Well... shit. One of the most genuinely unique artists in recent memory.

To be honest, I actually thought he had died years ago based on how people commented on his works (past-tense).

Sucks that he died that way :(

Oh, no! I love his work. A friend had a big coffee table book of his stuff with lots of anecdotes about the making of the Alien series. Apparently the 'lips' of the alien eggs were originally designed to open in half instead of fourths but it too closely resembled the female anatomy and the studio was sure the church would raise all hell.

As an aside, can we get mod permission to [NSFW] tag this thread so we can post and discuss the man's art?

i think we don't actually do this

And a big chunk of this guy's work would be grossly unsuitable for inlining even with the NSFW label. Because holy shit.

I submitted an entry to Lego Ideas, and if 10,000 people support me, it'll be turned into an actual Lego set!If you'd like to see and support my submission, follow this link.

His artwork even made it onto guitars.

It figures it'd be Ibanez, though.

For a long time I had a limited appreciation for Giger, until reading on his rationalizations behind the designs for the Alien and its various life stages revealed one of the first modern examples of creature design that was more than a scary thing, but was actually realized in terms of Why it had certain features, in how the anatomy served the life cycle and helped the thing survive. There's an essay he wrote....somewhere...online that goes into detail on this process. The level of intelligence he put into realizing the Alien is commendible.

His visual contributions to Prometheus were the absolute best part of that film.

well jeeze that's why you don't build your stairs out of the phallic sharpened ribbing of xenomorph skeletons

every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.

Haven't actually seen the entire movie; the part I ended up seeing just pissed me off so much I couldn't watch the rest of it.

My first exposure to him was Brain Salad Surgery by Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. Dad had both the LP and a cd in a special case that mimicked the LP cover.
That hauntingly beautiful woman, then opening the cover and then that bio-mechanical aspect is turned up.

Then I saw Alien/Aliens and started making the connection.

And now I can't go down on a female without thinking about getting Facehugged (not that I would mind at that point).

Seriously, look at the underside of a Facehugger and a woman's lady parts. The eggs may not have been able to open like he wanted but he still got that in there.

Look, if we're going to get into all the sexual imagery that Giger slipped into the Alien franchise, we're going to need a bigger thread. And then probably a second thread as well.
Cause damned near everything in those movies was dude bits or lady parts run through a WTF filter and given teeth.

Fassbender's performance was very good. Otherwise, yeah, not a great film.

Loved me Giger's work, very unsettling stuff.

Without actually tracking down the whole thing... the life-cycle of the Xenomorph incorporates sexual imagery both female and male and its life-cycle contains symbolism of dark sexual natures. The egg is obviously vaginal in nature, as is the facehugger, but the facehugger performs violent sexual actions as a male, forcibly penetrating the host and impregnating them, in essence raping them. And when the larvae is born, they erupt in a bloody fashion after "kicking" a bit, in a macabre take on pregnancy. The adult Xenomorph, of course, is just dripping with phallic symbolism from head to tail (haha) and mouth-in-mouth.

As someone who was inspired by this good man's art and Aliens in particular when I was a kid, and has been developing a xenomorph inspired race for my own fiction ever since, I am very sad right now.

All the best to his wife and family.

The first image, sure. I can see it.

The linked one? Nope. I don't get a metroid vibe... Just a macabre and grotesquely sexualized biomechanical work... So, y'know, Giger.
