A [Chat] in which multiple Lusitania theories are mused upon

RMS OceanicRMS Oceanic Registered User regular
On Friday 7th of May 1915, at 2:10pm...

lusitania_torpedo_strike_atlantic_german_u_boat_attack_munitions.jpg

RMS Lusitania was struck by a torpedo launched from German Submarine U20. Seconds later, a second more powerful explosion rocked the ship, sealing her fate to sink within 18 minutes and with the loss of nearly 1200 people. While the inquiry at the time concluded U20 fired a second torpedo because propaganda, that's been discounted.

The cause of the second explosion is still officially unknown and dangit it's annoying me. There are three main theories.

- The classic: Lusitania was illegally carrying high explosive munitions for the war effort. German sources at the time liked this one, as it ex-post-facto justified her as a valid war target. There are some dodgy stuff around the manifest declaring her legal carrying of bullets and shrapnel after she left New York and the inquiry having a big secret section that hasn't been uncovered to this day. But the reckoning is the munitions she might have been carrying would have done far more damage, and the ship looked relatively fine above the waterline until she was all under the waterline and slammed into the sea.
- Cold water + Hot boilers = Steam explosion. This feels plausible, especially with the quick loss of steam pressure and electricity (trapping people in her elevators, good luck sleeping tonight) but some discount it because people around the boilers survived.
- Coal dust. Championed by Robert "I found the Titanic" Ballard, empty coal bunkers near the end of a voyage, dust kicked into the air by the torpedo, find a spark, kaboom. But the second explosion took a few seconds and wouldn't the water have smothered the dust?

I keep reading different sources where it was "oh she definitely carried the boom booms" or "no she didn't that's dumb" and British secretiveness makes that possible but then other sources will be about the boilers and nobody agrees on the truth and it's frustrating. Vote me for Prime Minister and I promise to completely declassify everything about Lusitania just for my own peace of mind.

So what do you think? Who's right and who's wrong?

I find capital punishment to be cruel at best masturbatory at worst, I'd rather get shot resisting/fleeing or drown in an escape attempt.

My favorite time getting a raise was getting the raise then being told "I could have given you 25% more, but I don't think anyone here is worth that."

    Gee... thanks?

When I worked doing elevators, the Executive PM gave someone $80,001 a year salary so they were making 1$ more than a couple of the other people, and he was like you are the second highest paid person here I expect more out of you.

Those will periodically go aggro on your base and the spawners just keep pooping them out.

I lost 3 mans to plague, which was bad enough that I've actually reaearched penzocycline or whatever the antibiotic is. But now I've discovered you can only buy neutroamine to make it and can't produce it.

Then I got 2 mans wandering in and one tamed wild man. So I am at the same amount.

Also PSA, the 50% global consiousness reduction for 11 days was surprisingly bad. I was barely keeping up with food production.

My melee person died so I have no one to give this BoE sword I got to.

He went from 70k a year to $80,001, so it wasn't like he just gave him a 1$ a year raise.

But I thought the idea hilariously late stage capitalism.
