So the Arctic is on fire

And the wildfire in Siberia is dried peat and is basically emitting as much carbon in a few days as Sweden does per year

    So positive feedback loop....

Oh, good, Siberia. So it's probably also clearing ground cover that was preventing even more permafrost from thawing and belching methane into the atmosphere?

Yes that is a thing that folks are speculating could happen

Peat is basically pure, dense carbon and thus basically impossible to stop from burning. The fire is following along a river and I’m not sure how close it is to the permafrost zones containing the methane....

    Hrm, earthquake in Athens (Greece)
    https://www.reuters.com/article/us-quake-greece/quake-hits-northwest-of-greek-capital-athens-witnesses-idUSKCN1UE1CB
Most of the girlfriend's family and a lot of friends live there so that what quite a scare for us. Sor far everybody seems to be fine though.

With ca. 3,8 to 5 million people about a third to half of the greek population lives in the Athens agglomeration.

It's been ten days and the Arctic is still on fire.

    So that's a thing that's still happening.

Not a fan of the number of tornadoe warnings happening here in Massachusetts. That's not normal.

Baring some weather event acting on it once you catch peat on fire its going to stay lit for a long time.

Doesn’t peat emit tons of methane too?

This seems like kind of an issue: https://www.cnn.com/2019/08/21/americas/amazon-rainforest-fire-intl-hnk-trnd/index.html
Fires are raging at a record rate in Brazil's Amazon rainforest, and scientists warn that it could strike a devastating blow to the fight against climate change.

The fires are burning at the highest rate since the country's space research center, the National Institute for Space Research (known by the abbreviation INPE), began tracking them in 2013, the center said Tuesday.

There have been 72,843 fires in Brazil this year, with more than half in the Amazon region, INPE said. That's more than an 80% increase compared with the same period last year.

So the arctic is on fire, and the equator is on fire. That seems less than ideal.

Thing about the Amazon forest fire is it is man-made and now running out of control.

Not quite natural disaster but I can see why it would be posted here.

The power's going out every minute or two and it sounds like a hurricane outside.

This UPS was the best purchase I made in the past year.

Tropical Storm Dorian is about to hit Puerto Rico and then head into the very warm waters of the Bahamas before running straight at Florida. Yesterday this was forecasted to hit Florida as 75mph cat 1 hurricane, now it's predicted to be a 100mph cat 2. I would not be surprised if it gets even stronger.

Makes me glad I got all the remaining trees out of the Encmire this spring. Water is already getting run on in local grocery stores.

Monday we had a sign up telling people that we weren't going to sell water by the pallet and it was a twenty case maximum.

It might brush the DR too, right? The family and I were just there last week. Very happy we chose last week and not this week for our vacation.

On my side of I-4 folks are. I'm hoping I can pick up enough beer and chips to ride out the storm in comfort.

uuuuugh, do not waaaaaant :( .

Hurricanes are scary, and made all the more scary by my mom freaking out during them...
On the bright side, at least I live in a sturdier place than I did last year. My Mom lives with me now, so her freaking out will still be anxiety inducing, but y'know, still.

Also, I'm worried about PR. (Apparently Trump is mocking the island on his twitter again. NEAT.)

Hey man what else is trump supposed to do? He already talked about nuking a hurricane and people were like "That really won't help" and people were so ungrateful after he gave them $20 in bounty roles after the last hurricane!

They're projecting cat three by landfall now. The two big models are still arguing on a Northeast Florida or Central Florida hit.

It's wild how last night this was a meh storm fir Florida that was really just going to be a rainmaker and windy. Now it's a serious threat after it jogged northeast last night and dodged PR.

We’ve got friends living in USVI...they have lost power, but things seem ok.

What is the relative size of Dorian compared to Maria? I remember Maria being huge, to the point where it basically enveloped the entire state.

  • a5ehrena5ehren AtlantaRegistered User regular
    edited August 2019
Dorian is pretty small at the moment. I'd expect it to get a little larger as it strengthens and heads north, but not that much.

The big problem showing up on long-range models right now is that it might just get to the coast and sit there for 2-3 days.

  • EncEnc A Fool with Compassion Pronouns: He, Him, HisRegistered User regular

At least PR isn't getting hit. The sad thing is we have what, almost two more full hurricane seasons with the idiot chief at the helm, so plenty of chances for him to create himself another Katrina that can't be hand waved away because idiots don't believe it's part of the US. Given how things are going climate wise, I'm not at all optimistic that we luck out avoid having a major hurricane hit a heavily urbanized areas that is woefully prepared to deal with such a storm. ><
