It's been nearly seven years since the last Super Smash Bros. graced our televisions. While Brawl had its share of problems, nobody can deny the meticulous attention to detail and the masterful presentation that oozed throughout. Now it's time for a new era of Smash Bros., and this year we're getting TWO games at once: Smash Bros. for the Wii U and Smash Bros. for the 3DS. It's looking like maximum Smash Bros. saturation in here.
The Golden Smash Rule: Do not bring up competitive vs. casual bullshit. I do not understand why people think a game can only be played one way, and that the one way just
coincidentally happens to be their way. Regardless, it will not be tolerated here. Complaining about arrogant tournament players or filthy casual scrubs will net you an infraction. This was something that plagued the Brawl threads, and thus far the modern Smash threads have been refreshingly clean of all that garbage.
So read on, and bask yourself in all the information as we celebrate a new era of Smash.

The 3DS version will feature
over 100 songs, and the Wii U version is likely to have even more. Once again, you get a handful of songs per stage and you can pick which songs play, although the 3DS will be far more limited with about two songs per stage. Songs can be found
here, but here are some choice tracks.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUaJmum_XWshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dndbyEzvtlAhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drC3KlXFqmMHOW DO I UNLOCK EVERYONE?
I'll keep this in spoilers for those that want to be surprised. Keep in mind that this is currently just for the 3DS, and it is unknown if the Wii U will differ in unlocking methods.
All characters can be unlocked by playing a number of matches in Smash mode (which is the same as "Brawl" or "Melee" in the other games). There are no specific requirement for what counts as a "match" so the fastest way to unlock everyone is to do a bunch of one-stock, Sudden Death AI matches. In addition, most characters have an alternate method of unlocking that is usually tied to Classic Mode, which is much slower but will award you with more coins, trophies, Mii outfits, equipment, and custom moves.
Once a requirement is fulfilled, you will have to beat the character in a 1v1 single-stock match to unlock them. If you screw up and lose, then don't lose hope: that character will continue to challenge after you finish doing basically anything (even if you satisfy another character's requirements in the process).
- Ness: Beat Classic Mode once OR 10 Matches
- Falco: Complete Classic Mode without continuing OR 20 Matches
- Wario: Complete 100 Man Melee OR 30 Matches
- Lucina: Beat Classic Mode with Marth without using any continues OR 40 Matches
- Dark Pit: Beat Classic Mode with three characters OR 50 Matches
- Dr. Mario: Beat Classic Mode with Mario on Intensity 4.0+ OR 60 Matches
- ROB: Collect 200 trophies OR 70 Matches
- Ganondorf: Beat Classic Mode with either Link or Zelda on Intensity 5.0+ OR 80 Matches
- Mr. Game & Watch: Beat Classic Mode with ten characters OR 90 Matches
- Bowser Jr. Beat Classic Mode with Bowser on 6.0+ Intensity OR 100 Matches
- Duck Hunt Duo: Beat Classic Mode with eight characters OR 110 Matches
- Jigglypuff: Collect 30+ equipment items OR 120 Matches
How do I access additional rule settings/random stage filter?
Amass 200 KOs. You can check the records section to track your progress. Note that online modes still count towards this.
(3DS) Are there more challenges after the first 35?
Once you finish the first 35, another panel with more challenges opens up. Hammers
don't carry over, so just use them on more time-consuming stuff for that panel. Also, any challenges you complete on on subsequent panels will not unlock their rewards until you unlock that panel (second panel unlocks with 35 challenges and the third unlocks with around 60 challenges). Once you do that, every challenge you have cleared will immediately be completed.
What is GSP?
Global Smash Power. It means your performance was better than X other people in the world. The higher it is, the better you are doing.
How do I unlock alternate moves and costumes quickly!?
First off, you are more likely to unlock alternate moves for the character you are playing. Not a guarantee, but odds are better. The best way to get customizations is to play Classic at a comfortable difficulty and watch the slots. Wait for the thing you want and hit the home button. When you resume play while spamming the A button, the roulette will land on that spot. If the roulette is transitioning between two items, it will land on the item coming up. Keep in mind that eventually the roulette will stop on its on, so you may have to settle for less, but this method should net you anywhere from 6+ customizations a run.
Another option is Trophy Rush. Pick Donkey Kong, max out the time, and spam down B while dodging obstacles. You should be able to pick up three customizations every 2.5 minutes this way. The final alternative is to grab a speedy character in Smash and just scour the map for treasure chests. They usually drop one customization per chest, so you
might have a big payout.
