I'm not sure what the DNC have done here that's the problem. The IDP seem to be mostly fucking this up all on their own.

I think where the DNC is at fault is they are the ones who insisted the IDP use this app for reporting results, instead of the original plan of having them all called in.

    It’s both.

IDP wants to use phones, DNC says no, use an app.
    IDP contracts app to Shadow.
Sometime before deployment DNC says don’t use the app, IDP sticks with app.

Except again the DNC said don't use the ap and the Iowa party said they were going to do it anyway. Like we've heard this both ways and I'm beginning to wonder if today is even thursday.

Both phones and the app were compromised, so they were kind of fucked no matter what.

Honestly if Bernie crushes NH and Pete gets a little bump at Biden’s expense, the way this is playing out is really good for Bernie

I think there’s a highly plausible scenario where he becomes presumptive nominee before much longer

    Edit:
    Pete will fade out soon
    Bloomberg will be on ballots
    Biden might punch a millennial

Huh? The state party was the one that picked the app.

    https://www.npr.org/2020/01/14/795906732/despite-election-security-fears-iowa-caucuses-will-use-new-smartphone-app
Unlike many states in which local and state officials oversee the presidential primary election, in Iowa the state party is responsible for administering, staffing and funding the caucuses, relying primarily on trained but unpaid volunteers.
Cybersecurity experts interviewed by NPR said that the party's decision to withhold the technical details of its app doesn't do much to protect the system — and instead makes it hard to have complete confidence in it.

The Iowa Democrats' plan is for caucus leaders to compile the results from participants and submit them to the central party via their smartphone apps. In the past, the leaders might have called in the results over the phone.
Last year, under pressure from the Democratic National Committee to increase accessibility at its famously arcane caucuses, the state party proposed a plan to allow Iowans to caucus remotely.

Internet and phone-based voting systems are considered notoriously insecure however, and the national party said there wasn't a system available secure enough to support such an idea.

    So that plan was scrapped.

Iowa isn't worth this much attention. It's a couple delegates. Everyone would be better served by moving past it instead of letting it live on forever.

The only value in Iowa is the narrative. Which has basically been changed to a bunch of clowns banging on calculators.

Dump the results in the trash and just write off those 41 delegates. They have never mattered less.

Sounds like I was marginally incorrect, in that there's reporting that the DNC said to use an app, so the IDP found a company to make one, and then the DNC said to scrap that idea but the IDP went ahead with it anyway. Basically just sounds like a total failure of both the national and state apparatus. I still mostly blame the IDP for having caucuses in the first place, though.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/03/us/politics/iowa-caucus-app.html

"And the party decided to use the app only after another proposal for reporting votes — which entailed having caucus participants call in their votes over the phone — was abandoned, on the advice of Democratic National Committee officials, according to David Jefferson, a board member of Verified Voting, a nonpartisan election integrity organization."

Using a new app without rigorous testing is one level of incompetence. It is my understanding that the folks on the ground did not know what to do when the app shit the bed. Not having a solid backup procedure in place if the app failed is a whole other level of fail.

The one major positive out of all of this is that maybe, just maybe this is the end of Iowa going first.

I fear they'll just give them another shot in 2024, but I hope they don't.

The IDP had their chance, they fucked it up, they fucked it up so bad that they have incurred some real risk for the Dem Nominee, no matter who it is, to lose momentum going into the general. Fuck'em. They're done. This shit's too important.

Im actually OK with Warren's name not being tied into any of this mess at all.

Let her go out, do her campaigning, talk to the people, and stay away from the fray of it all.

Bernie and Pete's campaigns, and even Bidens to an extent, are having to devote personpower and resources to this giant clusterfuck, both in contacting the DNC and IDP and the press requests and probably even internal campaign meetings and memos and conflagrations.

Meanwhile, all that energy and time that is being spent, all those people that are doing that, Warren has those same people and energy focused on NH and SC and elsewhere.

So, I'm ok with her not getting any press. Not all attention is good attention.
