My point was that buffing TAGs in ITS is not a problem for either Haqq or Ariadna because they're both extremely good in ITS.

    Fair enough.

I'm pretty happy with the change just in relation to the health of the game. Not many people run TAGs at all, which is why CB are giving these little incremental buffs to try and get them out of their current doldrums. They're big, expensive targets that are fairly easy to kill. For their cost linked teams tend to do the same job better. More wounds on the table, easier to get cover, more individual weapons for different targets, more provided orders for fuel - either them or others.

However, TAGs are a part of the game. A cool part. Giant stompy robots are awesome. So to see them not taken favour of linked teams more often than not kills a bit of my interest. Adding specialist pilots was one fix. It solves one of the problems - linked teams often have a specialist, even multiple. Letting the pilot pop out to push a button brings TAGs back up a bit.

Another problem is simply firepower. TAGs have an MHMG/HMG/Spitfire/etc but they're the same as what is on infantry (except the MHMG). And for a similar price a Link team will have a HMG/Spitfire, plus a ML/HRL/SR/MSR, plus a few rifles and/or shotguns. That's fine, leaving Links with many more weapon options, but TAG firepower needed a boost in a different way. Fatality L1 makes their guns stronger, more likely to cause a failed ARM roll.

We'll see how it turns out, but I'm pretty happy with it. Might not go all the way to bringing them up with some of the more hardcore Links, but anything that gets stompy robots on the table more is fine with me.

And also have limited anti tag options... Getting into a slugfest with one just became even scarier.

Ariadna is a faction awash in AP HMGs, has Tank Hunters and 5 different varieties of werewolf that can rip apart a TAG in close combat, not to mention 6 point Galweigens who can Berzerk and crit on a 12+ and then go dogged and do it again after the TAG punches them back.

Ariadna is in no way suffering from a lack of ways to kill TAGs.

Haqqislam has 5 point dogged Ghazi with E/Marat and Jammers.

It doesn't benefit Haqq and Ariadna because they're the factions that have the least trouble with dealing with TAGs.

Played my first real game in ages tonight. Taskmaster got a bit of a workout. Secured a HVT and took out an Al-Fahsed a Taureg and a Hunzakut. Tied for MVP with the Spektr who found a vector and went on a backfield rampage gutting the order pool. I've missed this.

So between getting a bunch of cash for my birthday and a timely discount code / revamped website for Miniature Scenery I may have just ordered 1.5Kg of MDF.

Bandua also has really nice pre-painted terrain. But they're not in the US, sadly.

We don't have a lot of good Infinity terrain makers over here. Warsenal would be the top, then we've got others that do a little like Black Maria Designs and Death Ray Designs. And a few more that maybe still do but have largely gone dark.

Muse on Minis are based in Iowa and seem to do some nice pre-painted stuff (they've appeared on Ash's recent Guerilla Miniature Game infinity videos).

Antenocitis Workshop seem to have reasonable shipping costs, unless I'm missing a trick here.

To clarify though: Having terrain that is both finicky to maneuver through and simultaneously open is not a 100% bad thing.

It's just important to realize when you put it on the board that (unless those stairs let you hop onto more useful buildings) the area they're in is likely dead terrain that no one will go on. Outside of setting up a prone sniper with height advantage.

We have a giant ass heli pad that does pretty much the same thing on our board.

I use their stuff exclusively for Malifaux. It's fantastic. Might not stand up to close scrutiny with some gaps at joins or uncoloured areas showing through, but it looks great when the table is full. I'd recommend trying to find a stockist in the US, it's great stuff.

Doesn't hurt at all! Only sectorial armies can use them so if you're playing a general faction list you can't and they're just as capable and potent as a sectorial list!

I imagine you may run into some availability issues with regards to reliable special/heavy weapons...I think the lower AVA of such units is meant to be offset by link teams and increased BS/burst with them. That being said I'm a noob who's never played with/against links (or any sectorial) and has little knowledge of the Yu Jing/JSA lists. Seems like it'd be playable for sure, at the least.

I frequently run generic Haqqislam against sectorials with Links. Generic lists do fine against sectorials. Sectorials are great at turning regular grunts into badasses via Links, but generic lists have wider access to badasses that don't need Links to get there. And regardless of if you have a link or not, dealing with a Link is the same for generic or sectorial - pie slicing so you're only facing one model at a time, preferably with a template weapon so you can catch more than one Link member if you beat their ARO. Smashing a Link at another Link hurts the active Link more than the reactive Link.

