If you're using a modern browser on a PC and not mobile, middle click opens it in a new tab. If you're on mobile, click and hold, and most of them give you the option to open in a new tab.
It's not native forum behavior but it's what I use.

This is what power users do, and its a great solution that supports both workflows. While its possible to do what you asked, its custom work and we don't recommend it.

Ctrl-left click, as well.
I'm using middle click already. Sometimes I forget and it throws me off. Literally every other web forum I visit (including this one before we switched to vanilla) opens external links in a new window/tab. I was just curious if that could be easily implemented in the new forums.