Will there be cross-platform multiplayer?Nope. The two versions will have some kind of interplay, but you'll be limited to fighting people who own the same version(s) as you.
How different are the versions?
Rosters are going to be identical, but there
might be differences in how a character plays on each version. Stages will differ, with the 3DS having stages taken from handheld franchises and the Wii U preferring stages rooted in home console history. Oh, and if you hate or love the outlines on the 3DS character models, then you'll be happy to know that you can make them thicker or disappear entirely!
The Wii U will have much deeper options for stage musical selections compared to the 3DS having just two options per stage. However, the 3DS will get an exclusive mode called "Smash Run" that is similar to City Trial from Kirby's Air Ride.
Tripping is...?...gone. The goal is to strike more of a balance between accessible party game and competitive fighter. Basically, somewhere between Melee and Brawl.
What is the plot of Story Mode this time?
There is not going to be Story Mode like Subspace Emissary. It was not terribly well-received (not awful, but also nothing super exciting), so instead the series is going back to something closer to Melee's Adventure Mode where you just run through franchise-themed levels with no real plot connecting anything together. Because the cutscenes were popular, it looks like there will be a cutscene for finishing Adventure Mode (maybe). Sakurai has also said that, since a lot of people just looked up Brawl's cutscenes on YouTube, his team is going to simply create cutscenes to announce new characters. At the bottom of this post, you can see all these that have been released thus far.
What gimmicks are we getting with the Game Pad/Touch Screen?
Nothing that will affect the main gameplay, just menu navigation and some mini-games. If the Wii U version has stage creation (the 3DS does not), then it would really useful for making custom stages. Sakurai said that the two-pad limit for Wii U would make any touch screen feature unfair, and there's probably no touch screen gimmick for the 3DS because it'd be annoying as hell.
Any character changes?
Transformation characters like Sheik and Samus are now broken up into standalone characters, and some moves and final smashes are changing. For example, Olimar's recovery is now the flying Pikmin instead of the Pikmin Chain, and Luigi's Final Smash uses the Poltergust. There's too many tweaks and change than I can really encapsulate here. There also appears to be more in the way of alternate costumes (Little Mac has a wireframe skin, Mario has an outfit from Mario Golf, and gender options for characters like Robin and Villager). There are also "custom moves" which can be tweaks or changes to how a character attacks. Like Kirby can change his B from the standard inhale to a freezing breath or adding a small dash to it. For most characters these are just tweaks to moves, but for Mii Fighters and Palutena it's a large part of their gimmick. Note that custom moves cannot be taken online, and while I'm not sure how this will work for Palutena, the Mii Fighters can only be used in friend matches so far as online play goes.
How is online?
Two modes: For Fun and For Glory. The former is fun time mode which opens up every stage and item except for Final Destination. The latter is Serious Business and turns off all items and stages barring Final Destination and the Omega versions of other stages (which is basically a reskinned Final Destination) along with a crude rating system. Matches with friends will offer the full suite of match options, so you can play however you want with buddies.
I can only play Smash with a Gamecube controller! How can I keep my Smash experience pure!?
Nintendo is releasing an official adapter for Gamecube controllers that plugs into one of the Wii U's USB ports. Going one step further, there's even going to be a special Smash-themed Gamecube controller released alongside it. The adapter is $20, the controller is $30, and there will be a special bundle of Smash Bros. for Wii U that has the adapter and controller for $100 (which means you save about $10 assuming Smash will retail at $60). The adapter is fully compatible with all first-party Gamecube controllers, including the Wavebird.
What other purchasing options do I have?
For 100 bucks you can buy the Amiibo bundle for the Wii U version, which includes a Mario, Pikachu, and Link Amiibos. If you don't need a Gamecube controller to play, and you love little plastic toys, then this option will save you a few bucks. On the 3DS front, there looks to be a double-pack option, but it's limited to European smashers. If you need to buy a 3DS, there is also going to be a special 3DS XL with a Smash Bros. design on the front of it. It doesn't come with the game, nor does it offer any real savings compared to normal XLs, but it's a limited edition XL which may be neat to have if you like the design. It'll retail for $200 and release September 19th.
Oh, and if you register
both games on Club Nintendo, you'll get the Smash Bros. soundtrack absolutely free! I needn't tell you what a deal that is.
I need to know Smash lingo. What the fuck does "DI" mean?Armor - An attack or special move that provides immunity to knockback. The character will still take full damage from the attack, but will suffer very minor knockback or even known at all. Armor is not universal, and if knockback passes a certain threshold then the armor may be ignored.
