I remember my brothers old Veloster, must of been a 2015 or something around there. He disconnected the speaker system at one point and realized that some of the "engine noise" was fake lol

BIL had one and put in an aftermarket stereo, had all kinds of issues with it stemming from the stupid engine noise shit.

I've always hated 'fake' sounds for cars, and I include the big open ends on mufflers people put on Civics and what not.
I approve of loud (To a certain extent) exhausts that are actual performance exhaust. I put a Borla catback exhaust on my Q60 and while it's louder than I wanted at low RPM, it's pretty amazing at high RPM and is much better than the stock exhaust (Mine is a 2018 before they put the new exhaust on the Q60).
Having fake ICE sounds for an electric car seems like parody to me. It's so stupid. People complain about how 'quiet' they are, but most cars and SUVs are quiet, and aside from muscle/sports cars and trucks, most of the sound people hear is tire/road noise anyway, which is still there for an EV.

I'm waiting for electric cars to be as customizable as PCs and phones. Every car rolling past with a DMX ringtone or cartoon soundboard. Mine will sound like either the Jetson's (or for you youngsters, Harkonnen's flight chair from Dune remastered) or Scooby Doo's "running in place but not accelerating yet" sound.

There are already IC cars that have simulated exhaust noise, I'm pretty sure
Although I think for the most part those deliver said noise through the interior speakers
Most major auto manufacturers have vehicles that play fake engine noises inside the car. Though not always from internal speakers. One of my favorites is a system VW uses. They connect a metal rod to the engine on one end and a diaphragm attached to the car body, on the other end. The engine vibration is transmitted to the diaphragm and used to regulate the sound with the engine RPM.
Does anyone in here have any familiarity with shipping a vehicle? I'm looking at buying a vehicle off Ebay right now and would need it shipped to me. I've heard mixed reviews on that process, with some shippers being basically mob fronts

I'd call your insurance adjustor and ask them who they use. And I would also definitely insure the vehicle before shipping it.

Interesting, I hadn't considered asking my agent, wouldn't have considered shipping vehicles a thing they had to do often.
Depending on your insurance, they might not, as they might use an intermediary for that kind of thing, so you might get an "I don't know." I wish I had a specific recommendation for you. I think we used AmeriFreight when I worked at Agero, and they were reliable but extremely slow. Sometimes 10-14 day lead times before a delivery could be scheduled, because they wanted critical mass on that shipment before setting off. That meant pretty deep discounts, which was all Agero cared about.
Based on what that link says, I'd probably go with Sherpa, as you do not want to deal with a company that won't guarantee a cost of service in advance on top of having a cancellation fee.

i do have some experience with this...
some shipping companies are just front-office veneers for a network of independent owner/operators, others are full service companies that actually own their vehicles and employ their drivers
if you can find the second one, you want the second one, and depending on the price its probably worth it
in the independent model, as far as I can tell, you are actually doing business with the owner/operator, and *their* insurance, which are conveniently all 1-truck operations which will just fold if anything ever goes bad. so even though the fancy website takes your money and prints the receipt on their letter head, your car is actually in the clutches of Jimbob McTrucker and his own personal business ethics
i had a recent near miss with this phenomenon which I will hopefully be writing about tonight or tomorrow!

I want my car to rotate between the Howie scream and the Wilhelm scream.

Based on Webguy's comments, I dug deeper on the Dart and Wwwwhhhheeeeww, you weren't kidding. There's probably some gems out there, but I'm not willing to roll the dice on my essential transportation.
So now it's between the '17 Cruze hatch or, possibly, a '16 Mini Countryman. Hoping to finalize this before next week. (I would like to retract my earlier statement that I enjoyed this part--it's stressful and expensive. Why didn't you warn me!? )

Avoid the Mini as well. They are rebadged BMW inside a smaller engine bay. So expect expensive parts and higher service fees.

