utena started putting in giant blinking arrows in the episodes because they understand that i'm an anime fan and thus an honest to goodness moron and need all the help i can get
i still don't get it
i can't believe they followed up a great episode with not just a clip episode, but a nanami comedy clip episode. this show really feeling like 26 great episodes spread over 39 episodes

it is weird to me that dona, dona became well-known enough in japan that it shows up in both utena episode 16 and also gits: sac episode 16 (but only in the sub, in the english dub they have the tachikomas singing akai kutsu instead, which seems like it'd be even less likely to be recognized by english speaking audiences)
this has been dominating my thoughts. please send help

So somewhat sad news: the World Trigger mangaka's health has declined to the point that they have to publish their next chapter as a rough draft.
I wouldn't be surprised if they have to go back on hiatus. At least they were able to wrap up the current arc nicely.

Well its made by the sailor moon guy and that show was 40 episodes stretched into 200 so he got better at least

In Ayamatsu (Pride Route), we follow evil Subaru as he slowly transforms into the Sin Archbishop of Pride after failing to meet
Reinhard
in Episode 2. Elsa kills Subaru almost
100
times, causing him to go
insane and eventually join the Witch Cult
. This story is NOT canon. Think of it as a realistic spinoff where Subaru just happened to make all the wrong choices.
This What-IF story contains Arc 5 web novel spoilers (only relating to the character Regulus) around halfway through the video, but I will give a warning beforehand, so anime-onlies can safely watch this video up until that point. In this video summary I tried to keep Season 2 spoilers minimal, so I neglected to mention certain details that pertain to Season 2, while still trying to keep the summary accurate and interesting.
Some minor details were cut for various reasons (S2 anime spoilers, keeping the video short, etc), so those who have already read this IF story already may notice some things missing.
VOTOMs is so good its scary.
It has probably my favorite version of a boring, invincible hero and makes the whole thing beyond badass and horribly sad at the same time.
Chirico, either through a fluke of evolution or sheer willpower, has evolved into a human water bear who cannot die under any circumstance. This is a major plot point and millions of lives are purposely killed to test this theory. If he is put into an impossible situation in which death is absolutely certainly, he will warp reality/use luck as a super power to survive.
Those gameplay super robot wars videos of Chirico fighting the anti-Spiral? It's not a joke, he could actually do that according to how his character's power is presented.
So back over the weekend a friend found out that the Reddit jury choice for AOTY was Hugtto Precure and had the expected weeb WTF reaction. So I threw down the gauntlet and bet him if he finishes the series by Friday night and didn't like it I would buy him a 6-pack of beer. 2 days to go and he just dropped a case of Guinness on my front door and drove off.
Hugtto is definitely up there on my AOTY list as well. It's pretty standard magical girl stuff, but it's one of the most solid executions in years. If you've got any interest in the genre I absolutely recommend it as a nice starting point for the series.
It is around 50 episodes though, which makes things a bit of a slog. Runs into a lot of the standard long-running show issues, filler episodes, crossovers with other seasons, etc. It's got a great sincerity to it though, and the animation is better than the standard quality for the franchise since it's a 15th anniversary series.
I recommend Heartcatch very highly. It's the only one I completely finished, and it's a lot of people's favorite. The art style is completely different, and also amazing.
The fact that Bulma is the equivalent to Tripitaka will never not be funny to me.
i find it funny how quickly Oolong is jettisoned from the story, never to be relevant again.
At least Sandy (Yamcha) stays relevant for a bit, but yeah Oolong/Pigsy just kind of stops mattering after the first arc of Dragon Ball huh. I guess he needed to exist because Journey to the West, but the moment it stopped just being JttW he just didn't have much of a reason to stick around any longer.

Speaking of the Precure series, anyone have any opinions about the Glitter Force and/or Glitter Force Doki-Doki on Netflix?
My friend's two young daughters loved it, I heard from him, but they're right in the target age group. I watched the dub trailer and it was...a bit painful.
The original actually got an English dub as well, back in the day.

Don't bother with the Netflix versions.
Glitter Force was very monster of the week even by Precure standards. Doki-Doki was quite good and might make my top 5 if I bothered to make the list but Netflix fucking butchered it in the editing room.

I've gotta agree with this, sadly. Glitter Force is created by Saban, the same crew that handle the Super Sentai -> Power Rangers adaptations, and it has a ton of the same issues. If reading subs is an option, going with the original Precure version is better in pretty much every way IMO. Heartcatch and Hugtto are the two seasons fans will generally recommend for newcomers, though the very first season is available on Crunchyroll and is quite solid.

My criteria were 40+ chapters, no anime, character has a fighting style, and the series isn't a shonen battle manga (though Rokudou is debatable in that case). The fact they all turned out to be women was mostly a coincidence. It's not my fault that all of those series have the women be way stronger than the male characters, or in Jahy's case they don't have any male characters at all.
(Outside of a fighting game context, Helena would destroy everyone else here in a fight)
i wasn't expecting that kind of ending from utena, so I guess I was underestimating it even at the end. funimation has the movie apparently so thats the next stop
I read this interpretation of how the movie relates to the show a while ago that I thought was really interesting
the movie is like if after the show's ending, Anthy found a way to rewind time back to when she met Utena, and she manipulates events to give them a happy ending
that's a weird take! utena (show) ending discussion
the show's ending is still a happy ending, even though it perhaps comes across as bittersweet instead of unambiguously happy because its such a realistic ending after the heightened drama of what directly proceeds it!
that's sort of what i was alluding to in my previous post. the ending that you expect would be like, Akio gets impaled by a bunch of swords or otherwise hoisted on his own petard, Utena and Anthy kiss and then ride off into the sunset together, with a brief denouement to show how all the student council members / other major characters have also been changed for the better.
And despite that not happening, you still get the important part - Utena was unable to "revolutionize the world" but she was able to revolutionize those around her, most importantly Anthy, letting Anthy ultimately break free (and in a way that respects Anthy's agency and doesn't just reduce her to a damsel)

Honestly, i liked that, it set the stakes well for how insane these things were.
@Lars Read dungeon meshi, add Senshi to the list. ("Expert monster cook" is a valid fighting style, honest)