Clone - A bit of a contentious term, it's basically a character that uses a pre-existing character as a template for their moves. Falco, for example, is a clone of Fox since his special attacks are all very similar to Fox's. There's a lot of hair-splitting over what makes a clone, and then you have terms like "semi-clone" confusing the matter. Clones, while unpopular because they're seen as lazy, are a pragmatic way to squeeze in a few extra characters since you don't have to spend as much time developing their movesets. Despite the name, a clone is never 100% identical to the template character, with plenty of differences in damage, knockback, hitboxes, and so on.
DI - Directional influence. Most players DI subconsciously: basically you have subtle control over your character when they ate a hit and are flying through the air. By pressing the control stick in the right direction, you can minimize how far you go flying out of the stage by changing your trajectory. Done properly, this can mean surviving an attack you otherwise would have been KO'd by. DI does not exist in Smash Bros. 4, being replaced with a vectoring system.
Edgehogging - Grabbing the edge of the stage to prevent an opponent from grabbing on. Since you gain brief invulnerability by the grabbing the edge, you can make it impossible for an opponent to recovery if your timing is right. In Smash Bros.'s 4, a player holding onto the ledge will be dislodged by a player grabbing the edge, effectively removing edgehogging from the game.
Hitbox - The invisible areas of an attack that will damage a player if it connects. These tend to use different shapes than the attack animations, and thus aren't going to be a 1:1 translation of what the attack looks like.
Hurtbox - The invisible areas of a character that will result in damage being taken if hit by an attack's hitbox. Like hitboxes, these uses simpler shapes and aren't always going to look exactly like the character model.
Meteor Smash - An attack that sends an opponent straight down. Normally used to kill players trying to recover, but there are ways to recover from being meteor smashed.
Perfect Shield - Using your shield right before an attack hits you. This has a somewhat different sound and visual effect than normal shielding, and the character that pulled off a perfect shield can immediately attack right after. Perfect shielding is very difficult to pull off, but allows you to quickly perform a counterattack.
Spike - Similar to Meteor Smashes, only a bit more secure since the victim has to wait a short duration before they can do anything.
Teching - Hitting shield right before your character lands after taking a hit. Basically your character will perform a much faster recovery animation when getting up after a successful tech, which can save you from eating combos.
Tiers - A listing of competitive viability of each character, normally based on how many favorable matchups they have against another character. Tiers are fluid, and just reflect the current overall metagame, and it's possible that new tactics and tricks can cause characters to rise or fall. This is especially true early on, where it's not uncommon for characters to experience large jumps and falls on the list. To say tier lists are contentious is a massive understatement, and it's worth noting that tier lists are not gospel but just rough estimations. A character higher on the tier list is not guaranteed to beat a character lower than them: they are just favored to win based on that character's performance in previous tournaments.
Tripping - In Brawl characters have a random chance to stumble, making them vulnerable for a brief period. This "feature" was much loathed by just about everyone, and it was probably added to the game as a way of distancing Brawl from the hyper-competitive game Melee had become. It's not coming back in SSB4, but it gets brought up in casual vs. competitive fights.
Wavedashing - A skill in Melee where players could use the game's physics to slide and quickly move or change directions. You also aren't considering dashing while doing this, so you can do other attacks while wavedashing that you couldn't while normally dashing. This technique was removed in Brawl (and is probably gone in SSB4), but I mention it because Wavedashing always gets brought up when the subject of competitive play gets trotted out. It's worth noting that Sakurai was aware of wavedashing when developing Melee, so take that as you will.

Why I fear the ocean.
B - A mech pops out of the top of the tank and fires a missile.
Tilt B - a stream of infantry rush out of the tank to attack.
Down B - Infantry with binoculars pops out of the tank. Off-screen Artillery fires a volley at a spot.
Up B - B. Copter tows the tank upwards
Final Smash - Victory March: you get the Super CO Power graphic and the sprite of bases start popping up on the stage and spawn infantry that pour out of them and damage enemies that collide with. The tank is active during this. Or you can do Airborne Assault, which just has the infantry parachuting in and murdering anyone they touch.
Has any digging worked out what all that spare space in Smash 3DS was for? I know everyone immediately assumed DLC, but I was wondering how much of that is dedicated to replays. Also they know there's an Amiibo patch incoming, although I would assume it is mostly on-disc.
If anything, SSB4 is better since the remaining characters were our version of Wolf (Dark Pit) but Duck Hunt Dog and Bowser Jr./Koopalings are way cooler than ROB and Toon Link.
