Konbanwa!
Have you ever found yourself wondering, "What if
The Real World had conversations about feelings instead of fistfights?"
Wait, no, come back!
So, Terrace House is a Japanese reality show, available on Netflix. Three men and three women live in a house, pursuing their dreams (and romance). This is a show that is patient, and gentle, and deeply rewarding, and
nice. When is the last time you watched a show that was just
nice? Everybody genuinely wants the best for everyone else, and people are kind to one another, and goddammit the world is a mess and a nice television show is a fuckin' panacea right about now.
The action is commented upon at regular intervals by a panel of hosts, who are frequently insightful and regularly hilarious. They riff on the stories and characters, dish on their favorite 'ships, and pitch their own bizarro theories on secret pasts and hidden plots - it's like getting a big gang of your funny friends together to watch a reality show, but it's built into the show itself. It's incredibly well done, and adds a whole lot to the enterprise.
If you further want to be sold on the show, Griffin and Rachel McElroy
have an episode of their podcast, Rose Buddies, where they gush about the show's myriad charms.
Now onto our (initial) cast!
Mizuki Shida
Out of all these nice guys and gals, she's the nicest. She has every single person's back, even when she probably shouldn't, and is supportive and cool and the best. Mizuki 4 lyfe.
Minori Nakada
Aspiring model, terminally awkward, nice nice gal.
Tatsuya Uchihara
Hair stylist, and a tough nut to crack. Initially seems like a bit of a jerk, but the secret is, he is staggeringly self-conscious and inexperienced. Deep down, he's a nice nice boy. I have never been so torn between wishing well of someone and wanting to throttle them for their self-sabotage. Watching this dude is like watching a horror movie, sometimes. "Don't go in there! Don't do that! Oh my god,
what are you doing?"
Yuuki Adachi
Occasionally overbearing about the realism of folks' dreams, which is weird because he's a professional tap dancer in the year of our lord 2016. But he's still a nice nice boy and I wish he'd catch a friggin' break.
Yuuriko Hayata
She's fine, I guess? Kinda oblivious, and a bit of a dork, but harmless enough.
Makoto Hasegawa
This dude's a chump of the lowest order. He sucks on wheels.
Let's talk Terrace House! The cast ends up being kind of fluid, so make sure you use some spoilers to tag what part of the show you're on - it's 46 episodes long, so there's a lot of room for shit to go down, and a lot of the fun in the show is seeing how the dynamic in the house shifts and evolves.
Terrace House! It's very good!

In a reality show? Strip Search.
It really does, and it really is. The closest people get to shit talking is, "Huh, they're not applying themselves as much as I wish they would."
Oh, and if you want to see some fuckin' sumptuous food shots, and see some beautiful shots of hip joints in Tokyo, boy does Terrace House deliver. Like every episode there's a new place that makes we wanna hop on a plane and peep that shit for myself.
You were the chosen one, man
Who needs other shows when you've got Terrace House
Lucky for you like every show is going into mid season break right now.
But they're going out and it's like "why don't we go out for fried meat" "yeah I could go for some fried meat"
This is true... I think Timeless has one episode left.
It was grilled, but yeah, that tickled me. "Oh, you two went out for grilled meat, right? How was the grilled meat?"
Yup, Survivor and Timeless end next week which is exactly why the wife and I are starting this show the following week.

I've been watching this all morning, and the twists and turns are so goood.
Also Makoto you had one job dude!
To paraphrase Achewood, the dude fucks up with an intensity and focus normally reserved for successes
I really love what the panel segments contribute to the show

Man, there were five or six times there where I was positive he'd bunged everything up irreparably. What a roller coaster ride that was.
But he also calls out some of these dudes and I'm absolutely with him like half the time

When he sincerely wishes for a walrus to appear and make an "outrageous noise" during the most romantic moment of a date, I knew I was in forever-love with him
Uchi seems okay
And yes now I can tell Makoto is, at best, a big ol' idiot
He certainly seems the type