I grabbed Beyond Red Veil last night. After a few months of building Wyrds jigsaw puzzle plastics, a 3 piece Fiday was a pleasant surprise. I really like the new Tarik so I'm going to have to buy another normal Tarik to swap the AP Rifle back to have both profiles.

Also a friend plays PanO and will have the ABH from Beyond Icestorm, so we're swapping LE models. I like the ABH, but I'm not interested in the CSU, and he wants to start NCA so he can use the CSU. Yay for having more people in the group to swap stuff with.

Played a 200 point game last night against a buddy who's still learning, using his Yu Jing. For the 3rd game in a row I basically tabled him. He's a good sport and isn't all worked up about it, but I'm worried about the disparity in our relative experience levels and our actual lists.

I tried to take a less ruthlessly optimized list (wanted to try the Katyusha with some FO's) but the Vet Kazak and Spetsnaz HMG were still too much for him. He had some misplays for sure -- he's still learning how to position guys against the inevitable Spetsnaz, reading telegraphed camo marker plays, etc. Most importantly he's still learning to put it all together with things like smoke and when to play aggressive with ARO's vs. dodge.

I'd like to help him tweak his list a bit, but Yu Jing is a mess for me trying to read. His list has staples of 4 Zhanshi's, Celestial Guard with 3 Kuang Shi's, and a doctor. His big guns are the Hsien HMG, Bao sniper, and Bao boarding shotgun/contender. I think he likes the idea of the Kuang Shi's being remote detonated or exploding on death, but they don't strike me as easy to play as a beginner, nor very good at 200 points without a lot of supporting units/orders.

Are there any must-haves that he should add into his list at 200 points? I told him to consider adding the tiger soldier or the ninja back in from RV (he has both RV and RV:B) just to have some disruption and better midfield/frontline presence. We're still proxying so things are pretty flexible...my thinking is that if he shaves off the Kuang Shi experiment and a Zhanshi he should have ~40 points to bring something fun. If the list isn't the problem, then we can just keep at it.

I may need to tone down my list and (gulp) leave the Spets at home...the problem is that being Ariadna most of my other options are going to be some kind of sneaky and I'd rather he have a dire threat that he knows than drop parachutists or Van Zants or just oodles of other camo nasties on him.

  • admanbadmanb the bored genie Seattle, WARegistered User regular
Infinity is a pretty brutal game to learn. Rather than dumbing down your list I would probably lean on the teaching element of the game, both during and after.

I rarely see Kuang Shi outside of the ISS link team, where they're mainly used for order fuel and the B2 Smoke GL. 200pts is a rough level to be taking a bunch of non-busted irregular impetuous models.

Fair enough. I'm surprised at how good of a sport he's been, and last game he definitely got a bit better, eliminating my werewolf on turn 1 and eventually killing the Spets. Towards the end of the game we started calling out our thought processes (as part of teaching) and we focused on him trying to secure (or contest) objective zones despite obviously being outmanned.

I'll probably go back to the Yu Jing episode of Mayacast and see what they get excited about in terms of units and try to help him fashion another list.

Infinity is a game where you lose very suddenly and it feels like bullshit based off of dice rolls.

That's not what actually happens but, because the game is about area control and weird rules/timings interactions a lot of the time it's very hard to grasp when you're learning.

  • Redcoat-13Redcoat-13 Registered User regular
I don't know what you're doing already but I don't know if it is worth pointing out what kind of reactions your friend's troops will cause if they do something.

Perhaps they aren't aware of a troop hidden in a building or what kind of negative modifiers they might face, that kind of thing.

I'd stick using the same kind of troops if only because if your friend is new, he won't have to learn a whole bunch of new rules / interactions if you changed your army list.

Maybe hekp him set hus army up at the start with tips you've learned? Make sure things are facing the right way, cover fire lanes, etc...

  • mr_michmr_mich Registered User regular
Yep, we've been doing all of those things...at some point it becomes me just quarterbacking so there have been a few lessons he's learned the hard way. I also know it's a lot to try and absorb/retain at once, so some things are just going to take a few games to really sink in. He's played a lot of other games, and has been fantastic about remembering actual rules/mods/maths but tactically seems to struggle putting it all together.

I've been jumping in occasionally with some tips and teaching points. "You may not want to deploy there, if someone gets up to this roof you're screwed" or "Let me show you the wiki page for this rule we've never used, Cautious Movement, which is perfect for your situation." It usually just ends up with him losing his big gribblies and then desperately running around his cheerleaders. I could lay off the gribblies, but that basically seems like letting him win and not really learning much.

