Because it's not a hentai game? It's a visual novel with minor hentai elements, and even those were removed from the latest release.

Now excuse me while I go drown my sorrows over feeling the need to defend this series.

Hey, so my roommate is looking for an anime to start watching and I figured this thread would be useful for that sort of thing. I offered him some classic suggestions but I'll ask y'all:

Via Funimation, what do you think are the quintessential anime's from the 70's/80's/90's.

I specify those decades as we're watching Dragon Ball, which he really loves, but I don't believe he's a big fan of anything relatively modern/contemporary.

    Cowboy Bebop
    Macross Frontier
    Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood

    Brotherhood is the late aughts.

I'd probably go with something like

    Lupin III
Robotech or Gundam (Wing, G-Gundam, or Original flavor)
    and Cowboy Bebop

You could always throw in the toonami mainstays like Sailor Moon or Big O as well.

Didn't realize there was a time constraint, in that case I would go with Gundam 8th MS, Macross Plus, VOTOMs for Mecha, Bebop stays, and Ninja Blade.

To be honest, the explicit scenes of the original version of the Fate/Stay Night visual novel are terrible and also tiny forgettable footnotes. The way the later versions and the anime adaptations excise the lame intercourse scenes in favor of kissing and platonically lying on a bed together overnight is kind of hilarious though.

It certainly wouldn't be unique in starting out with a pornographic aspect and then ditching that later. Happens with a lot of stuff, east and west.

And then there's works which have no explicit or even suggestive content whatsoever, but have a legion of exceptionally horny fans. But that's a different phenomenon altogether. Not one to really get into here.

You'd lose a lot from not knowing the characters, I think. Most of the appeal comes from seeing these people who are normally forced to fight to the death, either due to magic or melodrama or both, instead just kind of hang out in a low key setting.

Edit: It's basically like someone animated a coffee shop AU fic.

Just a heads up about 08th MS Team, if you're watching it subtitled the very first line has an anti-gay slur in it, which is a... really unfortunate choice of translation. There's no further occurrences of that kind of shit but it's not the best foot forward.

the f/sn games aren't hentai games

they're about as close to hentai games as Mass Effect is to porn games

which is to say there's still some weird sexy stuff but not very much and only at a few points in the game

  • LeumasWhiteLeumasWhite New ZealandRegistered User regular
I mean there is actual porn in there. It's just like, weirdly disconnected from the rest of the stories. Definitely more than what Mass Effect gets up to, but also less relevant to any other part of the game than ME's romances.

I tried watching some of the Legend of The Galactic Heroes remake yesterday

It is disappoint less gay than the original when it comes to Reinhart and Kircheis. There's very little staring into each other's eyes, or Reinhart idly playing with Kircheis' red locks.

Really my biggest issue though is that while it's certainly prettier and the space battles do look a lot cooler and dynamic and futuristic... The character designs feel very bland and just don't have significant amounts of their own identity compared to other shows in recent years.

I've had a few friends ask what Fate is and basically explained it as a battle royale of mages that are gifted a historical/mythological figure to aid them.

It's incredibly cool conceptually and not hard to see why it became popular.

Although I also had one of those same friends ask me if Dune is Game of Thrones in space, which kind of fits I guess, but it's a depressing way to reduce Dune in scope.

    Is anyone still reading Ippo?

    Recent manga spoilers
Anyone think Ippo is out for good and the series continues with the support cast with him perhaps transitioning into a role as a coach or was his punch drunkeness misdiagnosed and he'll be back later on.
Ippo would have so much catching up to do after being out of the game for so long, not only to where he was at before retirement but to where his peers who have crossed the line are now at. Plus, his last fight was already framed as a comeback, it would be weird narratively to do that again.

Imo whether he's actually punch drunk or not I think he's out of it for good, he'll just be a viewpoint character
That's pretty much how I feel about it. The series has done such a great job with building up it's characters that I'd be happy seeing how things work out with them rather than Ippo.

I feel like Takamura's story is not going to end well if his retina really becomes detached. There has been way too many hints about it for something not to happen.

If y'all are looking for something to watch that's good for pretty much anybody but also isn't like, shonen manga adaptations or slice-of-life comedy, let me recommend Denno Coil.

It's a show that feels like what if Studio Ghibli did a show about augmented reality? Here's the opening:

Is Denno Coil available in the states? I've wanted to watch it for years.

Ippo's learned something from the recent Mashiba match that will be another factor to push him back into boxing again. But even if it's a matter of 'when' and not 'if', I feel it will be a pretty long wait until he resolves his non-"monster" status. Besides, the perfected Dempsey was left hanging as a plot point.

I'm enjoying the chance this has given the other boxers, though, Mashiba especially. Volg's the world champ in their weight bracket, and their future match is gonna be awesome.

My anime background would have begun and ended with Battle of the Planets (Science Ninja Team Gatchaman,) Starblazers (Space Battleship Yamato,) and Robotech (3 different series).

But my oldest daughter loves it so I've seen Soul Eater, most of Cowboy Bebop, My Hero Academia and maybe something else.

I watched the first season or two of Attack on Titan, but hearing that its fascist has turned me off to it. And I've watched the first season of One Punch Man.

Oh...I must be really far behind. Is it like...fascism is a good thing? That sucks.

I also feel like MHA had a little of that, Japan is a pretty strict society it seems from an outsider and having character break the rules to save a life and then their friend is like "Hey look it sucks that you keep breaking the rules and your going to get punished for it so you have to promise me that no matter how many lives you could save you won't ever break the rules again" and they do. Thats lame! They made the coolest most frog character lame!

Attack on Titan spoilers, explaining the metaphor:
You see, humanity in Attack on Titan was forced by the evil Titans to live within these forced walls, having to abandon the wider world that was rightfully theirs.

The metaphor is that "humanity" represents Japan, and the Titans are America, et al, who forced them out of the wider world and imposed upon them the inability to expand, that is, use military force on other countries.

The Scout Corp is essentially a stand-in for Japan's Self-Defense Force, so when there's a storyline where the Scout Corp stages a coup to reinstate "the rightful monarchy" and lead an offensive to reclaim the territory that is rightfully theirs... yeah I hope you can see how this message is problematic.

That's not even getting into how the Titans are depicted as Basically Jews in flashbacks, complete with armband designations.

Oh yikes, yeah I never got that far. Where I was it was basically just people fighting giant monsters that eat people....thats uh super disheartening because that series had a pretty cool start.

I'm still not sure about the whole
"The people within the walls are actually Japan" symbology given like

    there's like

    an actual Not-Japan country post-timeskip.

Also, it's not just the Titans who are framed as a Jewish people analog; everyone on the island is a member of what is essentially an analog for the diaspora.

Also the people who have been dropping Titans (who are political prisoners of said people, condemned to be turned into Titans) on the island [which is... also basically Madagascar] are pretty much Nazis. Like full on Nazi.
