The second season really soured me on SAO forever.
Are we talking about the Alfheim arc? I’ve got confusing answers as to what is the first season. If so, then same; it was an episode there that took me out of it forever.
the idea that full dive VR games managed to take off in the SAO world despite the very first one being a mass hostage-taking deathtrap terrorism incident that killed thousands and left the rest of the victims comatose in hospitals on life support for years stretches my suspension of disbelief just a little bit
I prefer to think of SAO Abridged as the better, canon version. It actually has some tricks up its sleeve compared to the pratfalls of the original
Completely 100% agree. The work the Something Witty guys did with the scripts rewriting core concepts of SAO does such a better job of fleshing out the universe while simultaneously skewering it for laughs had me sign up as a patron for them after the first couple of episodes. Sadly it's such a huge amount of work with each episode so you're waiting multiple months for the new one to come out, it's easy to get frustrated waiting for the next tone to come out. They're finally getting to the Alfheim arc with the latest episode and so far I can't wait to see how they lampoon the whole thing.
I think dot hack definitely inspired SAO but SAO was the point when it turned into a major genre
It was definitely a thriving genre in Japan but never made the jump to the West until SAO
I think that's because the first dot hack thing that people saw was SIGN, which was fairly dense and didn't have much action compared to other Toonami/Adult Swim stuff. The PS2 games were a bit niche too. SAO is kind of the opposite.

Death Note as a series definitely thinks Kira is a absolute monster. Unfortunately some fans didn't get the memo.
Spoilers for death note:
Hell, Light thinks Kira is a monster. It's really telling when he loses all memories of the Death Note and basically is a completely different person from the rest of the series.

SIGN is pretty much a mood and character piece about a bunch of messed up people in a messed up situation. Pretty much everything that came after has a fairly different feel to it and really doesn't address why anyone aware of the situation would ever touch anything related to The World ever again.
Isekai has been a thing since people started writing fanfics.

One reason why isekais became really popular is that it is a lot easier to write them than to write natural exposition for characters that should already know this shit.

Doesn’t stop some shows, like Black Clover.
Asta you absolute dunce, how do you not know a single thing about tbr kingdom you’re planning to rule or the order of knights that it’s been your dream to join for years? Or the concept of a double date?

