I'm considering just trying to get through the story and then doing a second game where I do all the challenges and stuff. But I know this game is super long so maybe that's a bad idea.

Tried catching a wild horse for the first time earlier but it just ran away. I tried lassoing it like you would in RDR1 but I kept running out of stamina really quickly. Not really sure what the process is in this game.

There was a very specific control change to breaking wild horses in RDR2 compared to RDR that I can't remember now. I think when you get on the horse, you have to also hold Down, not just adjust your balance?

I remember trying to snare a white Arabian and spending literal hours sneaking up on it, trying to calm it down, lassoing it, getting on it, getting thrown almost immediately because I did it RDR style, rinse and repeat.

I haven't even got to sit on one yet. I get just close enough to try Calm once and then they run, and lassoing just seems impossible because my stamina tanks and I drop it. It's definitely a lot harder than in 1, or I'm just missing something major.

If I remember right, you have to take it slow. If it starts looking nervous, stop and keep calming until it settles down. It can take awhile, but you'll eventually get close enough to mount it.

Okay maybe the one I tried yesterday was just a particularly sketchy horse, I will try again.

I'm still using the starter horse and the one you can buy when you go hunting with Hosea. The one I bought is fast but too jumpy, it is not very reliable in a fight or when wolves are about. The starter horse is trusty but it's smaller than most other people's horses and that makes me feel silly riding with other gang members. I really want a big fast grey horse. The first ever wild horse I broke in RDR1 was a grey and I just always wanted grey ones after that.

I am not too proud to say I just purchased new horses in RDR2, I found the breaking mechanics supremely unfun

I would say the main distinction between odyssey and rdr2 is:

Odyssey has more arcadey quick combat and movement, as well as more “gamey” mechanics like skills and leveling up. It’s very much about putting the player and their power fantasy first, with zippy controls but sacrificing the more immersive animations and movement of rdr2.

Rdr2 lacks the skills and stats rpg stuff of odyssey, and it’s very much an investment you have to make in terms of acclimating to the more animation heavy controls, and slower movement. But if you have the patience it’s rewards are really hard to overstate, and when you get into this game it gives role playing fresh meaning again. It’s insanely immersive, its slower more methodical pace allows the game world to feel far more real and less “gamey”, everything in the game world feels much more naturally connected and threaded together organically

and while odyssey is a gorgeous game, with very bright and colourful scenery, RDR2 is straight up witchcraft from top to bottom. It’s physics, weather, gore and animation systems are leagues ahead of any other game

They are both some of my favourite open world games tho for different reasons. It depends on your mood. Maybe try to simplify it and just ask yourself if you want to be a cowboy or a spartan?

If you want something you can pick up and play for 15 minutes whenever I wouldn't recommend RDR2 because shit is a time investment. Slow pace and scarce checkpoints mean completing a mission can take a chunk of time and freeroaming can take ages to get anywhere. But if you have the time to spend it is one of the best games ever.

    Minor spoiler for Odyssey.
you have to play as the other sibling for a part of one mission.

so I keep coming back to this song, it's stuck in my head

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-Tvw6PniEU

and I have this image of it in my head

in the mid 1970s and an argentinian gaúcho is traveling with a caravan and a herd of cattle towards sao paolo

it's late afternoon and she's passing a makeshift football pitch, with kids smoking cigarettes and kicking the ball around

and it reminds her of her tiny hometown, which is still months away on the caravan's route, but her partner and her child are waiting there for her

at the same time, political upheaval is sweeping the land as the united states starts its proxy war and supporting far right state terrorism, and as our gaucho passes from town to town she can see the country changing and the military taking over villages that she's visited before

and the game isn't really about fighting anybody, it's just about helping people survive, bonding with your fellow travelers, bringing goods to the next town, trading what you can, and finding a route along the next leg of the journey

and that's really what I want to play right now

Hmm well I solved the problem of the fast but nervous horse by somehow losing it. I hitched it at a train station and got on a train as part of a mission, then as I was traveling I saw the horse stamina icon flashing red, and when I got off the train it was no longer on my map and seems to have vanished. So I assume it started chasing the train for some reason and got itself killed. Godspeed stupid horse.

Now my Arthur ain't no lowlife horse thief so after disembarking the train I just started to walk all the way back to camp. Fortunately a guy riding past me made some rude comment about me which allowed me to provoke him into drawing his gun so I could justifiably murder him, and then take his horse. Sadly it's the same breed as my starter horse but at least I could ride it home.

    I love this game.

Been playing about with Before We Leave for a few hours now; haven't left my starting planet yet but this is a great little nonviolent city builder/exploration game.

And the music just is pitch perfect. Wonderfully composed and performed folk music that matches the game's emotional feel perfectly.

