When I was a teenager I worked a summer job at the local Six Flags. One night at a cast party Mick Foley showed up to ride the rollercoasters! I brought my copies of his books but was too nervous to ask him to autograph them.
I stood in line behind Ron Jeremy in an airport while he talked to people on the phone. My younger brother knew who he was right away. From the topic of his conversation, I figured that the guy was a porn star, but I had no idea why my brother was so amazed.
People I've been near but not actually met:
Stood behind Evander Holyfield in the security line at the Miami airport in 2011.
While in the Army in 1996, we were sent to the Olympics in Atlanta to answer phones and watch security cams, while the National Guard patrolled, some law called Posse Comitatus that meant we couldn't act as a police force in the US. I was stationed at Morehouse College, and went to see the US women's basketball team play against Cuba. I was about ten feet away from Chelsea Clinton, saw David Robinson, Charles Barkley, Karl Malone and Scottie Pippen.
For a while, I was transferred to the Georgia Congress Center, and saw Shaquille O'Neal. I was standing on a balcony overloooking a main hallway, and saw a throng of humanity walking below me. Right in the middle was this very tall man, and it took me a moment to see who it was. But he towered over the perfect circle of people surrounding him and following him. It was hilarious watching those people massed around him.

Aside from Con meetings I got to meet Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), Jason David Frank (Tommy Oliver, Green Ranger, MMA), George Takei when they stopped by my local game store in the Metroplex. Mr Mayhew stuck around for a while after the signing and chatted with the local 501st and R2-D2 builders club members. He seemed really cool and relaxed just hanging out.
They set up signing events every so often in conjunction with the Dallas ComicCon. It's fun to get signatures and listen to celebs talk to fans while playing Imperial Settlers or Race for the Galaxy with my friends.

Freezepop: Went to see their show at a small club in Miami, while I was paying cover, the band walks up, and the bouncer asks them for cover to see Freezepop. They replied "We are them." Then the group I was with and the whole band laughed and we all took a picture outside the club.
At a hotel in the Bahamas I technically met Scotty Pippin. Well, my brother did, while wearing his jersey I guess? And got his hat signed. I was too young to know who he was.

I met Barry Sanders at an arcade when I was a kid. He was super-cool about talking to my friend and I, but would not interrupt his pop-a-shot game to sign autographs.
Former MLB players Eric Wedge and Johnny Damon both dated my sister when they were playing minor league ball, so they were over at the house quite a bit.
My 15-year-old friends and I tried to bum smokes from The Roots after a concert in 1997. They were not having it.
NBA player Kirk Hinrich was a huge cock to my friend and I while he was still at KU. I also hung out with Maurice Evans a couple of times when he played at WSU because my buddy was his tutor.