My anime background would have begun and ended with Battle of the Planets (Science Ninja Team Gatchaman,) Starblazers (Space Battleship Yamato,) and Robotech (3 different series).
But my oldest daughter loves it so I've seen Soul Eater, most of Cowboy Bebop, My Hero Academia and maybe something else.
I watched the first season or two of Attack on Titan, but hearing that its fascist has turned me off to it. And I've watched the first season of One Punch Man.
Oh...I must be really far behind. Is it like...fascism is a good thing? That sucks.
I also feel like MHA had a little of that, Japan is a pretty strict society it seems from an outsider and having character break the rules to save a life and then their friend is like "Hey look it sucks that you keep breaking the rules and your going to get punished for it so you have to promise me that no matter how many lives you could save you won't ever break the rules again" and they do. Thats lame! They made the coolest most frog character lame!
Attack on Titan spoilers, explaining the metaphor:
You see, humanity in Attack on Titan was forced by the evil Titans to live within these forced walls, having to abandon the wider world that was rightfully theirs.
The metaphor is that "humanity" represents Japan, and the Titans are America, et al, who forced them out of the wider world and imposed upon them the inability to expand, that is, use military force on other countries.
The Scout Corp is essentially a stand-in for Japan's Self-Defense Force, so when there's a storyline where the Scout Corp stages a coup to reinstate "the rightful monarchy" and lead an offensive to reclaim the territory that is rightfully theirs... yeah I hope you can see how this message is problematic.
That's not even getting into how the Titans are depicted as Basically Jews in flashbacks, complete with armband designations.
Oh yikes, yeah I never got that far. Where I was it was basically just people fighting giant monsters that eat people....thats uh super disheartening because that series had a pretty cool start.
I'm still not sure about the whole
"The people within the walls are actually Japan" symbology given like
there's like
an actual Not-Japan country post-timeskip.
Also, it's not just the Titans who are framed as a Jewish people analog; everyone on the island is a member of what is essentially an analog for the diaspora.
Also the people who have been dropping Titans (who are political prisoners of said people, condemned to be turned into Titans) on the island [which is... also basically Madagascar] are pretty much Nazis. Like full on Nazi.
....the fuck?
okay so, AoT spoilers:
Backstory is, there used to be a Kingdom or something of Eldia, which held the power of the Titans. Some say they used the Titans to conquer lands, some say its bullshit (the guy telling the story figures it's probably somewhere in between). Used to be there was a great Queen who had the power of all the shifter titans, but on her death she split it into the seven we are familiar with now, and that continued on for a long long time.
Anyhow, this nation known as Marley rises up, and goes to war with Eldia, supposedly with other nations backing it up. Despite the power of the titans, somehow, Marley gains the upper hand and the then-king of Eldia takes a large chunk of his people across the sea to an island off the coast of the continent, proclaiming they will live there in peace. The King uses the memory altering powers of the Founding Titan, still in the hands of the Royal family, to erase the memories of all the Eldians who came with him, uses titans to form the walls, and this is how the Eldians came to believe they were the sole survivors of humanity, trapped within the walls.
Meanwhile, Marley gets its Nazi on and throws the Eldians who didn't follow/escape with the king into ghettos, beats them down and generally tells them they're literal devils hated by the world.
But, for some reason, only Eldians can transform into Titans. So they begin a program for "Honorary Marleyans," to bring them into Marley's military. If you join, your family gets somewhat better living conditions and so on. Marley was able to also keep hold of some of the shifters during the war, and so if you're an Eldian in the Honorary program, there's a chance you'll be picked to become the successor for that Titan power.
With those in place, Marley goes "Fuck it, lebensraum!" and starts wars with other world powers, using the Eldians under their control as weapons, not only the shifters but even just injecting Eldians with Titan serum to transform them and drop behind enemy lines.
This goes on for about a hundred years, until the events of the manga kick in
one of the countries that the main character's are allying themselves with is basically Japan, who really is only there to secure mineral rights on the island.
Also Marley is pressing for an invasion of the island because their rivals are now at World War II-level technology for warfare and turns out that Titans don't do very well against airplanes with machine guns. Also the island has oil they can use to help their own industrialization as the shift away from "inject these Eldians we've beaten down with Titan serum and thrown at the enemy for a hundred years"

Holy fuck that is such a complete wackadoodle-going into-the-weeds backstory compared to how the world is initially presented in the first season of the anime. Thanks for summing that up for me. I tried to get into the 2nd season but just didn't like the level of violence that kept escalating so I dropped it.
I know this is basically just regular Franky but AU Franky is great.
I also love Brook having a soundcloud.
they are all SO GOOD
I just watched it on super slo and fuckin' EVERYONE is in it
I was amused that Brook is a shut-in who’s figuratively weak to sunlight, to contrast with him being literally weak to sunlight.
it's interesting that they've not only made the characters younger for a HS AU, but they've also streamlined characterizations. which I mean, makes sense, how Brook gonna be a famous dropout, that's not interesting
I'm partly through the fishman island stuff in One Piece
These fishmen are gross looking

I assume he’s reading the manga because I don’t think it’s physically possible to watch that many episodes in that amount of time

yeah but how do you feel about giant mermaid princess
Hmm, fish on top or fish on bottom?
yes
pro-mermaid then
I suspect by saying Fishman Island, you mean Arlong Park (ie, the East Blue thing with Nami), given you were just starting out, right?
There's another Fishman Island arc with an actual place called Fishman Island like....500 (?)_more chapters in.
I often forget that with how long running One Piece is, that there's probably been multiples of everything
