So what's y'alls pick for the next big rule change?

My thought is that unless they really like the free-spell Expertise decks, they're eventually gonna rule that spells with nonexistant mana costs have an undefined CMC rather than zero. The only problem is that it smacks dryad arbor in the crossfire.

I was saying the same thing!

I think Dryad Arbor will be fine; it's already treated like a regular land most of the time, not a spell, so IIRC Expertise spells already can't cast it.

Can't Zenith for X=0 as ramp if Dryad Arbor has CMC = Undefined

    Ah right

...eh, seems fine. Maybe they could unban GSZ.

Arbor was far from the only/main reason Zenith was banned.

Damage on the stack is really bad and the only reason it worked like that in the first place was because of the rule where tapped creatures did no combat damage so you needed to have your clerics able to defend and then use their abilities.

    Early magic was real dumb.

That is not the case. Tapped blockers not dealing combat damage was changed with the 6th Edition rules change when the stack was brought into existence. Your example case never existed in Magic because before 6th edition there was a whole other part of combat called the damage prevention step, which was very fucking weird and applied after damage was dealt but before it was received. The game is much better with it gone.

So there are 272 rare/mythics in a full playset of GRN.

With a wildcard every 6 packs, you effectively need 233 packs to get a playset of all cards.

You get approximately 116 packs from weekly and daily rewards per quarter.

This means that buying 100 packs per set, i.e. spending $100/set, is enough to get you almost every card in Magic.

That's still pricy, but for cqrdboard crack that feels very cheap.

$100 cash for a playset of everything in the set is way cheaper than paper for sure. A 1x full set sold for $135 on eBay a month ago.

A Hearthstone expansion is only 135 cards, vs 250+ for a Magic expansion (GRN had 254 functionally distinct cards). A playset of Hearthstone cards is 2x or 1x (for Legendary cards) vs 4x for Magic.

While they're both digital items and thus could be priced pretty aggressively, it makes sense that the cost would scale up for Magic by the very nature of the game/expansion content.

Edit: I've spent maybe $30 on Arena since it hit open beta and I've got 5 fully built competitive decks (Izzet Phoenix, Golgari Midrange, Selesnya Tokens, mono-U tempo, and mono-G aggro), so you can definitely be competitive for far less than the $100 buy in for a playset.

I do play a fair amount, but basically only to complete quests and knock out all the 100+ gold win rewards. And when I've got free time...

In NEWS there's going to be an official Pauper format Mythic Championship Qualifier (PTQ) at Magic Fest Los Angeles on March 2. Winner gets an invite and flight to Mythic Championship London. They gave the announcement to Tolarian Community College since he's been such a champion for the format:

If you watch the full clip, he immediately scoops and concedes about 5 seconds after that clip ends, like he still totally ninja's a land into play, but the immediate concede makes me wonder if was a mistake?

It was 100% not a mistake and him conceding shortly afterwards should not absolve him. He moved the land to the bottom of the graveyard, and primed the scene by making a point of fiddling with his lands so that straightening them again wouldn't be remarkable.

Oh ya he totally cheated a land, I just watched more clip to see if chat or commentators noticed and was weird to just have it be an immediate concede. Like did he think he would be caught suddenly and try and cover?

I think at the time of the clip he was very behind and was searching for a low-percentage out that only worked if he had the extra land in play. So he set the stage by dropping the land, and then tried for his out, didn't get it, and promptly conceded.

The entry fee for the Pauper MCQ is $50, which while in line with other PTQ entry fees at ChannelFireball events seems crazy because some of the most competitive decks cost less than the entry fee.

The game store I played at until I left Michigan for California had a freezer full of cheap burritos, gas station-quality cheeseburgers, ice cream treats, and other foods and a microwave for a while.

One of the dudes who works at my FLGS's brother owns a food truck and swings by from like 3-7 on tournament Saturdays and apparently makes an absolute murdering and is super glad no other food trucks in town know about it.

ultimately prereleases are a low-key enough environment that i recommend just doing whichever out of the 5 is your favourite. if you want to metagame a bit more i would probably suggest one of the black-based guild boxes because it means that your seeded pack will have a chance of packing black-based removal
