yeah I might very well be dumping my 970 for the 1070 or 80 the performance jump is just rediculous

...anybody want to buy a 970 in a few months?

life's a game that you're bound to lose / like using a hammer to pound in screws

do you like ultrawides or more traditional 16:10/16:9 stuff

Traditional works for me, I've got a 1680*1050 that I plan to keep as a second monitor, so I'm not looking to go wacky huge with it.

There is a complex and bizarre business model that seems to print money for us, which is great.

We haven't really tested scalability yet though, but we are very rapidly moving towards a massive increase in tickets and when that happens... who knows? Still not 100% sure how many people we will need to hire yet.

I wonder what it's like to play the generally accepted most evil character on TV. It's Ramsay Bolton, btw.

Not looking for arguments about more evil characters, just accept that people think that after some voting.

I mean I wonder what it's like to be that actor just walking around.

from the one video i saw of him, he seems super cute and affable so I'm sure the 'OMG EVIL RAMSAY' thing is totally dispersed the second someone meets him

I really hope this iterative model of xbox is BS cause really that is just the worst as far as consoles go.

It's going to happen to both the playstation and xbox lines, and you know it.

The iteration will play all the same games, slightly better.

Then the next iteration better still.

Then the next iteration will be able to play games the original xbox one cannot, but it will play all prior games, and its games can be played on the past two iterations of hardware.

Thus there will be a perpetual 6 year console life cycle, that you can upgrade mid-generation at any time to get prettier shinies.

Joffery was well written as a love-to-hate character. Every time he was on screen you were just waiting for him to get his. I could see this translating into IRL.

Ramsey is just bland. Every time he's on screen you just want the scene to end.

actually just going to copy-paste my blog again because don't feel like re-writing for this audience; names edited out
@D.: Oh! I'd like to become a cyborg; the avatar I use on my other website is a character who is like half metal and enthused about some future he envisions in which cyborgs are the dominant human subgroup. I don't really get S.'s particular enthusiasm with chip implants, because I don't actually see how they provide any benefit or contribute to becoming a cyborg, although she's satisfied with them similarly to how I'm satisfied with my industrial piercing, I'd say.

The appeal of being a cyborg, in a future (probably not our lifetime although not sure) in which you can actually do so in a useful way, can be broken down into:

    1. it's cool. It's very cool.

    2. it serves an actual function--either replacement of degenerated/injured body parts (insulin pump, hearing aid, prosthetic limb are current examples, but could go well beyond that)--or enhancement/replacement of existing capacities (infrared vision, optional embedded HUD with AR information, cyberdicks (lol but also good for gender dysphoria))

    3. it taps into a sort of vision of human transcendence, where you can maybe rise above the mandates of your weak and insufficient body through the power of ingenuity (not necessarily your own ingenuity, but someone's)

    4. body control/body mod--gives you more options over your self-expression/presentation

    5. possibly leads to a desireable end goal of longer life when all of your parts are robot parts.

Maybe S feels like by getting chips implanted she's tapping into some of this; who knows; to me the word cyborg implies something more extensive and the appeal I think should be clear as per the above.

ugh what a nerd hahahahaha oh well it's not like we didn't know this

I volunteer to be replaced by a robot

    my body, at least

Oh fuck yeah I'm signing up for a robot body. Even if it means I work for Samsung for all eternity.

A couple of days ago I had to write a blog post explaining why it would be great to be a cyborg because one of my alumni community members had mentioned that she just couldn't see the appeal

    smh

Recently I came across this article: https://aeon.co/essays/your-brain-does-not-process-information-and-it-is-not-a-computer

The argument is kind of basic and ehh but I thought it was an interesting take

hmm hm yes faulty analogy complicated brain hm yes yes

But wouldn't it be sweet to have a rocket arm

Don't worry, you will be able to get a rocket arm in your lifetime.

    pew pew pew

Ah I always accidentally conflate cyborg with brain-upload stuff, I guess because as our society moved from industrial to post-industrial we started favoring intellectual boosts instead of physical boosts

But in order to have a rocket arm that's not manually/externally activated wouldn't it have to hook up precisely with nerves in some manner? I'm sure that's possible given all the artificial arms and such

Thus there will be a perpetual 6 year console life cycle, that you can upgrade mid-generation at any time to get prettier shinies.

not really all that different than the old way of a new console coming out that's backwards compat

or the older way of a new console coming out and just obsoleting the old one

as long as the time frame is reasonably long (6 years is fine that's like PC obsolete time frame ya?) im ok with it

actually now that I think about it

if synds thing is basically replacing tier 1 style helpdesk

well it basically only needs to do better than the shit you farm out of india, which is only like 75% success rate anyway even with humans

It is currently being used to execute everything from basic dumb "move someone's desk" nonsense to lift and ship data center migrations.

    So it's pretty versatile.

edit: that said, the latter jobs require a lot more human touchpoints, and while the managed service fees deffo let us make money, the bread and butter are dumb work execution, vendor escorts, etc.

    right but like

it's figuring out which tier 2 to assign these requests to, ya?

"oh I think this is a move, give it to Facilities"

"data center stuff give it to Lab Ops"

"they wrote 'computer is slow' give it to Desktop those poor poor fuckers"

Without diving too deep into the business model here, which is every bit as valuable as the software IP (if not moreso), the goal is for there not to be departments filled with field services dudes/dudettes at the serviced company, so no we would not send it down to Lab Ops or facilities.

    aight

    I guess I don't get it then

    a computer algo can't move a desk

if you're just contracting out tier 2 then tbh I think that's kind of shitty; that level of work is soul sucking. Not working for the company you work for is the worstworstworst thing

And no we aren't building a 1099 army (yet), nor are we having algorithms move desks or boxes.

There is a complex and bizarre business model that seems to print money for us, which is great.

We haven't really tested scalability yet though, but we are very rapidly moving towards a massive increase in tickets and when that happens... who knows? Still not 100% sure how many people we will need to hire yet.

If it is less than 10, I'll probably be on a boat next year.

so who is moving the desks, then?

There is definitely still way too much passive use of the brains = computers concept in cogsci. That's part of why we get 'trained neural networks' that 'can understand' a thing that are actually just horribly stupid algorithms no one bothered to look at closely.
