Damn, there was a good comic on tumblr about tumblr. It's a variant of the 'gullible on the ceiling' prank. Except instead of looking up, everyone just keeps telling other people and getting outraged that someone wrote gullible on the ceiling. So it's a room full of people complaining about gullible being written on the ceiling who never look up. Can't find it though.
It's not really the people on tumblr's fault. Tumblr itself doesn't sort or do discussion in a way that benefits fact checking and discussion.

Tumblr's like, a microcosm of the internet. There' s not much point in trying to attribute anything to the site as a whole when there are hundreds or thousands of communities there.

It's difficult with tumblr because the communities are so nebulous
There isn't a name or title for where groups congregate except the name of the whole, so instead of saying 'yeah, the followers of this user are kinda tools' it's 'man, this thing from tumblr is really silly'
so when things are attributed to the whole site taking it as attacking your bubble is a miscommunication
