It was pointed out elsewhere, the strategy may be that when West tickets sell out in a heartbeat, the website can then go "well there's this other pretty sweet PAX still for sale, why not check it out?"
I mean, it's not like South wasn't packed. But I know the PA staff have been complaining about how people getting tickets for South and Aus way later than for West and East makes it a lot harder to plan.

I am not going to PAX South next year. I only do PAX East. However one question I have is why did they send a tweet out ahead of time as to when PAX South 2017 badges would go on sale? For those like me that go to East, we don't get so much as a day advance notice. They send out a tweet basically saying "PAX East badges are on sale NOW.

That right there mostly. Same line of reasoning is why Aus has pre-reg goodies based on how early you buy.

It's because Texans procrastinate. First PAX South sold out within hours. Second PAX South took 3 and a half days and daily passes were available for quite some time. I've always bought my pass like it was gonna sell out, but I probably have a lot of time to do so on the 17th.

Might want to specify that it was weekend badges that sold out. I know you could buy daily badges into November for the first South - and I want to say you could buy Friday/Sunday at the door.

You indeed could. I think Friday sold out day of but Sunday was available the whole time.
The weekend for the second South also sold out pretty quickly iirc.

Not only that, but Khoo verified that it took 10 minutes to sell as many weekend badges to the second South as it did the first. Hardly procrastination.
Is there a time they usually go on sale? Or is it different every year?
There is no fixed sales time or day of the week. Tickets usually go on sale in the morning, often around 10:00 AM. But it's nothing like a hard rule. Here is the master spreadsheet.

Ok I am CST just was not sure if i Needed to be up at the crack of dawn to get them. But 3day passes took 3.5 days last time to sell out it says, so guess I will be ok.
Thanks

It did take 3.5 days. But in 2012 PAX Prime sold out of All-Days in 7 days. In 2013 it took 20 minutes. I'm not saying that will happen to South this year, but if you want tickets buy them as soon as they go on sale.

That is a little misleading. The only reason Prime took 7 days in 2012 was because the website was not active. It went up on April 25th, but demand was so high that the site crashed and they took it down. 7 days later they put the site back up and sold the remaining tickets. So in total the site was up for less than 24 hours of actual sale time before they sold out.
Since South is still growing the weekend passes will probably last for a little longer than last year. They are steadily growing the event (South has a lot of room to grow into) so there will be more weekend passes available than last year. Also, since single day badges take so long to sell out, they might make even more weekend passes to entice people to buy early.

The difference between West/East and South/Aus is scalpers. The demand for South and Aus hasn't grown high enough to attract them in force yet. Those shows still get packed, but tickets are available through legitimate channels for so much longer that no one feels the need to turn to illegitimate channels.
Contrast with West and East, where tickets would sell out in less than half an hour even if scalpers were taken out of the equation entirely. Current policies for those shows, including keeping the ticket dates unpredictable, are intended to deny any advantage possible to scalpers. These policies have proven pretty successful so far.
If these people knew ahead of time when to set up their mass-purchase scams, they'd become the new de facto primary market. Counterfeiting, fraud, and outright theft related to PAX tickets would all skyrocket. And assuming you get lucky enough to find a scalper who actually has a real ticket for sale, without any other shady bullcrap going on, you'd still see a catastrophic markup.

As someone who dreads having to queue for Lollapalooza tickets every year and take a gamble on getting passes, I much prefer the way PAX handles scalpers.

I don't see them anywhere, but supposedly before they got removed from the Convention Center website, the dates were 27th to 29th of January.
