paid the deposit over the phone to the mechanic on Tuesday, and today they are "30% done" with the work that was estimated at 3-4 days, because they had to order a special tool. which would be more irritating, but the TCM that was supposed to come in today (give or take a day) was marked as delivered on Monday, and is obviously nowhere to be found. i suspect it is USPS fucking me over, because i had a similar thing happen in December with a holiday gift that never arrived, and we've never had an issue with package thieves before this.
so much for lucking into nice weather this weekend for carwork!
This will be long and I'm not confident in my ability to explain it.
I need to get my windshield replaced, and I called some windshield places and they're quoting me like 1200$ for a Honda Civic, which seemed excessive?
I checked a quote on a website, and the first time I entered it, I got a quote back of 600$, which seemed reasonable, and I wondered why I was getting quotes for 1200, but I went back and realized one of the questions I answered No to was "does your car have automatic windshield wipers (it doesn't) or headlights at night (it does)", I clicked yes on that because it does, and suddenly the price is 1200$, which confused me because to me it shouldn't matter? The light sensor is on a module connected to the car, it's just glued onto the screen, then I noticed that for the 1200$ quote they're including a replacement of the light sensing module, but I can't figure out why?
Can that module really not be disconnected from the windshield?
I also feel like the automatic windshield wipers sensor would be something very distinct from an automatic headlight sensor as well, and I can't figure out why they're both in the same question.

That module CAN be removed from the unserviceable windscreen and refitted to the new windscreen. Unfortunately many automotive glass places do not like to do so because there is always the chance that said control unit will choose that exact moment to shit the bed, and then the windscreen fitter will be out of pocket for the cost of supplying and fitting a replacement unit.
As for the automatic headlight unit vs. the automatic wiper unit, most manufacturers have combined them into one by this point. Wipers used to have moisture sensors on the arms, and the rear view mirror mount had a light sensor module built into it, but it turns out you can use a different sensor combined in the same unit with the light sensor to operate the rain-sensing wipers, and it's cheaper and more reliable than having the separate moisture sensor on the wiper arms.

This is the kind of thing that is plaguing modern cars. A windshield should be cheap but with the new sensors that attach, and need calibrated, it can get expensive fast. Subuarus with the EyeSight system can run easily into a couple thousand depending on the vehicle, between the windshield, proper installation with the sensors and recalibration of the sensors it takes time and a special facility with the space.
We're rapidly approaching a time when people won't be able to maintain "cheap" used cars. Hopefully most of the sensors will be defeatable.

Our Golf is a 2008 Mk5 and a replacement windscreen is over $800.
Shit isn't just ridiculous, it's fucking offensive.
Found an '07 Legacy Outback with the 5 speed manual yesterday at the top end of my budget. Fresh gaskets, timing belt, and water pump from the dealer, and super clean frame and paint. Interior is in pretty good shape too.
Subaru's engineers have admirable consistency, because this car feels uncannily like the '84 in how it drives and makes power except that it's better in almost every way.
Why have power steering? Because it's more convenient. Why have power windows? Because it's more convenient.
No matter what level of tech you want in your car, there's some high horse person who questions why you would want your preferred level of convenience.

Yea I've heard radar assisted cruise control and automatic braking is super awesome from a convenience and safety factor, the problem is it makes your bumper go from a $500 part *unpainted) to a $4000 part (unpainted) if you get into a fender bender.

Sorry, this came across as way more personal than I intended.
There's a 'Race Wars' event about 4 hours south of me in a few weeks, and I'm tempted to go along.
There will be a lot of very nice cars new and old. But mostly I want to go to see the race between an AU Ford Falcon (I'm trying to think of an equivalent US car, but it's basically a butt ugly joke that was the local rival to the Holden Commodore) that the organisers are entering ("The UnSafety Car"), and an old Camry ("Grannypants") that WTFAuto, a local tuning workshop who I dealt with while I had my Celica, are entering .
The banter so far has been entertaining, with plenty of bad photoshop videos going back and forth - unfortunately it's only on facebook, not youtube, and I can't seem to find a decent way to link it.
Has anyone gone and test driven a Genesis G70 manual here? I figure in a few years that might be a new-used car option for me if I can get over the front.
So we get stiff once in a while. So we have a little fun. What’s wrong with that? This is a free country, isn’t it? I can take my panda any place I want to. And if I wanna buy it a drink, that’s my business.