I always wished 2 things about the dart, it was reliable, and that they had made a hatchback. It had the lines to be an amazing hatchback.
Go with the Cruze. Odds are it'll be the most reliable and it will be certainly far cheaper to repair and maintain.

as a former mini owner, i can attest to this. you do NOT want to buy a used mini without a warranty. you absolutely do not.
i had one new under warranty and that warranty pretty much paid for itself. i had total brake failure in under 15k miles, lmfao.
also the engine is great in terms of performance, but it was designed by an actual clown
loved that car, loved it, but absolutely never without a warranty, and trade that fucker the day the warranty expires
I love the Mini because they have great character and they’re a ton of fun. But as others have mentioned they have a lot of headaches, my sister’s Mini Cooper had a persistent issue with the valve timing system that took a lot of time and work to resolve.
There is a method to BMW’s madness, but it’s one I’m often at odds with.
Hopefully the electric minis will eliminate most of the problem areas, though I'm sure they'll find more ways to go wrong.

Thanks for all the feedback. The mini is out of the running anyway--either I misread the listing (possible?) or they updated/corrected it, because it has twice as many miles as I had thought. I'm planning to look at the Cruze (and anything comparable on the lot) later today. I appreciate all the responses.
As someone who's never owned one but always coveted one, you are all absolutely breaking my heart with this Mini knowledge, I need you to know.
they're badass you just have to treat them the way most people treat BMWs... which is to lease them, drive the shit out of it, then hand it back and never look back
i had mine for barely 4 years, loved it, loved the engine, loved the manual, loved the handling, it was very practical despite its size, the interior is really well done, its stylish... i'd get complimented all the time on it
BUT
all my weather stripping was coming apart
the brake master cylinder failed outright at around 10k miles and i had a completely slack brake pedal (lucky I found out in my own driveway!)
the auto start/stop feature simply ceased to function after my first oil change, never to work again
i had to adjust my rearview mirror every day because the weird ball joint adhesive thing they used for that would just melt in the heat
they require premium fuel
although I personally did not have engine problems, some variants of that engine are famously wretched
i'd do it again in a heartbeat, and I'd sell it again in a heartbeat lol

