That was a funny episode. Easily top five funniest episode. I kind of get the sense:
The Steven Universe team liked the VA for Smokey Quartz enough to want to get a chance to work with her again in a more extended sequence. And I don't mind, cause she's pretty great.
Also Garnet's tiny scream at seeing Smokey Quartz is the bessssssssst.

I'm really glad they brought Smoky Quartz back for this, because I like them about a billion times better than I did the first time. They were trying to hard to be "on" all the time in the Jasper fight, I think.

I didn't understand that exchange, so I went to the interwebs for an answer. Turns out, Rebecca Sugar has said in interviews that Garnet doesn't ask questions. Ever. (I guess she took Rose's advice in The Answer to heart.)
So her answer was a meta joke. She can't ask them, because it would be breaking character to do so.