I'm going to help him tweak the list and optimize a bit...with some extra lessons learned we'll see if those things combine to a fairer fight next time.

Iguana operator comes with the Iguana in the same box. Gecko pilot is a single blister. Iguana operator is essentially a pilot, but is ejected when the TAG hits 0 STR and IIRC can't voluntarily dismount. You can't just take the Iguana operator, you take the Iguana and he's inside it.

The reason pilots are separate models is they never were really something you used. There were pilot profiles, and they could dismount, but there was never a reason to do it. You got the pilot if the TAG was killed and reduced exactly to 0 STR, but otherwise the pilot profile was all you ever saw of the pilots.

That changed last ITS season when they gave all pilots new profiles with some kind of specialist skill and in most cases a different weapon. This gave you a reason to dismount - the TAG get to an objective while the pilot dismounted, pushed a button, and got back in. If the TAG is reduced to 0 STR, you get a specialist in return. Since pilots became something you actually wanted to use represented by a model, they made pilot models.

TAGs with Operators always had the operator model with them (IIRC the only other model is the Anaconda), this is because Operators eject automatically with the TAGs main gun and keep on going. They're an integral part of how a TAG with an Operator functions and so were built in to the points cost. Because they were more important than pilots, they got models packed in.

Got the pilot at my LGS. They still have no Tsyklon Sputniks so I ordered that off Amazon. My friend is finally buying his stuff so we are probably gonna be putting everything together and playing in the next two or so weeks.

My friend also managed to talk another friend into joining us which is really surprising because this friend will absolutely refuse to buy pretty much anything besides MTG cards. He wants to buy the Red Veil starter but is only really interested in the Haqqislam in that starter. He is also interesed in the Ariadna and the Morats. Trying to convince him to not buy a two person starter without someone else being interested in the other army but I am having trouble.

Infinity is a hard game to diagnose without full lists, scenarios and tables. Your friends list sounds a little on the poor side (Too many cheerleaders and big guns, not enough utility), but really it's hard to tell. What were your full lists? What scenario did you play? What did you table look like?

Ariadna can be quite hard to deal with in general as they have some powerful active pieces like the Spetznatz and the dogs and can be hard to attack because so many models live as markers.

That said your friend has a bunch of MSV2s, which area a great tool. Remember he can discover+Shoot as discover is a move action. Also direct template weapons and smoke can be great. He could throw some monks up the table to put pressure on you or just use the Celestial Guard to lay down some smoke then fire through that.

We're going to play tomorrow, I gave him a link to the Yu Jing intro thread on the official forums and also gave him a few ideas of where to improve.

I also bought some of these on a lark with some extra Amazon credit.

They arrived and are basically what I expected. They're 3d printed, so they're not super detailed or high quality. There's some minor striations from the 3d printing, but I was hoping to find some cheapish scatter terrain and these guys make a few other things. This is my first time working with 3d printed terrain, and I can tell you that holy shit is this plastic thirsty. I don't think I'd do bigger buildings and stuff, unless you wanted to spend a lot of time sanding, but I actually kinda dig the texture for scatter terrain because it doesn't all end up perfectly smooth.

The problem with the official boards is it's gotten to the point where people have a kind of '40k' attitude to things. X units are absolutely rubbish and never worth fielding and Y units are the second coming.

The thing is, no units in the game are that good or that bad. 'Bad' units tend to be situational rather than generally good, and 'good' units tend to be generally good rather than situational. So people will think the situationally good unit is bad because they're simply using it wrong.

A good example is infiltrating snipers and HMGs. The general consensus if you ask there is that Infiltrating units are only worthwhile with short ranged weapons or specialist abilities. Snipers and HMGs are to be put on the back line to take advantage of range bands.

Except the game isn't played in one direction. An infiltrating sniper or HMG on a flank can fire horizontally to hit models on the other flank, in their good range band, likely from behind so there's no ARO. This doesn't mean everyone's playstyle will suit an infiltrating long range weapon, but they're not outright bad like you'll hear over there.

Yes but again I'm talking about pumping a new player full as of much information as you can as quickly as possible. Yes, he'll get over-binary views of what is and isn't good, but at this stage of his development "take infiltrating specialists with shotguns" is only going to help him.

You can expand to "everything is good" once he has some idea of how to win a game of Infinity.