*eyes 200,000 mile BMW nervously*
They’re tons of fun, but you have to go in eyes open to the fact that you’re going to pay a lot more in maintenance. If you’re good with a wrench or you can stomach the repair bills, power to you, there’s a lot to love about them.
BMWs are not unserviceable, but every repair requires a very methodical process. You will need special tools and you will need access to a good repair manual. In retrospect I would probably not buy my 328i again, but now that I’ve ironed out most of the bugs it’s a very fun car to drive.
yeah a buddy of mine bought a used BMW SUV crossover type thing, it had ~100k miles when he got it and it seemed like he was doing another repair on it every month
he's also a tinkerer and had room to do his own maintenance so more power to him, but man some of the issues he had (and the timing of them) would have made me drive it into the ocean
As someone who's never owned one but always coveted one, you are all absolutely breaking my heart with this Mini knowledge, I need you to know.
The biggest thing is: is there a mechanic in your area that will service them. Otherwise you'll be doing your own maintenance--which is fine, but when I tell you that changing the oil is the Biggest Royal Pain in Anyone's Actual Ass, I mean that wholeheartedly--and taking a road trip to do things like replace the thermostat housing because somebody thinks a plastic one in a turbo engine is smart and also while your at it, just thread those 5 wiring harnesses right through it, too. And then get ready to do that part again in a few years.
Yes, I still have mine and I do still love it. Just know what you're getting yourself into. Or wait for the EV.
Edit: hard agree on the premium fuel. Do not try to feed it anything else. It will hand you so much attitude.
Owned a mini for 3 years under warranty and it was a joy. We lucked out and didnt have any serious issues, but still dumped it when the warranty ran out.
I barely fit, know all the horrors of the engine / etc but still dream of one as a winter beater. Sure it will be horribly expensive to maintain, but twice a year I will lots of fun hucking it around a snowy corner.
Really should just look for a well sorted Honda fit as it has everything but the self inflicted pain.
i bid on this car on BaT about 7 weeks ago and lost in a 2 person bidding contest. about 10 days after the auction BaT called me and said the winner backed out of the deal and forfeited his auction fee (which was over a thousand dollars)
they said they could put me in contact with the seller for non-binding negotiations and I wouldn't be charged any fees
seller accepted my high bid, car get
the seller had recently purchased another car from BaT also and had used BaT shipping successfully to get his, so I took his advice and went with them
to make a very very very long story short, it did not go well. the seller had to sit through two hauler no-shows eventually culminating in his wife having to meet the hauler while he was out of town on a trip, the pickup finally took place nearly 3 weeks after the bank wire had taken place
after it was finally picked up, the hauler placed the keys to this car in a bag, left the bag on the back of the transport trailer, and drove off. the original keys are now sitting somewhere on the side of the interstate in utah, never to be seen again
the hauler had to deliver the car to my nearest porsche dealer (which is nearly 2 hours away from my home), where I had to meet them in person to take delivery of my keyless automobile... with a bonus of being covered in the oil leak of a truck they were hauling above it. (thankfully not on the soft top, so it cleaned up alright, but goddamn).
several weeks later, keys finally delivered, hauler pays the invoices, i finally have it in my garage
throughout this ridiculously convoluted process, BaT shipping was... lets just say, less than good in their handling of the situation. i concede i was likely extremely unlucky, but they didn't do anything to make this go smoothly.
they did refund me 20% of the shipping fees which modestly contains my rant, but uhh... i will be unlikely to use BaT shipping against, especially for anything of major value... which, dont get me wrong, this is a nice car, but it is still pretty much the cheapest porsche you can buy
61.5k miles, 10+ years of fully documented maintenance history, all major maintenance done, IMS, RMS, fresh plugs, nearly brand new OEM brake replacement, brand new cloth top, all electronics still functioning, etc, etc. a very quality example. just minor wear and tear common to a car that actually got used and loved
i wanted something that reminded me of my RX-8 but with better power, and boy howdy... this thing moves and sounds fantastic
Based on Webguy's comments, I dug deeper on the Dart and Wwwwhhhheeeeww, you weren't kidding. There's probably some gems out there, but I'm not willing to roll the dice on my essential transportation.

I bought a brand new Dart in 2012, 1.4L turbo/6-speed double clutch.
2 weeks into ownership I had to take it in for a recall because a batch of bad clutch parts was intermittently leaving me unable to move from a stop. It was in the shop for about a month while the parts slowly made their way over from Italy.
About a month after getting it back one of the sun visors snapped at the hinge, that got replaced under warranty.
After that I drove it ~35,000 miles a year for 4 years and my only problem was an intermittent CEL that came on whenever the temperature dropped below about 45F but didn't seem to affect performance.
Still don't think I'd recommend one to someone, but it seems to be typical FCA hit or miss quality.
ok so this is an idle question that has popped into my head... and i could not easily google an answer
the 986 has side intake ports... specifically the drivers side air duct, as far as I can tell... goes to the engine, via an air filter...
what is to stop someone from just pouring a gallon of water in this easily accessible hole? surely they thought of this? or do i have to be extra careful when washing my car

From pictures, there's a cup around the bottom half of the snorkel opening that would prevent it from sucking up water pooling in that area and it doesn't appear the snorkel is actually sealed to the bodywork so any excess water would just drain out the back.
Your airbox air path is also not straight. It's baffled specifically to make debris and water fall out of the air stream. And there's a water drain in the bottom of the airbox to get rid of any water that does make it in.
If water ingestion were any real issue you wouldn't be able to drive the car in the rain.
Just remember that half the people you meet are below average intelligence.
