God dammit. Chris Cornell dead at 52...

Love or hate his music Chris Cornell was a hell of a singer. I fucking love Soundgarden and while Audioslave never quite lived up to the hype I still really enjoy a lot of their songs

Temple of the Dog was amazing though.

This really fucking sucks. They don't know what happened other than it being "sudden and unexpected"

The 90's were my teenage years, and grunge was the soundtrack to my discovery of personal musical identity. Soundgarden, more than any other were the band that carried me through my difficult teenage years, and Chris Cornell phenomenal vocals were an indelible part of that experience. I only had a chance to catch him live once, several years later, with Audioslave, but his note-perfect renditions of those powerful vocal melodies was astounding. I've been to many concerts and seen many performers over the decades, but that Chris Cornell performance is the standard I hold all vocal performances to. He belted out song after song, never wavering from those incredible sonics, pitch perfect, through an entire concert, at the end of a long tour. It was, simply, breathtaking.

I feel his loss more than I might have suspected; perhaps more because of its unexpected suddenness.

Despite being born at the start of the 80s, I missed the boat on grunge. I'd heard 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' and 'Evenflow' like everyone else in earshot of a radio, but I'd never really gotten into it.

Cut to 1996. My cousin and I had rented a PS1 from Blockbuster, and one of the games we rented for the weekend was Road Rash.

    https://youtu.be/gBdlScU7N6M

The riff clicked first, but god help me the scream during the chorus set my brain on fire. The tragedy for me was 'Rusty Cage' wasn't getting much radio play by that time and my music-fu was profoundly weak, so it took me years until I got the Internet and figured out just who that was that blew my teenage mind those years back. Until I got Internet access, I'd always thought of Soundgarden as the 'Black Hole Sun' guys, and though I liked that song it never occurred to me that they did that amazing song from that game I played nonstop for one weekend.

Cornell's voice is goddamn legendary. For my money, there's no better rock and roll scream than his.

Cobain. Weiland. Staley. Cornell. We're running tragically short on legit grunge singers.

He was my favorite. Superunknown was the first CD I ever owned and I still have it to this day.

I saw Audioslave in concert once, and the main thing I remember was the drummer being up on a raised platform, facing away from us, but with a bunch of mirrors along the back of the stage, so he could still see the crowd and we could still see him.

At once point between songs, Cornell stopped to point out the backwards mirror set up, and admitted that they just did it because they thought it would be weird to do.

I could never get into Soundgarden or Audioslave

    BUT

He did easily the best James Bond theme and I will always fight that fight

a local alternative rock station once did a bumper to promote an increase in the variety of the music they played, and the conceit of it was them apologizing for playing black hole sun too often

I saw Soundgarden, on a whim, in 1994. I only knew a song or two and holy shit, I was not prepared. One of the best concerts I have ever had the privilege to attend.

It's not fair, I know he had more music in him.

If you have Spotify you can listen to Songbook which is a live acoustic show from 2011.

It's incredible and listening to him do Thank You from Zeppelin is breaking me down right now.

Is that the one where he sang the stripped down, bluesy Billy Jean cover?

    Because that's an incredible cover.

Let's appreciate the whole of his work

Soundgarden and Temple of the Dog were excellent, Audioslave was pretty good

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pcWbnQDMD0

But I have gotten so much joy out of how awful that album he did with Timbaland was, it is my favorite thing

It makes me so happy whenever I remember it, which is the best you can hope for with a severe career misstep

We'll never know but what happened between 8:30pm when he tweeted about how great the show was and 6:30am when he was found?

Everytime a celebrity I love dies from suicide it scares the shit out of me because I've been there and I want to believe that I'll never go back.

    dammit dammit DAMMIT.

Chris Cornell was probably one of my favorite frontmen. he had vocals like no one else. i remember when he struggled with smoking and was trying to quit because it was going to eventually take out his amazing voice. i clearly remember being inspired specifically by that. i also tried (unsuccessfully) to impress a girl by trying sing like him.

no one can sing like him. no one ever will. damn.
