Been playing since Weatherlight, figured I'd finally get around to playing Arena. Boy there sure are a lot of Ajani Pridemate decks running around. Feels like the era of Perilous Myr on Origins all over again.
Anyway, threw together a U/G deck that hyper accelerates into a huge creature as soon as possible and its been getting results.
Mtgtop8.com is a solid site for seeing popular current meta decks.
I prefer MTGGoldfish just because it's not ugly as sin, but Top 8 is better at seeing where the decks were played and how they did, yeah.

I was playing a zombie deck against another zombie deck and was down 20 to 1 after just barely saving myself with Skullduggery
I managed to wipe his creatures and get a few of my own down, and then he got manascrewed three times in a row and I took the game. All the way from 20 to 1.

Turning creatures sideways is rull good apparently. I started this draft going blue white, then blue white red, and then near the end of pack two was like screw it let's go green. Why did this work.
e: upon further reflection on how basically every card in this did work in every game, I guess it might actually be... good? The ability to constantly apply pressure, with some cards that also work late game and the lordly bomb Spineback, was just too much for a lot of decks to handle. The Conquistadors were surprisingly effective at this; one in the opening hand guaranteed several turns of dropping 2/2s on their face if there was nothing better to do. And all their removal became worthless. Go ahead, Luminous Bond that Conquistador, I ain't playing anything better for another two turns. Oh, another one? Big deal, I got bears coming out my ass, son.

Dinosaurs is quite strong, however...
R/G with forerunner is quite strong, has good early and mid game, and can support some bombs. I think when this is open it's one of the best decks there is.
White really only has rares and suncrested pterodon. I have done ok with W/G but found the early game rather tough, and without red, you can't turn on the enrage stuff.
W/R on the other hand I think misses out on way too much with green, and if you think W/R dinosaurs is open and you're not seeing green, you probably just made a mistake and it's not actually open.
Overall dinos are great in general because there are so many board stalls or 2/3's around and you can often just attack into them. You just still need an ok curve, removal, etc to make it work.

Those lifegain decks seemed popular in thew lower ranks then they vanish
Booted Arena up again for a couple of games. In anticipation for the next set, I guess. My Green deck still does what I want it to do (ramp into big creatures) and my Boros deck either stomps the opponent in a few rounds or bricks entirely.
Anyways, I see there's an unranked mode now as well? If that's the place where people play their fun jank decks without being too concerned about beating the meta or wherever, I guess that's where I'll spend most of my time.
Shalai plus a bunch of make target creature indestructible cards is hilarious against Thousand Year Storm decks. I think she took like 40 damage total.

Went black with the mill enchantment, on attack things, red utility and blue counters, and got rolled.
Third game could have won, but didn't get the last land/treasure I needed to drop the black dino with prey counters to board wipe.

White weenie aggro. Hunted Witness, Adanto Vanguard, a few of the convoke loxodon, Pride of Conquerers, Snub..horn?nose? that 0/3 that gets +3/0 with ascend. The 2/1 flyer with ascend. @milski and the internet recommended running Squire's Devotion, that enchant that adds +1/+1, lifelink, and makes a 1/1 token and that's been working shockingly well. Oh and Legion's Landing is paramount
If golgari starts showing up more heavily I have two of those Tocatli things to slot in. It has been fun, but it's definitely a grind. Just have to win more than I lose! It took me 3 hours to go from the bottom of rank 4 to the bottom of rank 1.
I gotta say the rank rewards seem very thrifty compared to what you can earn in a weekend of Constructed Event. So to my thinking it's somewhat unusual that CE isn't ranked.

That's probably solely because BO1 drafting is more expensive.
I wouldn't be surprised if the constructed events eventually went away entirely and were only replaced by the ranked system. They aren't adding ranks to BO1 draft, it already has it?
Also I still dispute the EV is lower drafting. You get cards you want, you get to play the actual game, you win packs and gems to continue drafting, etc. Buying packs means you're done. Drafting means you get packs and might get to go again if you're decent. Especially since dupes turn into gems now
Hmmm, ICRs got nerfed fairly hard. The 33% chance for rares to become mythics did seem a bit too much. Now it is 12.5% and uncommons go to rares at 5%. Also no rare at 4 wins. For less than 4 wins you are rarely going to see a rare card. Before you'd likely see one even at 3 wins and possibly even mythics.
The real question will be if the EV is better than packs at a 45-50% winrate. If not then it will kill the format. I suspect though that the changes are not severe enough to do that and it still beneficial to play at 50% win rate.
I've been averaging 12 mythics a week from rewards, this will probably lower it to 5 assuming there isn't an exodus from the format.
i would phantom draft to raise limited rank, i guess, if they made that a ladder to climb.
normal drafting is too pricey for me to play enough games to change that a lot.
but uh tbh right now i want my limited rank to be really low,
so that i can fight people who are bad at magic and win great prizes.
while it matches based on rank, why would you ever want a high rank?
money is way better than prestige.

Yup they're separate rankings! Your constructed and limited rank are different.
Limited seems a bit pricier to get up high though.
There is. You use gold to play in settings where gems are the reward and then you spend those gems on gem only stuff.
