, I was born in 1988, so I vaguely remember Cabbage Patch kids, I think my sister had one that we played with sometimes. Must have mostly missed this stuff though.

    Might not be popular for me to suggest that it may be a boy thing to be into gross stuff for a brief period as a kid. I don't really like what I'm looking at now, but if I stumbled upon this stuff at the right time in my life I probably would have been into it.

    Then less than a year later grow out of it

    Eh, I was super into playing with bugs and in the mud (to my mother's woe) for a long time as a kid, and I super wanted the Creepy Crawlers lil kit thing for years (and never got it) and I knew boys who just wanted to be clean and to play with the 'inside' toys. So while I know what you're getting at, it's probably not why I don't remember the Garbage Pail kids from my youth. Might have been over-protective mormon parents sheltering me? Who knows.

    Or maybe I saw them as a kid and dismissed them as dumb.

    Then yeah, more a sign my sisters were not into the gross stuff. And that my parents were wise enough to shelter me from this and many other things. Other things probably being girls being gross.

    I used to play with mud for hours when I was a kid, and later realized I was mostly making rudimentary Dorodango. All I knew was that some mud could be compressed into a ball and if you kept fussing with it, they woud go kind of shiny.

    During this period of time, I was also pretty anti-pants, so I would mostly wear a lot of dresses, and then sit right in the mud. Ah, youth.

    My sister was of the whole 'ew gross, avoid icky things' camp though. Largely because my mother traumatized her about 'germs' when she was little in an attempt to have her first born child be clean.

    She tried it with me too, but I just went all 'So what you're telling me is that there are cool little invisible monster things all over that mud pit over there? Sounds like adventure, let's do this.'
