So, a job I didn't think about much apparently wants me to come in for a psych exam, which means I'm near the top of the heap.
It's for a 911 dispatcher.
I have a lot comms experience, first-aid (I know how to give you an emergency tracheotemy, un-collapse your lung with a knife and a butterfly valve, and other good stuff!), and I'm fairly familiar with law enforcement lingo. The pay is pretty decent, it's a really short commute, and there's a lot of paid overtime (2.5 times pay on holidays, 1.5 on weekends).
It seems odd that I got a degree that's p much useless without 10 years of experience for an entry-level position. I kind of regret it sometimes because it's absolutely impossible to even get in the door anywhere for $12 an hour without an expert-level capability in TSQL, C+, odd systems that you can't get training on anywhere, Oracle, or the complete Cisco networking certification path.
So, fuck it. I'm gonna help people out doing what I have experience in.

Word of warning as my mother was an emergency dispatcher for a few years. It can be rough, hence the psych exam. I applaud you wanting to help people but there definitely some hard stuff you may have to deal with.

It is a rough ass job btw. Lots of psych blow back listening to people at their lowest moments, in the worse circumstances, and more terrified states.
But at the same time you do a lot of good.
Yeah, I've heard there's a bit of depression from it. Possible PTSD as well.
It's a small town of ~20k people, which means I'd be doing more than simply 911 dispatching. Basically the towns communication specialist for emergency weather situations, annoucements, etc, on top of the 911 stuff.
The one thing I derived satisfaction from in the military was doing a job that would help someone, whether it be a packing list of common items nobody was thinking about for the earthquake mission in Haiti, training people to survive if they deployed to Afghanistan, or something. Something with meaning beyond just surviving.
I can take stress, pressure, and horrible shit. I've been living with that for decades. What I can't take is the feeling of withering away doing useless shit.
Even the UNL job presented opportunities. They were doing research on the systems they use and developing custom solutions and contributing to IEEE whitepapers to advance the state-of-the-art. That's a small thing, but it's a thing where the world is just that much different than it was yesterday.

I leave for a music festival tonight; spending the evening with bae in Columbus and heading onsite in the morning. Going to enjoy some fire spinning, dancing, managing workshop presenters and co-leading a workshop about cuddling. Getting paid a little over $300 for something I'd like to have done anyway, too!
From the festival, back to bae's to spend Sunday night, home Monday, work Tuesday-Wednesday and then back out the door for a regional burn. Our camp this year has yoga classes, workshops on kissing and rope bondage, an open mic, 3 live music acts, and a handful of DJs. I'm camping with bae and my partner from Indy will be a next-door neighbor. It will be the first time the two of them will have hung out.
So, I'm pretty gosh darn excited about the next two weeks!
this morning i thought that they had decided to just not run the bus for one of the scheduled times and i was ready to give up on the day
but it was just late and well i've given up on the day already
Hrm. Moving next week but during weekdays. Apparently my paid time off accrues throughout the year so although I should have 10 or so days off, right now I only have 1. Was hoping to take off two days next week to move. Wonder if there's some leeway there with moving around how often I accrue stuff. Seems weird they don't just give it to you.

Having a sense of purpose and accomplishment is so outside of my mindset for work.
I'm 2nd gen corporate stooge like my mother before me.
It's really cool to me that some folks strive for the opposite.

No the accrue method is the most normal.
Usually though they let you use it and you just go over the accrued amount and your next set of accrual will just wipe out the negative.
Because my boss the other day was like "hey you should just pick up programming work for salesforce that this other guy used to do" and I was like "hey you should give me an additional 100k a year because lolno thats not my job". I was training years ago to get certified as admin(you know, programming) for our instance before we decided it was worthless and got rid of it. apparently another corner of the company kept it....
I could learn it if I wanted to, but that is silly.

I've never liked the accruing of time system. Especially since I tend to like days off earlier in the year. I guess it's a deterrent to high turnover. But it seems like a rip off to me.

Huh, first time I've seen it at a job like this. Good to know though! I emailed the HR person so hopefully they'll confirm.
edit: Ha, awesome they confirmed and it is exactly like you said Mazzyx. Thanks!

My mom was a nurse and did stuff like hospice for a non-profit working with HIV patients during the pre-treatment era when no one else did. My did started his time as a dentist with public health. Did private practice for years and now is in public health working mostly with underserved populations.
My Uncle was the head of parole for St. Louis county for years. Lots of cousins do health or public service jobs or are like researchers and professors.
When I think about it, a lot of my family was pointed at helping folks in some way or another.

When getting drunk is seen as a pastime, where you live is not that exciting.
No wonder I got into video games.
Where I am at it seems like winery, bar, or church. And winery is just a fancy bar. Yeesh.
i wouldn't do it for money, LOL.
just for attention.

I think @Irond Will's brother is a dispatcher.

But at the same time you do a lot of good.
I don't care what the point is... I want to have accomplished something at the end of the day aside from simply surviving my shift.

Woman cuts through bullshit like piss through snow
This I get.
I got luck and do work that feels almost non-profit/help people focused at time but I get paid.
Though the government bureaucracy can make me want to strangle someone from time to time.

I literally just laughed at the office manager and tell her she better figure out a way to write me a bigger check then and walked away.
What are my chances this blows up in my face?

tell them to submit your requests through the patient portal
but turn off their access first.