I'm puzzled as why you'd need automatic wipers or lights and shit in the first place, personally.
They're often not optional anymore.
This was what I was trying to bitch about.

So the windshield wiper motor on my Jeep died.
It died a slow, painful death. First it started making a sound when it was running. A sound like an old old man reaching for a newspaper he'd dropped on the ground. Then it stopped working altogether. At that time I ordered a replacement motor because I live in Vancouver where it rains all the time so I need working wipers.
Then a few days later I must have bumped the stalk while getting out of the car because the next time I turned the engine on the wipers sprang to life like a junkie after an adrenaline injection. So I had working wipers again but they were making an even worse sound somehow and also they were running at half their intended speed.
So yesterday I finally went to pickup the new wiper motor and spent an hour or so installing it only to find that the new motor has been put together wrong and it's indexed so that the wipers try to do a weird backflip through the engine bay when you turn them on. So I uninstalled it and fished the old sad dying motor out of the dumpster and reinstalled that.
Hopefully the seller will send me a replacement new motor cause this old one is probably going to haunt me forever if I make it work too much longer.
I'm out in western Sydney at the moment and I had an afternoon to blow today, as well as a rental Suzuki Swift in the carpark. I had booked a manual Holden Spark (not sure what that's a rebadged version of) but instead I have a Swift with a CVT. I didn't realise it was a CVT for a while, but the first drive was pretty much straight onto the motorway so it just got on with it. Gotta say, it's a decent little nugget. It has nice buckety seats that are certainly more bolstered than the corner capabilities of the car, I guess it's light enough that the CVT doesn't get all elasticy, and there's a button on the gear shifter that means it holds the revs at about 2500-3000 when you're not on the throttle which is great for bombing about the Blue Mountains, which is what I did this arvo. It's super basic inside, but it's a nice peppy little thing to drive. There was one switchback road I went down, then up, then back down, and outside of some of the uphill sections needing rather a lot of revs, it acquitted itself admirably.
In short, if you need a little shopping cart and they're available in your home market, they're definitely worth a look at.

It hasn't been Matt Farah's million mile Lexus for quite a while now though, it's changed hands a couple of times iirc.

Yeah apparently they're pretty sporty little bits of kit, a decent improvement on the older Swift Sport model. Supposedly there's a 'Sport' model of the new Swift on the way too, which should pep things up even further.

It's nice that he drove it personally into 7 digits.
Luxury car owners get called assholes a lot but they are far from the worst drivers on the road. I'd much rather have to deal with a guy in a BMW that won't let me merge ahead of him or some shit than a pack of bros in extremely loud Infiniti G-coupes or Mustangs or whatever racing each other on busy freeways. It's a far too common sight on the roads out here in LA anyway.

Going to check out a used 2012 Mazda 5 tomorrow.
When our son outgrew his infant car seat and the new one didn't quite fit into the Jeep it made me sit and think about how the Jeep is actually a really bad family car after all. Like a 2-door with a toddler is nonsense. And the only thing approaching off-roading we do is a private dirt road up the side of a mountain to my wife's family cabin - a road that could and has been done in our old VW Golf with non existent rear suspension.
So anyway, a Mazda 5 is the convenience of a minivan without actually being a minivan so it looks decent and is fun to drive and reportedly super reliable. I hope the one we see tomorrow is good because it's a private sale and a great deal.

No, that's the NOT the "Mater from the Cars movies" special edition.
Why does it look like it’s doing its best impression of a Bentley?
People have done correction edits to make it more reasonable and it looks soooo much better and like an actual car when fixed.
