I left it without comment because I was curious if anyone would take it the way you did. Mainly I did it just because the comic made me curious about what it was making fun of (I'd never heard of it). Figured it might save some people who were in the same boat some time. In looking at the character designs, my main takeaway was that they were fairly silly. Especially Mr. Guns, whose real name is "Twinblast". Which is actually almost more of a joke name than "Mr. Guns."

Pretty sure the joke is that the characters designs in this game blow goats.

The joke is about a game having terrible art and design. The newspost links to the game website and says the game has terrible art and design.
I'm not sure what further explanation you feel was in order.

Well, 'paragon' usually refers to a model of excellence. So on opposite day, generic character design is, I guess, considered of paramount virtue.
However on another level, it would actually make sense for a touchstone of perfection to be somewhat generic so maybe it's not so opposite-y after all, particularly if you don't agree with the implication that the art design is both generic *and* bad. Or another way to look at it would be that the character design is a Paragon of mediocrity! So the title is somewhat tangential to the joke, not that that is uncommon.
ETA: the title would be more apropos if the game was called "Iconoclast: Heroes"
The game's most out there designs are "less fun Rocket Raccoon" and "a chibi Warhammer Orc riding a Zergling" and that's really sad. The two big bruiser aliens look nearly identical except for their faces, which are still kind of boring.
Hilariously, if you watch the hero spotlight video of the less fun Rocket character, all you get to see while playing as him is the back of his big power armor suit, so he might as well just be another generic space marine dude.
That would be way too original.
My gosh. The Colossus lookalike is named Steel. And the evil (perhaps one-winged?) angel is named Sevarog.

In 5 years we'll be saying things like "Remember when Overwatch and Battleborn came out and it was a good time for shooters? Oh and wasn't there another game too? Hmm. Yeah I think there was but I don't remember what it was now."
Is she also a mouse? That might be acceptable then.
Jerry is almost always reticent about calling something terrible. Usually, he questions whether it's his own fault for not liking something. That's one of his prime personality traits. For him, saying "it’s also possible there’s nothing there to get" is about as damning as you'll get.
But if you look at the strip and think Mike isn't using the language of comics to say their art and design are terrible... well, I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.
Yeah if you watch them in First 15, if Mike doesn't like something's art, he'll straight-up say it with no pulled punches. And this here looks like how one artist tells another that they don't think much of their work.
