This one new volunteer is feeling ill and for some reason keeps specifically coming to me about it. Which... I'm off this week but I can't afford to leave base, so while I have sympathy for her feeling bad I wish she would talk to literally any other member of staff. The worse part is that she keeps getting really teary and upset and aaagh I am not a counsellor, why do I keep having to deal with a crying sick person when I'm off.
I realise this makes me sound super callous but volunteers asking you shit when you're off is a big work/life problem for us and why I always leave base if I can afford it.

Not actually being off work when you are off work sucks. Doesn't make you callous, just makes you a human that needs r&r to recharge.
Any chance of redirecting them to someone who can help them out better than you can and therefore do both of you a favor?
I had to turn down a decent job offer this week. It would have provided a modest pay raise and an opportunity to not have to travel anymore, but the person who would have been my manager forgot our first scheduled appointment for a phone interview and then ducked out of the second appointment at literally the last minute (email sent at 3:59 for a 4:00 appointment). It hurts to be picky when the job market is so bad but there's no way I could work for someone who is either that disorganized or that careless.
Yeah like, there's nothing wrong with supercuts if money is tight but if you can afford even a little better you're going to get much better results. My barber haircut and shave was 11 bucks.
students texting their teachers is a bizarro concept to me
I dunno. My sixth grade teacher gave me her phone number realized I was in a shitty time at home. Seems like a good way to be available for help while not requiring a physical presence.
Maybe it's because mobile phones were only just becoming a thing when I was finishing school so it is something I never would have encountered. But I'm just surprised that kind of outside-school contact is considered appropriate.
They’re probably using a messaging app like Remind or the message feature on Edmodo, but “texting” is a simpler way to say it. Also, i’m Always more lenient with communication when I have seniors, personal email addresses and such as necessary kind of thing.

11 bucks is cheaper than a supercuts haircut, in my area at least.

For a good haircut and beard trim its $25ish around here, and comes with a free beer, so that helps. I was going to get a flat top but the guy who specialized in them has left, so I'm looking up hairstyles right now.
I have a mildly scraggly goatee like tubby guys grow to cover the tubby. Now all I can think of is that I want it to smell like chocolate oranges. Would that be overkill?

Like teachers really should not give out personal phone numbers for students to text or call. Schools want that stuff done in a professional setting specifically because stuff like that can and has gone super bad for people involved.
Teachers are usually encouraged to make professional facebook or twitter accounts or the like for use with that and in most schools students have a school email they can also use.

I don't work at a school, obviously, but we sometimes deal with minors and a lot of our other bases around the world specifically focus on kids, and the company policy about things like that is really clear. No minor can ever have our personal contact details or connect with us on social media, and any email exchange must have at least one other adult CC'd in. Any private messaging is considered the same as being alone in a room with a child which is a total nope.

To be clear, Remind and Edmodo are both specifically created for school use. I’d be really surprised if the teacher wasn’t using Remind but rather than explain to a sub what that is just said “texting.” Most of the teachers in our district use Remind for messaging more than email. Remind always works; our district level anything, including access to O365? Not as reliable. Haha

From my personal experience working in and around high schools is that teachers will give their personal phone number to a few seniors they trust who are managers/supervisors of whatever extracurricular the teacher runs (FBLA, FFA, ect...).
Is that sketchy? Oh yeah, but it definitely happens.
Oh yeah, I’ve encountered that a few times, particulalry with like the head cheerleader or the math team captain or the president of 4-H. Of course in my schools many of the teachers know the students and family personally outside of school already (members of the same church, etc), so that makes it easier to blur the line.
I think the best thing about getting randomly contacted by recruiters is when they tell you which company they're hiring for, and then seeing them get slammed on Glassdoor
When you see they've got 2.5 stars and reviews titled " 'Soulcrushing' Is Somehow An Understatement," you know you're in for a ride.
Edit: Okay yeah I have to directly quote from this one because holy shit
PROS:
I’ve noticed that most people have written ‘free bagels’ here when reviewing Spin Master which I’ve always thought is a lot like responding ‘lots of fresh air’ when asked to describe the pros of being sent to the Eastern Front or ‘free books’ when asked to describe a life sentence in prison. But yes if you’d like to ignore the fact that the average bagel contains up to 350 calories and 60 grams of carbs and will most likely contribute to serious fat gain then yes, ‘yay’ to free bagels.
Do people ever give good reviews on Glassdoor though?
It seems like the kinda place where most people only go there to give a review if they have a negative experience
Like I just looked up some glassdoor reviews of my employer and they seemed kinda exaggerated. I mean, I don't know that reviewer's personal experience so maybe I'm wrong here.
Problem with just walking into a barber shop sight unseen and trying your luck is that it'll be a lot more expensive of a trash fire than supercuts if they mess it up. With supercuts you can at least rationalize it away by saying 'well it was a $20 haircut, what else should I have expected?' (Speaking as a man with a then-short hairstyle)
I got lucky with mine at least, thinking back on it. The guy I had when I went did a good job salvaging, and every other time i've gone back and had other people it's been good as well.
When reading reviews of things by random people I pretty much always focus on the highly negative ones anyways. The 5 stars tend to be fairly generic or easily satisfied people and it doesn't tell you much. The super negative people though will tend to be the ones who will tell you in specific detail about what's fucked up about the place/game/whatever. And sometimes I think their complaints are stupid, but I still feel a lot more educated.

My library system has less than 10 reviews, but is a 4.8. 8-)
I found a beard oil that smells like spruce, which I'm fine with. Forest smells are nice in general and I grew up around the tree type and appreciate it.

My principle called my cell phone yesterday to thank me for my help on a really bad situation we had yesterday. My point is that he somehow has my cell phone number. I think I have to change numbers now.

I'm paying $35, but again, rarely. And he's been cutting my hair most of my life except during my attempts to escape my home town, so I don't really mind. $25 and beer would get my attention in anticipation of my guy retiring, though.

The only reason I had to do it was the lady at supercuts decided "evening out my sideburns" meant "shave down an inch into my beard from the top of my ear"
I almost screamed.
I was growing my hair long for a little while but it was starting to become unkempt around the ends as hair does (I guess?). Went to supercuts, asked for about a 1 inch trim to clean it up. I have no idea what she did but it basically halved the length and put it in some weird-ass configuration with how the length differed area to area and I don't even remember. It was godawful though.
Went to the barber shop a few blocks away after that and got the Brad Shoemaker to work as a clean slate. Too much work to keep that up though and I just grew it long again before ending up where I am now with the Joe Miller. I won't ever go back to supercuts though. For anything more complicated than "inch and a half long on top, clippers on the sides" they are garbage.
I once asked for a #3 on the side and a #5 on the top with a fade/blend
she took out her scissors
I said "whoa whoa whoa, that's not the clipper"
"it'll look better" which is usually true when it's not super cuts but the last time I trusted them with scissors I ended up with some weird ass version of a bowl cut instead of a fucking crew cut.
Dude, you said you pay 20 bucks for these haircuts? You can get a barber for like, 30.
