I’ve been so many times for various things in recent years
I think the elbow, from what I gather online, is a pretty common injury - I’ve been doing the rehab exercises, but everything pretty much says 4-6 weeks healing time anyway. It’s slowly getting better
It’s more frustration with constantly hurting different things, and then losing my momentum (I could clearly work out around my elbow and do other exercise, at least cardio)
What I want to know about gyms is that if 70% of the members are lifting weights then why is 80% of the gym treadmills and elepticals? So these gyms get bulk discounts?
Mainly because they attract new membership, i.e. the "I want to look good for summer/lose weight for the holidays" crowd. Christmas for personal trainers.
At the gym I used to work at, I was told to specifically mention the number of cardio machines as a selling point so people wouldn't worry about wait times.
I started doing some cardio more regularly about a month ago.
The duration of my sessions have slowly been ratcheting up and I am now at about two and a half episodes of Dragonball.

Oh hey, I was half-heartedly poking around for this thread.
I'm having some struggles, fitness friends. I'm two years into my four-year (theoretical) Singapore assignment, and regularly attending yoga classes hasn't gotten any easier. Which is incredibly frustrating because 1) I genuinely love and miss my practice, and 2) although I haven't gained or lost weight, I know 100% that I have lost muscle, particularly in my arms and core.
The challenges:
No studios nearby to my home that offer evening classes, or nearby to my office that offer daytime classes.
Doggo at home waiting for me, so I can't be gone from my place for 12-14 hours a day three or four days a week without being a real shitty dog owner
Taking a two-hour lunch to work out a couple of times a week would probably be acceptable if I started coming in to the office earlier on those days, but it's not something I can reliably count on being ABLE to do even if I plan on it, due to the responsibilities/vagaries of my job
I'm going to try to set up a system with my friends where I can drop Haechi off a couple of evenings in the week so he's not alone while I work out, but it's just been the devil trying to balance work and every day life needs with classes in this damn city.

I'm having a bit of a cheat weekend it turns out, because I got a nasty cold and didn't initially realize that Nyquil has corn syrup in it.
Still felt terrible last night so splurged a bit on some pizza. Still, overall since I started keto I've lost maybe 15 pounds in water weight and about 3 pounds of, presumably, fat.
Back in the saddle as soon as this damn cold goes away.

Is home practice a possibility?
I say this as a person who has never been able to get a consistent home practice going, but theoretically it's possible

Recumbent bikes are a fucking godsend and I don't know why I don't see them more often.
I honestly think it's just because they're different
also people who recumbent-bike IRL always look incredibly smug, which they probably have some right to look considering how natural the posture is, but still
in any case I look forward to looking at porn whilst recumbent bicycling

Yeah, I tried home practice when I first moved here and just found that with my somewhat odd interior space in my apartment, and my dog up in my business the whole time, it was almost pointless. I'd get distracted and I never ended a session feeling like I had gotten a workout.
Today was another failure - I am just tired of feeling exhausted and gross and I miss exercising. Sorry to be in this thread without any real concrete ask in terms of what I can do. I feel frustrated and hopeless because no matter how many times I try to set up a routine here, it fails, and I haven't had this problem before.

The reduced visibility (to and from you) scares me away from recumbent bikes. Also standard bikes are way more maneuverable.
In all fairness, car drivers are probably just as likely to murder you on a normal bike. I swear some of the folks driving around here have it in for my friends.

I feel like a big ol' jerk taking to the sidewalks for part of my commute, but I do it anyway and just go slow and give pedestrians the right of way, because the rush hour drivers on the particular surface roads I'd need to take otherwise are like extras from Mad Max

After a couple month hiatus I've started back on the fitness train. Calorie counting on MFP and rowing on the Concept2 in my basement. If anyone is a rower and wanted a virtual training partner PM me and I'll share my logbook deets. Heck if we get enough we can form a team for their semi-annual team challenges.

Today was nice. I've been back at my yoga studio a couple of times a week for the last couple of weeks, and today the instructor asked if I had ever done teacher training and complimented my practice, which is bananas since two years ago I was working on free handstands and right now I can't even do revolved bird of paradise anymore. But still nice.
Now to not let it backslide again. Goal is being back on four sessions a week by the end of the year.

Hmmm seems my IT Band has some thoughts on my current exercise regimen... it seems none too happy i tell ya whut.
Stretching seems to be helping so I'm probably just super tight and need to get to RICE asap but its a pretty annoying bit of pain.
Ughhhhh I had an IT band issue that bothered me for close to 6 months. Couldn't do anything more strenuous than a brisk stroll without it acting up. :bro:
so, a little over a month ago, I was at the dentist, and they randomly took my blood pressure, which apparently was a bit high. So I make a doc appointment at a new place, since we just moved to this town 2 years ago. Takes blood, etc. Turns out, not only do I have elevated BP, but my "bad" cholesterol is off the chart. Apparently heart issues run in the family (thanks, mom). Doc, puts me on statins, and says get more exercise (he didn't think diet was the main cause of ldl issues...me:male, 40s)
Flash forward to today. Been riding a stationary bike 3-5 times a week, ate a bit better, cut out beers. I'm down 15 lbs (to a svelte 208). But I feel I need to do more. General consensus says start some strength training/body weight stuff. Trouble is, I've got a craptacular shoulder (already had a rotator cuff and labrum repair) so push ups are not gonna happen.
Anyone have any suggestions on some beginner programs? *prefer something I can do at home, as trying to find time to get to a gym, is not really feasible, as soccer season starts soon (i'm my son's travel coach) I already get up at 5:00 to take care of household stuff before heading to work)

thanks!
I'd check with a physiotherapist. With those surgeries I wouldn't want to recommend most strength training. If you have good range of motion squats would probably be do-able. You can certainly do cardio though, and things like sled pulls and stair steppers and things like that.
Ask the physio about getting on some shoulder exercises too. I assume you had some physical therapy after your surgery? I wouldn't give up on training the arms or shoulders completely, rather find more appropriate exercises and machines if you have to. Even 5lbs weights are going to help you keep mobility and muscle mass in an important area.
I say this because a lot of the 60-70 year olds who pass through rehab are totally deconditioned in those areas, and being able to lift things is, you know, important.
the shoulder repair was 2 years ago, i can lift things with it, its just that the strength that was there prior, isn't there now. But, being able to scratch your back without wincing made it worthwhile
I worked with a patient, 40s, who was a pretty fit guy who worked on an Alaskan fishing boat. And he was rehabbing from double labrum tears. His range of motion was okay, but the sheer physical effort to get some strength back in the shoulders was pretty inspiring. Its not fun.

walking is a great exercise for reducing BP and cholesterol. They key is doing it daily and keeping a good pace for a set duration 30+ minutes. Don't fall into the trap that a lot of people do with their "oh but I'm on my feet all day at work, that's like exercise." No it's not the same.
Stationary bike is good but you miss out on the impact/spinal compression and core muscles

As in, setting the bar for myself literally as low as I can think of.
Not sure what to do since it's still somewhat irritated.
work around it i guess, don't be like me and let an injury stop you from doing anything (see: now)
though back injuries are tough and going to a physical therapist was necessary for me for that

Being old and creaky and sad is dumb
especially since it'll start cooling down by outside then.

What's the goal you're working towards? In terms of actual stretching this may help:
