Honestly the skin head aesthetic has made a pretty big come back in recent years, just significantly less agressive looking. A bit hipster and left wing fringe still I guess.

The synth/new wave scene flirted like heck with authoritarian looks in the 80s and 90s. Boots, shirts, ties, strict hairstyles...

Skinhead in the U.S. got co-opted by the neo nazi movement to the point that it would take a lot to rehabilitate it.

    ditto in the UK

i think the ones who weren't far righters eventually gave it up because it got to the point where if you were bald and wearing a bomber jacket and Doc Martins you were very much labeled a neo nazi

Laibach is as much art installation as it is a band.

Here's them taking the piss out of nationalism. (maybe NSFW, can't remember if this was the video with some brief titties.)

Boringly, the reporter photo might just be down to them needing both heads in one shot and the box was the only way of managing it, turning an eight inch disparity into four inches.

Laibach will be the first foreign band (...or maybe band in general?) that gets to play in North Korea.

Do they even know anything about Laibach

When I was a young punk the skinheads were at almost every show. Usually a small group. Liked to pick fights. Also not so hidden nazi undertones. Just one of the bad parts of the scene.

And I say "flirted with authoritarian looks" because every damn synther I know is left as heck. The whole style was about mocking authoritarianism.

Well yeah, it's not like reporters carry around a ton of ways to add an exact amount of height for a shot.

Are people getting uppity because he stood on a box so that he was taller?

It has been easier to rehabilitate for women I've noticed, less association with violence I guess.

I think news crews carry around boxes that are the exact height that allow lights and cameras to be put inside them

Uppity? I dunno. It's a picture on Twitter. Some people somewhere will take it as evidence of male insecurity, BBC lie campaigns, extra-dimensional lizards and a secret society of short men making themselves look bigger of which Tom 'Thumb' Cruise is the lifelong President.

Didn't you grow up in Colorado?

Fuck we did different stuff at shows.

Also racism in Colorado is funny, because there are almost no black people, and the Latinos are super low key. So it's just white people being angry at nobody really.

Feindflug is WW2-themed. Big surprise there.

from the AU/NZ Politics thread: the flags chosen by the NZ flag committee as the top 40

this is going to be a real "lesser of forty awfuls" situation for the NZ public

Admittedly I don't know anything about this whole situation, but it sort of looks like the committee said "We want you to be as creative as possible, but the only shapes you can use are stars, curly thingies, and ferns. And, I dunno, triangles I guess."

And Mike Davison raised his hand and they rolled their eyes and sighed "Yes Mike?" and he said "WHAT ABOUT THE UNION JACK" and they said "No, goddammit, Mike, you can't use the Union Jack" and he submitted his design all like "It's not technically the Union Jack!" and the committee ground their teeth and counted to ten.