Odyssey by a long shot. All RDR2 has going for it is it's pretty, everything else is 11 on the annoying scale

I’ve finished the Handsome Jackpot DLC for BL3. Overall I liked it, the characters in it were fairly tolerable compared to regular BL3.

Weird that it seems to lock a zone to your level when you reach it though. Wish I‘d known that, I wouldn’t have skipped around and done some main story stuff if I had.

I might do the 2nd DLC next and then get back to the main story

Got bombarded with Desperadoes 3 adds on the internet and realized that I never finished the first one, which I've had laying around, playing and restarting, in one form or another over the past ~20 years.

Downside is that I forgot several mechanics (I honestly thought that the characters had a limited amount of bullets for each mission, but you can simply reload. I figured that out in the almost final mission, so instead of the tactics of stealth and knifing opponents one by one without raising any alarm, it then became "select all available party members, tell them to shoot at everybody that is coming through that door. Alarm raised? Well, the people who are alarmed are going to come through that door to check what's going on, so shoot them too. Leaving a handful of very distressed guards that never leave their posts.")

It's an old game, it had several crashes to desktop and occasionally some opponents got alerted.. despite being on the other side of the map and never having even met one of my party. Some missions where you have to save one of your party members, but it's never clear what triggers the enemy to finally decide to just shoot them (I had one mission start and within a minute the enemy decided that it had been time enough)

It has some problematic content, especially the voice acting on the Chinese girl that joins your party.

I replaced my stupid suicidal horse with a war horse. He is an absolute unit. They didn't have a grey one but he is a red roan or something and has fluffy feet and is very handsome. Then like 5 minutes later I found and successfully broke a wild dappled grey thoroughbred. So I am a happy camper now.

Because I'm unimaginative I named them both after animals I knew in SA. The war horse is called Tsavo, which means butcher, and the thoroughbred I named after a cheetah called Kitima, which means 'runs very fast'.

Arthur found a gold bar so did the logical thing and went to the city and wasted it all on fancy clothing. Then he ended up in an outfit that looks as modern as possible. Jeans. rolled up shirt. No hat or spurs. Now I’m RPing him as a time traveler come back to shoot racists.

I’ve done like one story mission at the camp outside valentine.

You should definitely play both of those games, they are both very good games.

I'd say play W3 first because otherwise the horse riding in that will suck in comparison to RDR. But if you played the first RDR then it will suck in comparison to that anyway.

It's still kind of wild that Steam sells old games that just plainly do not work on modern systems and you have to go download a fan patch or edit an ini file to get them to work.

yeah it becomes a problem since if a company or publisher shuts down suddenly, and doesn't manually de-list their games from steam, the games can just remain online for years without valve taking them offline or making them unavailable

there are also a bunch of games that still want to connect to gamespy and games for windows live that never got patched, but are still purchasable on steam, making the games either partially or fully unplayable

I find statements like this a testament to how broad the video game public is, that no matter how well-regarded or spit upon a game is someone will have a different view on it, how we all find joy in different systems and actions in video games. It's what makes those screaming hordes on other message boards that are SO FUCKING CONCERNED with metacritic scores and consensus even sadder, as if the most important thing was that everyone only have the same opinion a game.

Like I think Witcher 3 and all its DLC is one of the best games of the generation, perhaps all time and find Ass Odyssey a boring bland grind that is the serial numbers shaved off, all personality removed version OF Witcher 3 YET I totally understand why someone would feel different and I think it's great that you found your happiness in it, that it worked so well for you and so many others.

I really loved W3, a huge part of that was coming to it so late and realising just how many things from other games started there. Like the whole pivot that Assassin's Creed went on (that I think rules) can have an almost direct line drawn from the release of Witcher 3 to the early work on Origins.

    Dark Messiah: complete
    - purged Xana
    - sealed the demon lord

stealth-walked up behind Arantir and stuck a dagger in his neck. He did not die. Instead, he summoned an undead dragon to attack me.

Leanna did nothing. I suppose she might have healed me if I could take damage without instantly dying.

I just hid on the staircase, popping out to fire an arrow at the undead dragon; each time it vanished, I used a scroll or a charge from the staff of reflection to hit Arantir. Eventually he died.

so I walked up to grab the skull and he stood up and swung at me. Dude needs to, you know, stay dead. Or at least play dead.

Everybody's plan seems to involve a lot of dead bodies. Arantir wants to massacre all of Stonehelm to seal the demon prison permanently. I guess whatever Sareth did is more temporary.

Question for the thread, any recommendations on how to stream play PC games. Wanted to pick up some old games from GOG, but all I've got is a decent laptop, not a gaming rig. I've heard there is a way to basically have a good rig run the game and you stream it, and I've got good internet. Been a while since I had time for some PC gaming so I'm out of touch
