Watched Thor in my MCU rewatch.
It’s definitely one of, if not the weakest MCU film.
On Earth, Natalie Portman is utterly wasted, Eric Selvigs role, as much as I like Stellan Skarsgard, seems pointless and Jane Foster could have just done his stuff. Kat Dennings is the absolute highlight and I’m glad she’d coming back for WandaVision.
On Asgard, man it’s a mixed bag. The Warriors three and Sif are under-utilised and underdeveloped and Tom Hiddleston has a hard time finding his feet as Loki. Hemsworth is great when he’s allowed to have fun with the role.
Thor on Earth is just way too short. Everyone from Asgard acts as if he’s been gone for ages and Thor even acts as if he’s gone through this huge personal change but he’s on Earth for two days, and all he did was fall for an Earthling, eat a few stacks of pancakes, get drunk with Selvig and fail to pick up the hammer before sacrificing himself. I get that that was the point, but seriously two days.
But there’s some great comedy in there, like the whole breakfast scene and Thor asking for a horse in the pet store. Waititi must have realised those were the better bits because he channeled that in Ragnorok.

Best line in the movie is still the one from the Make a Wish kid.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
Hemsworth really does seem to enjoy playing the role, so I’m all for more Thor and he has great charisma and comedic timing as well as some good dramatic moments.
Shame his first two movies and roles in Avengers 1 and 2 was wasted compared to the potential we now know is there.

When I recently rewatched the first Avengers film, I definitely missed the funnier Thor that only pops up very rarely. My impression was also that Whedon tried - and failed - to give Thor a bit of the mock-epic diction, the vocal equivalent of the font they use for Thor in the comics. I'm glad they gave up on that, because it doesn't really work. Hemsworth's performance really comes to life in Ragnarok where he's much funnier than he's previously been, but where he also makes the more poignant bits work, which they then used to fantastic effect in Infinity War. (For me it works less well in Endgame, but eh, different strokes and all that.)

Cool thing about the MCU is it kind of works too. Because as Thor spends more time "off world" the more he loosens up and comes into his own as a person and character.
Thor- or rather the way the movie treats him til the end- is easily the worst part of Endgame.
What makes how they treat Endgame Thor so awful is how realistic Thor is, at least for me.
Personal shit, but I was diagnosed with classic combat related PTSD and related chronic depression. Part of my depression was heavy drinking that lead to weight gain as well as avoidance of reminders. I’ve since received help.
But it’s because I think Thor’s portrayal of someone with depression is so realistic to me that the constant stream of cheap jokes is much worse. Especially from Rhodes whom above all the others, even Steve, should know better.
That said, it was heartwarming whenever Thor started to break down or try something a bit reckless, Tony and Steve tried to offer gentle support instead of cheap jabs.

Thor loses his world repeatedly. Every solo film.
Thor 1 he is extremely close with his brother until he stabs him in the back and, for all intents and purposes, dies.
Thor 2 he loses his mother, and his brother again.
Thor 3 he loses his father, his home, his friends and most of his people.
Infinity War he loses his brother again, right in front of his eyes, agonisingly slowly. Then half of what’s left of his people.
Why are people shocked that he’s portrayed as a broken man suffering extreme depression and PTSD in Endgame? If any character was going to be portrayed that way, it’s Thor.
Especially after fucking up and going for revenge against Thanos rather than just going for the head to end the threat, being the only person in a position to end it and with the power to do so. After everything he went through, he lost half of the universe as well.
Just because you realize you're a god of Thunder and not one of hammers doesn't mean it's not helpful to have a hammer nonetheless. Especially one that can fly around and stuff.
"The sausage of Green Earth explodes with flavor like the cannon of culinary delight."
Shit, I found an old hammer in my basement this morning and carried it around for a bit. I didn’t use it, need it, or even originally go down to the basement in order to get it.
I just noticed a sudden absence of a hammer in my life and decided to fill it for a bit.
I’m not even kidding, I made a stupid joke to my wife about it and everything!

I really like how they didn't have a training montage with Thor in Endgame. That would have ruined alot of his character development imo.

Who's shocked? I think you're reading a hell of a lot into what people have said. My problem with Thor in Endgame isn't that he's suffering from PTSD, it's that to me it came across as being played much more for laughs. Infinity War's Thor was already traumatised, but I loved how that film managed to bring out the comedy without losing the underlying edge. In Endgame, Thor had the darkness in the early scenes, but Fat Thor - and Hemsworth's performance - was funny but to me it felt like a cartoon more than anything else. I saw the intention, but I only felt it very rarely.

No, but scuttlebutt is that they were planning on doing it for Thor and Hemsworth put his foot down on that.
You can't erase the sort of trauma Thor's gone through with a training montage, it lessens everything.
but imagine a training montage
and at the end
...he's still fat and everything, just maybe a little more confident because he's had some time to swing the ol hammer around a bit again.
