[Star Wars]: The Last Jedi - A completely uncontroversial film. TAG SPOILERS
ShadowenSnores in the morningLoserdomRegistered Userregular
It is a period of civil porgs. Disney merchships, striking from a hidden theme park, have unleashed their ultimate weapon, the PORG MERCH, inexpressibly cute little pieces of shit with the power to make ALL OF THE MONEY.
Battling against their own ingrained consumerism and the inherent adorability of the little shits, a group of Star Wars fans have declared their Resistance with the battle cry, 'HARUMPH.'
Most people seem ready to make altars to the FUCKING THINGS, though. I mean, I guess they are pretty sweet...
A couple previews for The Last Jedi have been released. How quaint! Here's the teaser:

crazy rambling about the trailer
Think it's showing Kylo hitting the eject button on the whole evil thing. He's gonna be on team good guy by the end credits. Going scene by scene
- he's checking out some First Order factory that seems to be the location of a big action scene later...
- he has somehow reacquired his helmet. He left this behind after murdering Han, meaning either some unlucky Stormtrooper had to go into the burning building on a collapsing planet to retrieve it, or they made a new one for him. He wears this helmet while ceremoniously accepting a replacement lightsaber, presumably from Snoke.
- we then see him alone, a couple shots that appear to be in sequence of him alone, removing the helmet and looking at it, then smashing his fist through a wall. A shot in the teaser trailer featured Kylo's helmet crushed to pieces, with shattered glass all around it. This is that part, he destroys something core to his persona that someone went to a lot of effort to retrieve or replace. The voice over for this scene is "let the past die. Kill it, if you have to."
- The helmet has gotta be reminding him of his confrontation with Han, who demanded he take it off when he faced him, and then he lost it moments later. It should be a symbol of what he 'achieved' by killing him, except rather than filling him with pride he's feeling ashamed of what he did. He can't wear that helmet anymore.
- We see him flying his own lil' custom TIE (with no helmet, but I guess they are pressurized nowadays...) and there's a real cool shot of him leaning into a barrel roll, and it just keeeeeps going. This is interesting, cause it looks like it starts out as a tactical thing to dodge some incoming fire, but then he just doesn't let off the control and leans into a crazy death spiral. This is a not so subtle visual metaphor for how Ren must be feeling right now.
- He seems to disable Leia's flagship and has a lock on the bridge. He can go two for two and murder both his parents. She can sense him out there, he knows she's right there... I think this is it, his turning point. Ren is gonna spare Leia, and spend the rest of the movie in fear of Snoke learning what he did. If Leia dies here, it won't be by Ren's hand, and that might be the thing to push him back to the light.
- Finn vs Phasma is in the same factory that Ren was in at the start. I think if Ren defects, it'll be in Finn's custody, and the shot of him offering his hand might be to Finn. It might make sense to him, to ask the defector Stormtrooper to take him in, y'know?
- With Rey apparently being caught by Snoke at some point, I think this movie might end with her captured but Ren switching sides. No idea what happens to Luke in all this.
Anyway. That's my thoughts. Ren's story in the trailer is him feeling less secure than ever in his evil ways, and its showing him turning back toward the light. Or he just smashes the helmet in one of his tantrums and doesn't get another because he's on time out. ;P

Thoughts on Luke from the trailer
We haven’t seen anything to indicate if he’s leaving Ach-To, have we?
Kylo thoughts
He might leave the FO by the end of the movie, but I think he’d be on his own, or at least not with the Resistance.

I know I said I was going to avoid this thread for a while... but has anyone else been reading From A Certain Point of View? It's pretty good overall (as far as I've gotten, at least). Griffin McElroy's story is really cute, and Claudia Gray's story about Qui-Gon's ghost talking to Obi-Wan offered a really cool look into what it's like to part of the living Force.
Some of the other stories, including Griffin's to an extent, are a little too pat in how these side characters have some subtle influence on how the events of the film play out. It toes the line of what a lot of previous EU had problems with, i.e. everything has a backstory and nothing is as simple as what's presented on screen. But for the most part, having all these authors offer their takes is cool. I'm excited to keep reading.

Then again there are stories like "An Incident Report" that are just a delight.

So not reading any posts as I'm on blackout, but I wanted to pop in to say that my 2.5 year old daughter saw the big $20 talking Porg at Target today. She was across the hall when she exclaimed "it's so CUTE!" then ran over to it. Her next statement was "awww, he's so adorable!"
I did not buy it simply because my wife had just picked up plush Bingo and Rolly dolls from Puppy Dog Pals for her yesterday.
But I'll totally get one and hide it til Christmas.

OK, "Born in the Storm" was very good
I like how the middle of the collection just gives you all these other perspectives on one single scene from A New Hope. The way the stories intertwine is really cool.

Duty Roster is one of my favorites so far.
I never thought about the rebel pilots who didn't get a fighter for the big mission, or who got bumped from their ship so some moisture farmer from Tatooine who happened to save the princess could fly.

Thing I just realized about Piett from RotJ.
"Sir, we've lost our bridge deflector shields!"
Piett didn't order an evacuation of the bridge. He didn't try to make some snake-like exit to preserve his own life. That guy stood his ground, gave an order, and went back to observing the battle. Usually Imperial officers were sniveling cowards in the face of death (or Vader) but Piett grew a spine between ESB and ROTJ.

Being promoted after your boss obviously and openly murders the former holder of the position is a strong motivator.

I get the joke, but I can see Disney setting something up like this for the 9th title.
