Looking those up was how I went from "I wonder what that plane's doing" to "okay, who's it registered to", to finding out that our gas meters get read, not by someone coming round and writing down the numbers from the meter, or by some walking by with a scanner, or by a car driving by with a scanner -- it's a plane flying overhead.

https://www.westernenergy.org/news-resources/aerial-amr/ has more details -- I guess one advantage of flying overhead is that there's fewer obstacles between the meter and a plane, whereas driving along a road there can be trees, other buildings, parked cars, etc that make the radio signal harder to pick up.
