Well, I use Konversation, but unless you plan on installing Linux, that won't really work for you. Try Xchat or mIRC

Xchat with the dark theme goes perfectly with my XP Zune theme and the Abstract Zune theme for firefox and the dark theme for trillian. (Can you sense the theme?)

Is it common for campus networks to block the ports required for IRC? I've seen some mention of it floating around on the Internet, and I can't seem to connect from campus. It works fine at home.

Yes. IRC is getting obscure enough that the bulk of its usage on campuses is either botnets or for warez, neither of which a campus likely wants to deal with.

Try using an ssl connection or ports outside the 6660-6669 range.

Servers and their available ports can be found here: http://www.slashnet.org/servers/

IRC can be a huge bandwidth hog. Back in the old days before torrents came out (like 4 years ago) IRC was a pretty reliable location for getting most anything. In fact, it is still a good place to get things. It is a direct peer to peer protocol, one to one transfer.

So that is probably why some universities block it.

Indeed, many schools block common IRC ports because of the prevalence of filesharing type channels.

For instance, I use it to get old comics from the 60-70s that are impossible to buy in paper form.

Slight tangential topic, but DC++ is also a good place to get comics.

Indeedily do, I use that as well. But it's more difficult as my router is absolutely terrible and randomly closes ports that are necessary for DC++ to work properly.

That is indeed unfortunate. DC++ is one of the most finicky peer to peer file transfer programs ever.

Um, nobody devoiced you. Heels isnt in channel so the auto voice script isnt working. We have to voice everyone manually for the time being.

you know, the spammer hasn't been back in a while, we could probably afford to -m the channel, but keep heels's script active in case +m is necessary again

moe, you do realize that the channel being +m along with an autovoice script means all a spammer has to do is rejoin the channel after you devoice him, which is pretty much exactly the same as kicking them

if you actually want it to be effective you should have people register with nickserv so you can set up access levels so chanserv can autovoice them after they authenticate

Actually we have it set up so that if a person is devoiced, they don't get autovoiced when they rejoin

There's also the problem of what happens when a new, legitimate user enters the channel. You have no way to know they're not a troll, and it still takes op oversight to add them to the list of auto-voiced people. It'd be even -more- unwieldy than what is available now.

So... The Channel will be running with moderation on, anybody else who joins will need to register their nick and PM either me or moe to be added to the channel access list so you get auto-voiced so you can talk in the channel.
Whenever I am in the channel ill be proactive for a while at PMing new people and walking them through the register process, for now heres some short instructions.

    Instructions:

Go to the server window (depends what client you use) and type this:
    /msg nickserv register password email

password = what password to register your nick under
email = your email addy to recieve a confirmation #

it will then ask you to do this:
    /msg nickserv auth code

code = the code you got in your email

Then when you rejoin you will need to type this
    /msg nickserv identify password

password = the password you used to register your nick with

Then you are all set :) Just be sure to PM me or moe on irc (whichever you see active) to get added to the access list.
Or you can post in here asking to be added, we will check here too :)

in mirc, at the top left there should be a little folder with hammer icon, click that.
Fill out the info on the first screen (name/email... but they dont have to be legit, and put your nick down).

On the left under servers, select slashnet under "irc nework". click add.
    click ok
then hit the lightning bolt looking symbol on the top left

    type /join #paforums_pax

that should be it. Theres a lot more fancy stuff that you can do with preform and such to auto join a channel and auto auth your nick.
I might write a tutorial on all that tomorrow... WITH PICTURES!
