Anyone else watch the pilot episode of The Passage yet?
I really enjoyed it. It's a departure from the books in many ways but that's to be expected. The girl that plays Amy is really good and Mark-Paul was a good choice for the role.
I'm thinking this show will do the book justice and that makes me happy

Applegate also has a trans daughter who she's outspokenly supportive of while Rowling's a TERF so fuck off, wizard lady, shapeshifting four-eyed centaur lady is our new god.
So, you don't like the way our little fictional war came out? You don't like Rachel dead and Tobias shattered and Jake guilt-ridden? You don't like that one war simply led to another? Fine. Pretty soon you'll all be of voting age, and of draft age. So when someone proposes a war, remember that even the most necessary wars, even the rare wars where the lines of good and evil are clear and clean, end with a lot of people dead, a lot of people crippled, and a lot of orphans, widows and grieving parents.

it is extremely weird that a book series about shape-shifting adolescents understands war better than all of Hollywood

I still like Harry Potter but I find it really difficult to participate in any of the fandom anymore
in other news I just watched the last episode of King of the Hill
I get that the letter is funny, but as a kid who was reading those as they came out, I find it pretty shitty/condescending to the intended middle school audience. Looking back as an adult, it's pretty shitty to write a series that revolves around a silly kid focused alien war and then the end is "actually, you all suck because you thought this was a fun sci-fi series, fuck you. Also, I stopped writing these books around number 24 (of 52) and swooped in to write this melancholy ending"
I find it pretty lame, actually. It's a terrible way to address children, and isn't, as she says "respectful". It's disdainful, actually.
I get where she's coming from, and if it was a story for adults I'd 100% agree
But imagine if like, Steven Universe ends with half the cast dying and Rebecca sugar says "suck it up its a war story"
like... YEAH, it is, but there are certain expectations from a child audience and they're not being assholes for being upset
Steven Universe is a great example, or Adventure Time (which did have a sort of melancholy ending, but was in general much happier and more satisfying)

Animorphs is extremely dark in tone throughout. The ending isn't out of left field at all.

It deals with mind control worm aliens and in like, book 6 it's revealed that one of the main characters' mom is not only mind controlled and alive, but she's the leader of the alien army.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
Animorphs is a sci fi war story from the first book

Hell, one of the books has Jake watching his enemy slowly die inside his brain because they have no other option.
Another has them trap a boy in the body of a mouse because he was too dangerous to let go free.
It's dark as fuck.

whoever did the casting for young hitchcock and scully is some kind of genius. Or the young Scully actor is just that good - the facial expressions at the end managed to bridge 40 years and 80kg.
I dont think that letter came off as mad at the children but I can see why others feel that way. It comes off “if you didnt enjoy the ending than you are feeling the correct emotions because war is awful and sad. Please remember what my books taught you when you grow up and are involved in making decisions about real war”.
I love that the ending to Animorphs isn't clean, because the story isn't clean. An ongoing story beat is that the characters are constantly struggling between doing the most moral thing and doing the most efficient thing. Cassie especially is concerned with what the war is doing to her and her friends; it's not a coincidence that her compassion and morality are what leads to the end of the war, and it's no coincidence that she's the character that thrives after.
I dunno, I'm generally down on stories that are grim and sad for the sake of it. And I don't think Animorphs is one of those series, and reaching the end was probably a real formative experience for me.

it's such a nice love letter to the fans
The weird thing about King Of The Hill is there are two series finales, because they thought the show was ending, but then it got brought back for another season
So there's the finale where Luanne and Lucky get married (which is why every single supporting character shows up for their wedding, even Junichiro Hill), and the ACTUAL finale, where Bobby learns he loves grilling, which is comparatively a very small episode
But it works out for the best, because, while Luanne's wedding is very sweet, and would've been a perfectly good finale, having the final episode be focused just on Bobby and Hank, with the series ending on the two of them sharing just this tiny piece of common ground at long last, is just the right call
A season long conflict with the library with more limited magic and oh my God seriously cast-wide memory wipes is absolutely not where I wanted the series to go. And the concept of why the Monster at the End of the World is dangerous is just bad, full stop.
It's too bad because I thought besides the very end S3 was the best one, but I also only watch the show after it's on Netflix so SYFY doesn't really care what I think

I like that letter a lot. It's a powerful defense of art-as-moral-stance.
I've previously gone to the mat for the Mockingjay, because I dig that kind of, "PTSD is a real thing, and horrific stories don't get easy happy endings" vibe. It was an unpopular opinion!

I feel like as we move further and further away from release, and the hype of "this is the conclusion to a wildly popular YA franchise," Mockingjay is going to get a much better rep. Because it's not out of line with what happens in the first two, and it never really forgets what everything costs.
But I'm the guy whose favorite part of the last Harry Potter book is when they're endlessly wandering through the countryside, so I might not be the best judge
