Skyrim is worse than most simply because old RPGs often implied tons of sections you couldn't go to in a large city when the city was supposed to be large and not some small village that gets nuked or whatever. It doesn't even have the faceless NPCs that exist just to suggest a bunch of people. Just faceless guards to make the fact there are more guards than people very obvious.

Currently fighting through the Shinra building

I think the biggest thing jumping out at me about FF7 is that it's WAY goofier than its reputation

Like the game just played a joke on me during a huge dramatic moment where I had to literally run up 60 flights of stairs

That's silly in a way I never realized this game was

Also so far it's just kind of making me wish I was playing Arc the Lad 2 instead

    Fuck that game's good
You telling me this game isn't extremely serious?

It really can not be overstated how much the compilation of FF7 stuff, even the ok parts, flanderised every aspect of the original game.

The thing is that FF7 was this goofy at a time when every game was goofy like this

FF7 innovated* by also having grimdark segments, which was fairly novel at the time, so that's what people remember.

    *FF6 did it first

Also, speaking of "allegorical" game design makes me think of things like

in Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories

how are they actually fighting? Where are the cards?

The story makes it extremely clear that the cards actually exist in-universe and that everything in Castle Oblivion works with cards, and you fight by playing cards in real-time which makes Sora swing his keyblade

where are the cards, what is Sora actually physically doing there, how is he playing cards

Yes this, all the follow-up spinoff FF7 stuff they made was trying way too hard to be cool and edgy in a way the original game's script did not.

Oh I like CoM's combat fine. I think it's fun to play once you figure it out.

It just makes no diegetic sense at all.

There really was no point to Sleights, you lose a card for the rest if the fight and don't deal more damage than just playing those three cards separately.

You need the combined card value to reliably break late-game enemies and bosses and prevent yourself from being broken, and Sonic Blade will hitstun enemies for 7 consecutive hits and allows you to easily finish the game.

Also, if you need to reload your deck more than once and losing cards become a problem, you probably need to rebuild your deck. Losing a card per sleight is a non-issue, and you can even get them back with Hi-potions.

When I played CoM on GBA I just had a lot of 8 and 9 Keyblades, some 0s, and like six Cures and had no issues.

Yeah, maybe Re:CoM changed up a lot with it being a much larger 3D arena that you had to use Sleights way more.

On the tiny 3 inch GBA screen, it was very simplistic.
