i dont.. i don't think my back actually hurts. i think its just my piriformis right now. this would be... very good. we'll see. it will probably hurt tomorrow. as long as it does SOMETHING discrete
Think of back shots like Congress.
Sometimes they work and wonderful things happen.
Most of the time it simply does nothing or makes shit worse.
There isn't really an obvious, discrete endpoint in running a business. You're putting out a content driven game so it never really 'ends'. Leaving things unfinished, habitually, is a thing that is regarded as bad for reasons that I don't think really apply to this pursuit.

But I did promise people a lot of things that never came.

Well be careful with promises in the future I suppose. Outside of potential legal woes, I don't think there is anything wrong with walking away from something like this.
Sorry if that sounds callous, it's not intended as such. I'm sorry things are going poorly at the moment for you.
I love how Geralt has so much more patience for like trolls and spirits than for 95% of the people he deals with

Yeah, it's not like you just got bored with this and wandered off, outside circumstances beyond your control would be why the project ends.
That being said, I think Kednik's right that it wouldn't hurt to consult a lawyer, even if you don't plan to go to court.

Is it "totally justifiable" to walk away from a crowd funded project without finishing it after, you know, you've taken a whole lot of people's money? I am unsure what the murky morality surrounding expectations, promises and intentions are when it comes to Patreon.

Is it not if someone is threatening legal action against me to stop it, with potentially legitimate grounds?

Patreon is more about supporting people and groups as they continue to create content, rather than the Kickstarter idea of supporting a specific product. If they stop producing, you stop supporting.

If circumstances make it impossible for the thing to continue, then you can't continue, but it seemed like you were talking about walking away rather than trying to find a way forward.

Yeah, you're right. I should make sure that he actually has solid ground to sue before giving up on it.

Then I guess it comes down to reasonable expectations of backers vs promises made vs motivation to continue vs what has actually been delivered vs difficulty of continuing.
I dunno. If you want to stop, then stop, explain why you're stopping to whomever and don't look back. The blowback is whatever it is.

His options are to try and negotiate with the artist; press ahead and deal with any legal challenge; or let it go. I think the hassle of legal challenges makes letting it go a viable option
I'm not advocating Winky do one thing or the other, just that from what I understand of the situation any option is reasonable

Yep, get a lawyer to look over the contract before you decide one way or the other.
I will leave my potato chip flavour choice in the hands of fellow war criminal, Henry Kissinger
it does mean that the next time you try to crowdfund something people are going to look at the last thing you crowdfunded and be like "lol"
you have to very clearly explain to people what you fucked up (e.g. the contract) and why it won't happen again (you understand contracts better now, you'll hire a better contract writer guy next time, etc.)

Or I'm just never going to crowdfund anything again.
My project just got fucked massively by my artist walking and tearing the entire team down with him, and he even wants me to tear all his art out of the game (it would literally gut the entire game, and for no reason except spite, he's just completely salting the Earth), threatening legal action, which he does have some justification for because of the wording of the contract we had (that contract may be one of the single worst decisions I ever made).
The thing is, this puts me in the position that if I want to just take my money and walk away right now I'd be totally justified.
I could just try to call his bluff (I doubt he'd actually go through with a suit), but then I still have to rebuild my team from scratch. It's doable, but difficult, and I'm having to consider if I'm just fed up with this or not. The option to walk is right there.
Do I just walk away? I have enough saved to live for a while. But if I do that's just one more thing I leave unfinished...
shiiiiiiii
Winky I thought you did the lawyer thing before doing contracts
In any case it's definitely lawyer time now.

oh hey, new page of [Chat]. Yeah what they said.
your game is available to your backers now, right? if you stop they'll still have the exe, or whatever? idk. maybe this sounds callus of me, and i can't pretend to know the extent of your promises to patrons. but my understanding of the platform suggests that at any given time you're at parity with the people supporting you.
i guess if this is like, the slicing point from one month to the next- that is, a bunch of people donated this month and you promised x y z things in an update coming next week- then try and finish the immediate promises? but like, 'one day there will be multiplayer and shareable profiles' or whatever doesn't seem like a promise you need to deliver on for a pay-as-you-go support network, where there isn't a mass payment up front.
I seem to get lots of nuvaring commercials on Hulu.
Mainly I've learned that nuvaring has some serious side effects.
You'd think I'd stop staring in disbelief with a bit of a smile on my face at the endless stream of prescription medication commercials that Hulu feeds throws at me
But I don't
Apparently a person trying to explain potentially horrific side effects will never stop being both disturbing and amusing
