Just saw They Shall Not Grow Old. It looked a bit cheap at parts. Expensive and well made for a WW1 showcase, but I was hoping for billion dollar special effects and some of them fall a bit short. But I will love to see some kind of special edition that has side by side images of the original and the "restoration" because the "restored" footage is so good that you forget the original footage is likely 10 frames a second and jerky.

I appreciated the variety of soldiers' viewpoints, from positive to negative and everything inbetween.

Considering that WW1 footage is likely not that common, they did a wonderful job creating a film that has fairly smooth storytelling. It's not a historical film, they generally don't focus on particular places or dates but talk about the war in general. Which I think was done to side step the issue of footage coming from all sorts of places. I'm sure they would have explicitly focused on the Somme in particular if they had the footage for it but instead they show footage from a variety of sources while talking about (but not naming) the battle of the Somme.

    There's no after credits stinger.

Full theatre, which is rare where I live, but then again it is Armistice Day.

OH! I see the confusion here, there were actually a couple of Terminator movies that came out in the 80s and 90s, Salvation and Genysys aren't the only ones.

They're pretty old now though so probably not worth watching, I bet the graphics suck

Just finished reading the screenplay for The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. Coen brothers scripts are always a delight to read, but the anthology structure really worked on the page. I loved it, but it’s fucking bleak. I’m pretty sure it comes out Friday on Netflix, and I can’t wait.

On paper, it feels like upper tier Coen bros.

I was looking for something to watch on my new IPad, and iTunes had Dredd on sale. So I rewatched Dredd.

In case anyone was wondering, Dredd is still really good. And the fact that they never got to make another one is more proof that life is unjust.

Yeah I'd probably agree with that, I started nodding off in the last half hour. But that might also have something to do with the drinking beforehand and late hour I saw it at.

I’ve been thinking about the David Bowie thing. I don’t know if I can ever reconcile the things that I’m feeling. I know there’s a part of me who wants to forgive him or make excuses because of what he meant to me and the other good things he did. So I don’t think I can ever trust myself there.

Because of that I’ve been thinking about other famous man who have been accused or been in a bad situation and were acquitted one way or another. Men who mean a lot to me. Pete Townsend and Connor are burst this perso Townsend and Connor Oburst Specifically. Townsend appears to have been cleared and what h pacifically. Townsen appears to have been cleared and what he did doesn’t really make sense for a child pornographer anyway but he’s also a rich white man. How can I ever know for sure? Corner was accused of rape and the girl did recant. False accusations do happen but he’s also a rich white dude who is beloved why certain people that could’ve made this girl‘s life a living hell.

I don’t know what I’m saying with all of this it’s just been killing me and I wanted to write something. I wish I could know for sure. I wish I didn’t worry the townsend to die someday and all of this shit is going to come out.

I think it's something we all have to grapple with. The ability to make amazing art, or music, or [anything else], doesn't confer a greater morality, everyone probably knows this intellectually, but we want people who have touched us emotionally to be good people. I think that's where a lot of the innate defensiveness comes from - how can someone create something of great, resonant truth to me personally be a shithead? It makes you feel tainted by association.

I don't have answers. For me there's two things that I need to do to achieve some kind of equilibrium. The first is to divorce the art from the artist - to be ok with the idea that someone can do something terrible and something wonderful and both of those things are true, and do not cancel out. That bit's important. You don't need to forgive someone to appreciate the impact they had in other areas, nor does the fact they created something great mitigate any damage they caused. The second is to consider whether their actions are such that I cannot in good conscience give them or their estate any kind of financial support. That's more of a personal line, I guess.

Random anecdote which always cheers me up: there's a kind of companion book to Life of Brian which is mostly a collection of old script drafts, film stills, diary entries from the Python team, and ranting letters from John Cleese to the censorship bureau. A lot of the diaries describe the filming as a pretty debauched, drug-fueled bacchanalia type of experience (and Cleese and Gilliam at the least haven't exactly covered themselves in glory in recent years), so reading it you're kind of bracing yourself to learn some less than savoury things. Anyway I remember reading one entry which mentions "Michael [Palin] is at the pool ..." and I'm thinking oh dear. Oh no. Ok I don't want to hear about what Michael Palin got up to with the unconscious actresses or whatever. I need to believe Michael Palin is, fundamentally, a decent person. But, nervously, I read on -
"Michael [Palin] is at the pool, dangling his feet in the water happily and ignoring everything going on around him."

The musician that has always got me through the most is Ben Folds and I don't know how I'd handle it if I found out some terrible shit about him.

    Watched The Outlaw King

It was solid, not incredible or must-watch but fun enough and a well made medieval drama.

Pine's accent was all over the place but he did a good job, as did Florence Pugh. The best, part however, was Aaron Taylor Johnson who played The Black Douglas and chewed his way through every scene with reckless abandon. Dude was clearly having a blast playing this wild berserker and he was fun as hell.

    And, because it is required:

Pine's dick was respectable. Not a Willem Dafoe but he was getting out of a cold on location river and does well for himself.

We watched Bees Make Honey tonight too

    What a weird ass movie

I liked it a lot! But man it is a unique animal

If I had to describe it, it would be...a period murder mystery with the flow and pace of an Oscar Wilde play or 30s Screwball comedy, the editing stylistic DNA of your late 90s Tarantinos and Ritchies and a completely unashamedly anachronistic soundtrack.

I have a feeling it is gonna be a love or hate it movie, with very little middle ground.

Also it's kind of a family affair? Alice Eve stars, her brother Jack Eve directs and Trevor Eve, their dad, plays a major supporting role.

overlord has very little of what the trailer promises. if you go into it expecting weird science monsters, prepare to be disappointed! there is maybe seven minutes of them total in the movie, and they don't really do anything.

it's mostly just a boring ass war movie you've already seen a thousand times with cardboard characters that thinks being loud is the same thing as being entertaining

i felt downright cheated by the end
