Tiered lists?

Experimenting with the markups, I can only make one "tier" of points (Thing 1, Thing 2) in a list. I'm having difficulty cleanly making lists with multiple "tiers" (Thing 1, Thing 1a, Thing 1b, Thing 2, Thing 2a, Thing 2b). The forums also seem to eat any spaces at the beginning of a line, preventing me from indenting my way to a clean list.

Are there any more options to do what I'm trying to do?

Exactly that! I tried to do something like that once but I was obviously doing it wrong.
