Obama made a move on Gun Control

The executive actions are designed to curb violence from a number of different angles. The most important initiative is the administration's attempt at closing the notorious "gun show loophole": a gap in current law that allows guns to be purchased from private vendors at gun shows and online without the purchaser being subjected to a background check.

"It doesn't matter where you conduct your business: from a store, at gun shows or over the internet. If you're in the business of selling firearms, you must get a license and conduct background checks," the White House said in a statement emailed Monday night, outlining the policy.

The executive actions also call for a $500 million investment to improve access to mental health services, as well as changes to bureaucratic rules that impede the ability of the current national background check system to tap into databases that track people who are banned from obtaining firearms for specific mental health reasons.

Moreover, the White House announced additional funding for enforcing gun laws through the the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The FBI will also be overhauling the background check system to make it more efficient and hiring more than 200 new examiners and staff to help manage that process.

Obama was particularly harsh on the gun lobby for devoting extraordinary resources to killing even the most modest reform measures to be considered in Washington in recent years. "The gun lobby might be holding Congress hostage. But they cannot hold America hostage," Obama said.

I'm not a fan of Executive Orders being used for something that could be done through Congress but its becoming very clear how unlikely that is.

"Could be done through congress" is an effectively useless term. Plenty of things could theoretically be done by congress. Practically, very, very little.

Not for lack of trying. The gun interests' lobbying is powerful, and well entrenched in conservative politics.

So Republican logic says that the President needs unilateral authority for drone strikes on foreign nationals and declarations of war, but common sense actions on behalf of the public good are drastic overreaching by the executive branch.

Nah, I doubt this is going to make that much of a difference.

There are polls out there that suggest a vast majority of Americans want tighter gun control regulations, and odds are those that don't are already so hopelessly ensconced in the GOP's power base they've already committed to whoever wins the Republican nomination.

There are polls out there that suggest a vast majority of NRA members want tighter gun control regulations, but since the NRA is first and foremost a PAC for gun manufacturers that portrays itself as being for the average American gun owner, their voices go mostly unheard.
I'm not sure how relevant it is to point out that most of the gun manufacturers are owned in other countries.

They'd ultimately probably get a lot less done in general. A lot of plans have timelines that exceed a single term, so they'd still have to be pretty worried about making sure their successor wouldn't torpedo their outstanding projects.