I was thinking Sami would play like Jill from MVC2, a few moves of her own and specials call in infantry/mechs/tanks/rockets from off-screen.

But you don't understand, plufim!
Lucina and Robin (beloved characters from a longstanding Nintendo franchise that just got catapulted up a few tiers in popularity) were included instead of King K.Rool (villain from old, often kinda shit Donkey Kong games who hasn't been seen in years.)!
They HAVE TO protest!
Why I fear the ocean.
King K Rool is literally the worst character Rare came up with.
This is silly goosery that will only lead to arguments. You can make your point without framing fans of certain characters in such a light or bringing us to that stupid "deserves a slot" argument. Especially on the first page.
Maybe after Kiddy Kong and Candy Kong.
K Rool would have been alright, but I'd rather have Wart. His moves could use Clawgrip/Triclyde/Mouser/Fryguy. Or Tatanga in his little ship!
Geno and Mallow would be perfect for Smash, and many more would be pretty rad too, like Jinx, Booster, Smithy, Johnny Jones
Also, huge shoutout again to @Jishian for calming the raging turmoil in my soul
...now if only it'll actually download instead of giving me Error Code: 007-2913

*Yes, I know your CO rides shotgun in Days of Ruin, but that's one game.
I'll never understand why people like those characters so much... especially Geno
Either way, none of those characters are important enough for roster slots. Maybe an assist trophy, but that is pushing it.
That one mode in Dual Strike, you actually drive your little tank around in real time and shoot people. So what you're suggesting isn't completely ridiculous.
I also had a CPU Villager hit me with the watering can just after I pulled up from the ledge and it almost didn't let me grab back onto the ledge. It's a very low FLUDD.
Geno is a supernatural being that possessed a superhero doll (action figure?) that has guns that shoots stars, cannons built into his elbows, and also giant fuckoff laser beams and a giant razor disc.
I love Geno!
A giant razor disc that makes skyscraper-sized swords cry in the corner at night.

I would assume so. 3DS version is not out internationally. Wii U version is not out anywhere. No reason not to keep doing them.
What I wonder is if they will keep doing character reveals, or if he's going to leave the rest "secret." I mean, I am guessing he will leave *some* secret, but I can't believe he wouldn't have made videos for Bowser Jr. and Duck Hunt Dog at least...
Edit: Speaking of which, weren't these videos supposed to be available via a menu in the game? I swear he promised that. I have yet to see anyone who has it mention that. Maybe only in the Wii U version?
Technically Lucina is an unlockable tho :P Also with Brawl they all had in-game videos even though they were not spoiled on the website.
Edit: They also basically revealed Game & Watch and Dark Pit in videos, though not explicitly.
And as a side note, it occurs to me that they are finally not locking Captain Falcon anymore, are they? I wonder what it will take for them to not lock Ness either. There's certainly no reason to, he has been in every game :P I would say the same for Jigglypuff but whatever, there are a billion unlocked Pokemon characters already so whatever, she can stay locked.
Second of all, MEGAMAN IS SO FUN TO PLAY AS AND I AM REALLY REALLY HAPPY.
Stray thoughts:
- His UpSmash is beastly. Probably one of his best moves. Good damage, appears to suck enemies in, quick to come out, seems difficult to punish, sets up into aerial combos very nicely. Dash into UpSmash is a great way to punish opponents.
- Having a jab attack that can use while short hopping is amazing.
- He's an edge guarding monster. The dtilt has pretty good priority and can catch opponents before they grab the ledge if you time it right. His jab can rob opponents of their momentum and push them further away from the stage. His bair hits hard and seems to have range and priority. And then there is of course the ranged smash attack. Hell, you can even use Leaf Shield to make it more difficult for opponents to safely get off the ledge.
- On that note, spiking with Hard Knuckle is always super satisfying.
- Leaf Shield's an interesting move. Seems to be a good way to punish opponents who are getting a little dodge happy - if someone tries to dodge around you and you fire this up, they'll often get some hitstun off of one of the leaves and then you can follow up with a throw. It can also be useful sometimes for edge guarding. Seems to beat out a lot of other projectiles when thrown, making it a good way to close against other ranged attack users.
- One neat thing about Crash Bomb is that it sticks to the stage. When you're trying to recover from off stage, you can fire it at the edge. It'll either blow up before you grab the ledge or while you've got invincibility frames, but it makes edgeguarding trickier for your opponent.
Earth & Sky is the silliest thing in Advance Wars.
