Red Vines are superior to Twizzlers in every category imaginable.

That being said, both are not very good.

I'm arguing that Red Vines are not the same as saying "Kleenex" when you mean face tissue. Ie nobody says pass the red vines when they see Twizzlers

I think you guys agree but maybe you don't know what a "proper noun" is.

He doesn't, which is why this argument is so confusing and flawed. He's thinking of a genericized trademark, like the aforementioned Kleenex instead of facial tissue, or Band Aid instead of adhesive bandage.

What I'm saying has nothing to do with that. I'm saying Red Vines are a brand and thus should be referred to as such, even if the flavor or color changes.

I thought it was a prett good UPF. The game Rorie played looked cool, I'm glad the game Drew played got more exposure (though I probably would never play it) and Dan on the bike wa pretty funny.

  • MaddocMaddoc I'm Bobbin Threadbare, are you my mother? Registered User regular
It just wasn't that good. Dan's VR biking was the high point but watching Brad open some Destiny boxes was dead goddamn boring.

If, like me, he subscribed during the big sale last year, it's coming up for renewal at the higher price. Didn't watch UPF, but that seems like the kind of thing Rorie might have mentioned.

Should have renewed when they had the sale in... November? $35 but no shirt.

I'm in the same boat, should have renewed then as well.

I don't think my renewal is until August.

I am just really not enjoying most of their output these days.

Beastcoast is great, because Vinny and Austin are amazing and Alex has made great strides. Feels like west coast is plummeting in quality. Tuning in to see twenty minutes of them milling around Destiny microtransactions didn't help matters. The entire chat was begging them to stop.

I know they've always been outspoken about their lack of desire to just give people the content they want, and that's fine, but I'm not paying for it. West coast personalities don't cut it anymore. Keep Jeff and Drew, ditch the rest.

Unprofessional Fridays are very much garbage tier content. I genuinely don't understand why they even bother.

  • MichaelLCMichaelLC In what furnace was thy brain? ChicagoRegistered User regular
I've never got their appeal either. Maybe it's a Ryan holdover; will check out some of the older ones.

While the Premium content may not be worth it to me either, I'm happy to consider membership paying for all of it, and that's a good "value" for my bucks.

  • jclastjclast Registered User regular
Because west coast has literally nothing else to make a premium sub worthwhile.

UPF never recovered from Vinny moving, Vinny was the real UPF MVP

  • Lavender GoomsLavender Gooms Tiny Bat Registered User regular
Mostly I view my premium subscription as a tip for all the hours and hours and hours of content they give me. It's nice getting to watch Metal Gear Scanlon or UPF, but mostly I feel like with the amount of entertainment I get from the site as a whole that $35 (I wait for sales) a year is a fantastic deal.

  • BionicPenguinBionicPenguin Registered User regular
I don't even watch most of the videos they put up. Mario Party Party and the Mario Maker stuff are the only things I'll definitely watch when they post them. However, I like having the ad free podcasts as well as access to some of the premium podcasts.

  • TubularLuggageTubularLuggage Registered User regular
It's definitely subjective, but I find that UPF still has its moments. It has become more hit or miss since Vinny moved though. I will say, there always seems to be at least one segment per week that kind of drags.
For me, having access to their archive stuff is a big plus, though obviously the value of that is going to vary from person to person.

  • Undead ScottsmanUndead Scottsman Cybertronian Paranormal Eliminator Registered User regular
    I fucked up.

I subscribed like two years ago, and then got in on their subscription deal only to wind up with nearly two years on my account, so every time it came up again, I was basically "Oh I have plenty of time left"

Really should have grabbed a renewal last time they did one of these.

  • jclastjclast Registered User regular
I'm just coming to grips with that my taste in games seems to differ wildly from theirs. I don't like mobile games, fighting games, or DotA, and I was nowhere near as enamored with Destiny as Brad was. I love the podcast, and I like that I get to see games I'd never play on my own, but I'm not sure at this stage if my taste really aligns with any of theirs.

I definitely prefer the east coast coverage overall, but I still enjoy most of the stuff they put out enough to watch it. I rarely catch UPF since it happens during my commute home and once I'm home I have kids to deal with, but I generally catch all of the east coast stuff live since I can just throw it on another monitor at work and have it going in the background.

Also, if you're like me and have a few of the $15 codes sitting around Rorie will combine them for you, I finally got some shirts a while back because I had stopped so many times due to the high shipping cost and everything and only being able to use one code at a time.

I still watch UPF, but it's not a driving factor for me having a membership. And I've never watched it live. I'll throw it on Monday mornings at work.

I still pay my $5 a month, and have been for years

Podcast alone is worth it, even though I still listen to the version with ads

Power Bombcast is a nice bonus, as are Demo Derbies when they do them

That said, I wish they'd finish up Mario Party Party

  • Raiden333Raiden333 Registered User regular
Really though, with how hit and miss UPF segments have been, the rarity of Demo Derbies, and the close to Metal Gear Scanlon, I will say as a massive GB fan that they need to start an endurance run or some other kind of premium content.

  • TubularLuggageTubularLuggage Registered User regular
I would certainly like to see Demo Derby and/or The Old Game Show become a bit more frequent.

On the East coast, I'm legitimately impressed with how good they've gotten. The dynamic between the three of them honestly reminds me of classic vintage Giant Bomb a lot of the time. Austin is a great addition, and the three of them play off each other really well.

Personally, I absolutely love their Kerbal videos (Project BEAST was great), especially with the way Vinny plays it, though I could definitely see that not appealing to everyone.
It will be interesting to see what their next series is, since I think they're taking a break from Kerbal for a bit.

God Project BEAST was so good. I really want an Austin led feature in something like Crusader Kings. Or a Total War.

Premium content has been a little sparse lately, yeah.

Like, if you look at the Premium videos, there are some weeks where the only premium videos are UPF.

I actually haven't watched any of the Castlevania stuff, though yeah, that seems like it'd be way more entertaining, although the only pre-SOTN Castlevania I like is the one everyone hates

I should check that out one of these nights

VinnyVania's the only premium feature I've been looking forward to these days. I haven't watched UPF in a long time. I enjoyed some of the Kerbal Space Program, but not enough to watch the whole thing.

VinnyVania seems to be an Endurance Run in everything but name.

And I'd love to see Austin do something with Invisible, Inc. Or somebody to really get into Enter the Gungeon. Crusader Kings isn't really my thing (I similarly could not get into Kerbal), but even if it's not something I'll watch, they need more stuff to warrant that $50/year.

East is already doing VinnyVania and Playdates. West will need something to replace MGScanlon, but otherwise that's a solid chunk of content.

I tweeted to him about it a few weeks ago and he said the reason was their office setup.
