I could also be right but the remake was a TV movie with a sappy ending where the dad redeems himself and his ghost sees his kid graduate college so fuck king's vision the original is demonstrably better.

the most crucial thing to know is how to remove the toxic elements from the distillate
also, you need very high temperatures for a still, and you're producing extremely flammable ethanol and methanol. and there's high pressures often involved. there's a reason home stills often explode.
finally, you have to be able to measure the concentration of ethanol in your final product even if you've removed the methanol. a very high concentration of ethanol (a very high proof) is dangerous to drink even in small amounts.

Hmm it seems King's problem with Kubrick is he didn't use the hotel King was inspired by, he didn't focus on alcoholism enough, he hinted the main character was going to go crazy by miscasting Nicholson, and downplayed the supernatural aspect too much.
Personally I think King is kinda like George Lucas. There's some great ideas there that need help from others or else you get eight foot tall fear spiders that basically turn a truly scary monster into a joke.
