My computer is old and freezes when I die and jump to another fighter.

This leaves me plenty of time to study the heavy turret of the fridge that just killed me and made me realize I should try to gap to their underbellies.

I should also target carrier engines before bombing.

And when challenge mode gives me three carriers, tuck my head between my legs and kiss my ass goodbye.

Visually it reminds me favourably of the funkier bits of Freelancer.

'Course, any spess game that features fields of spess rocks to slalom through does that. But this one is particularly pretty.

Oooh, the Void Destroyer dev sent out an email with a new trailer for Void Destroyer 2 since it's going into early access soon, and also a video showing off some of the features for those that aren't familiar with the first game and another explaining some of the flight controls (because the games are complex with a lot of stuff going on)

While not a stick and throttle simulation, Sol Trader is a pretty cool space trader simulation. The simulation focus here is on characters and relationships. At start the game generates two centuries of characters, relationships and history on a solar system scale. Making and working contacts is a huge part of this game and there is a robust dynamic conversation battle system to support this. It's a bit clunky and obtuse but surprisingly compelling once you grok it. Especially since information about people and places is a big commodity in this game.

The space side is pretty bare right now, the developer has plans to expand it though. That part of the game plays like Asteroids for the most part. All travel can be completely automated so if you find it tedious you can just click buttons to make your ship fly where it needs to go.

Well, it's a space sim in that you're commanding from the bridge of one of the ships under your command. Genre hybrid, sure, but I'd say it counts!

In Space Sim news, Startighter Inc. got successfully funded on its latest crowdfunding attempt.

Also the latest Everspace update finally added working cockpit screens which is super nice.

There wasn't a whole lot there, but it basically sounded like X3 with some stuff from Rebirth in there too like it's art style, the busyness of space around the stations, highways (though there will also be gates and bigger, more empty areas of space), walking around stations and ships, etc. You'll be able to fly any ship like in previous X games, and they'll supposedly each have unique cockpits. You can teleport yourself onto any ship you own, and then take control of the ship from the pilot, and when you're done the pilot will sit back down in the pilot's seat (which I thought was kind of a neat touch). Not much else that I could see in the video, but I skipped around a lot so I could have missed something. It's still very much an early version and it looked really rough currently, but I think it might have potential.

So this is a new thing that just hit Steam Early Access. Fly ships, build a fleet, run a business.

    Stolen from their presskit:
Helium Rain is a single-player space sim that places you at the helm of a spacefaring company. Exploration, trading, station-building, piracy are all options. Helium Rain relies on both spaceflight and strategy gameplay, mixed together in a creative way. Destroying a freighter has a direct impact on the economy, while declaring war will make your environment more hostile.

This looks like it's going for a very corporate/blue collar take on space, a bit more The Expanse rather than Star Wars. It doesn't even seem like there is any kind of alien stuff of any sort at all. Super refreshing! It also boasts an Eve-like economy, where everything is tied together in a dance of resourcing, production and market driven economics. So grab those space-bootstraps and prep battlestations, we all know that the right of way goes to the biggest gun in this sort set up. Secure your rights to free trade the traditional way; superior firepower!

Maybe this is a pipe dream, but are there any good Freelancer-esque games that are more recent than Freelancer? Fly around, ally with factions, trade stuff, run missions, shoot stuff, etc? Haven't played Elite in a long time but I could buy Horizons if it's made improvements.

Rebel Galaxy is worth it just for the soundtrack alone. It's a damn fun game too but yeah, damn. Dat music.

The RG devs are also up to something not yet announced but they did provide a bit of a teaser:

Helium Rain looks rad but I've had enough issues with Early Access games to want to wait and see what happens with it.

It's enough to make an old pilot cry.

It took me a second to realize that I'm crying* for the same reason as you. While it's nothing short of astonishing visually (even before considering the subtle improvements the sequel will have), that first video's beginning with you leisurely cruising up to the bow of a star destroyer and nothing else is happening is a perfect reminder: it's not TIE Fighter. It's not even Rogue Squadron. It's the flying vehicles from Battlefield 4 or Battlefield 1 that people jump into do a few loops in while shooting, and slam into the ground to kill someone. And we can't even blame the players entirely for that either.

It's not as though TIE Fighter was some sort of hard-core space combat simulation even when it came out. It really wasn't. Point your ship in a direction, fire a bunch of lasers or warheads, and then do a few minutes of energy management. But that's still an entirely different experience than we'll be getting here.

*If I were the kind of person to cry over anything. Apparently I'm not.

Because literally the casuals. And Star Citizen having unlimited budget and also tanking utterly on its feature creep and promises.

I can't watch most people even play action sims, as their only tactic seems to be, "point cockpit at target, accelerate and never stop, crash and or miss constantly, die."

I'm not sim elitist either, but at least I try the basics of energy management, strafing runs, split-s and actual loops.
