In a way, the absence of Perkins as a DM this year made me appreciate what he did/does for these Acquisitions PAX appearances even more. He really does operate on another level, and I don't mean just props wise.
Also, good to see the new mutiplayer Doom avatars. Right? No?
I feel like this might be intended as a defense of the character designs but I'd say the joke still works honestly.
I left it without comment because I was curious if anyone would take it the way you did. Mainly I did it just because the comic made me curious about what it was making fun of (I'd never heard of it). Figured it might save some people who were in the same boat some time. In looking at the character designs, my main takeaway was that they were fairly silly. Especially Mr. Guns, whose real name is "Twinblast". Which is actually almost more of a joke name than "Mr. Guns."
This art is way too deformed and I cannot figure out if Gabe was trying to send some kind of message or it's just where his general art direction is taking him.

Names they considered and rejected before settling on "Twinblast":
Paragon Heroes is yet another shooter/Moba hybrid right? I guess I don't understand the joke in the comic. Even with the context of the actual character models photoshopped into the comic, I still don't really get it. "It" being the joke. And the title of the comic.

Pretty sure the joke is that the characters designs in this game blow goats.

That sounds like the name of a clone porn flick.
nah it's actually a custom-designed sex toy that lets you bang a replica of your own butt
Seriously, me too, I don't know why but this is the funniest PA Comic in a while. "Woman" and associated portrait just puts it over the top for me LOL.

This is honestly how I've felt when looking at almost every AAA game the last 10 years plus. There's this certain totally generic aesthetic that has completely death chocked the industry forever now.
This was one of those comics where I had no clue what was going on or what the joke was when I looked at it. So I went to the newspost hoping for context, and it was just three vague sentences before moving on to talking about a Kickstarter. Thankfully, I have you fine people here in this thread to clarify context-less comics to me.

The joke is about a game having terrible art and design. The newspost links to the game website and says the game has terrible art and design.
I'm not sure what further explanation you feel was in order.
One thing I find funny is that the second and third (especially second) frame of the comic has them drawn super-distorted. But if you look at the original model for the Animal Person, the ACTUAL model is really not that different than Mike's drawing. It just looks fucked up in slightly different ways.
Feels like they're saying it's generic as heck, but I don't know what that has to do with opposite day?
Well, 'paragon' usually refers to a model of excellence. So on opposite day, generic character design is, I guess, considered of paramount virtue.
However on another level, it would actually make sense for a touchstone of perfection to be somewhat generic so maybe it's not so opposite-y after all, particularly if you don't agree with the implication that the art design is both generic *and* bad. Or another way to look at it would be that the character design is a Paragon of mediocrity! So the title is somewhat tangential to the joke, not that that is uncommon.
ETA: the title would be more apropos if the game was called "Iconoclast: Heroes"
I honestly can't believe that Twinblasts's thing is simply that he has two guns. Like that's the one interesting thing they could latch onto about his entire design, and they just doubled down on it. His catchphrase is "Go in. Both guns blazing." like wtf
The game's most out there designs are "less fun Rocket Raccoon" and "a chibi Warhammer Orc riding a Zergling" and that's really sad. The two big bruiser aliens look nearly identical except for their faces, which are still kind of boring.
Hilariously, if you watch the hero spotlight video of the less fun Rocket character, all you get to see while playing as him is the back of his big power armor suit, so he might as well just be another generic space marine dude.
Let's not overlook Paragon's other unforgettable characters, such as Archer Woman, Tech Geek Girl, Space Marine, Skintight suit Ninja, Grim Reaper, Giant Reptile Man and Giant Reptile Man with bonehammers.
My gosh. The Colossus lookalike is named Steel. And the evil (perhaps one-winged?) angel is named Sevarog.
It's in your head now...dun da dun da dun da dun da SEVAROG!
From what I've played of Paragon, it's pretty fun, but I'll agree the character design (and the whole game art in general) is generic as shit, and with stuff like Overwatch out there, this simply isn't acceptable.

yeah in a post-Overwatch world these half assed designs won't cut it. They are stuck in the 90s.
Let's not overlook Paragon's other unforgettable characters, such as Archer Woman, Tech Geek Girl, Space Marine, Skintight suit Ninja, Grim Reaper, Giant Reptile Man and Giant Reptile Man with bonehammers.
So are there people out there who are actually interested in this game? I get this feeling that between Overwatch and Battleborn, both of which have way more style points and personality than this game appears to have that it is gonna get buried and be the forgotten "third game."
In 5 years we'll be saying things like "Remember when Overwatch and Battleborn came out and it was a good time for shooters? Oh and wasn't there another game too? Hmm. Yeah I think there was but I don't remember what it was now."
Let's not overlook Paragon's other unforgettable characters, such as Archer Woman, Tech Geek Girl, Space Marine, Skintight suit Ninja, Grim Reaper, Giant Reptile Man and Giant Reptile Man with bonehammers.
Oh jesus, the Tech Geek Girl is called "Gadget".
Is she also a mouse? That might be acceptable then.

Jerry is almost always reticent about calling something terrible. Usually, he questions whether it's his own fault for not liking something. That's one of his prime personality traits. For him, saying "it’s also possible there’s nothing there to get" is about as damning as you'll get.
But if you look at the strip and think Mike isn't using the language of comics to say their art and design are terrible... well, I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Yeah if you watch them in First 15, if Mike doesn't like something's art, he'll straight-up say it with no pulled punches. And this here looks like how one artist tells another that they don't think much of their work.
